The level of visible detail in Harmy’s version is noticeably better than the official Disney release. A group of dedicated fans with commercial software consistently produce better results than the largest entertainment company on the damn planet. That’s just sad 🤦♂️
Oh my god disney finally fixed that magenta hue there was in the wide shots. Edit: I never knew the 2004 master that was used for Harmy's Despecialized edition had crushed whites.
It also had crushed blacks. The 2004 master was terrible in many aspects. The master Disney possesses now was based on a real 4K scan of the 1997 special edition. That’s why the colors are restored to their natural origin.
P Ferreira Are you kidding right now? They did NOT get the colors right. Firstly, Harmy had to do an entire re-adjustment to the color grading, using the 2011 Blu-rays as a source, because it was so unnatural. They’re not the same at all. Secondly, it’s not even clear when the new transfer was made. But it’s most likely that it was done in 2012 as part of the then planned 3D conversion, *before* Disney acquired the franchise. Thirdly, the colors in the new transfer match the theatrical version (and therefore Harmy’s Despecialized Edition) much more closely, because the new master uses a 4K scan of the 1997 Special Edition as a base, which doesn’t have the awful blue tint and crushed blacks and whites present in the 2004 DVD and 2011 Blu-ray. How you came to any of the conclusions made in your comment is beyond me.
P Ferreira Besides the things I pointed out already, here’s more stuff absolutely appalling about the 2011 transfer; - Luke’s lightsaber is white in the Millennium Falcon, sometimes even having a green-ish tint. *This is fixed in the new master. It’s blue again.* - Hoth, or rather the snow, is blue. *This was also fixed. It’s white again in the new master.* - Vader’s lightsaber, especially in ESB, is not red anymore, but pink. *Also fixed in the new master.* You know how it is that all of these are not issues anymore? *Because of the new, or rather old, color grading.*
@@robinanwaldt So are you telling me the Star Wars movies are all supposed to have washed out colours? Disney's version has Luke using a white lightsaber here. How is that supposed to be faithful to what it should look like??? As I said the 2011 isn't perfect but at least it has the colours and vibrancy.
The 2019 Special Edition is a vast improvement over the 2004 and 2011 versions (especially with regard to color grading), but it's clear that they went too far with the digital noise reduction this time around. Because of that, I actually think Harmy's Despecialized version captures detail a lot better, despite being in a much lower resolution. Just look closely at the wrinkles on Alec Guinness's face in this video and you can see what I mean.
Yeah, the new 4K remaster looks amazing based on its colour grading, but why does Disney feel the need to apply DNR on older movies? Argh, why did they buy this franchise AND Fox?!
Whenever I see Harmy's Despecialized Edition and how good it looks it makes me hope that we get a restored original cut of the film with the deleted scenes, such as Luke watching the Luke and Biggs at the Tashi Station, C3PO and Luke in the lnadspeeder, Han with humanoid Jabba, etc. The same with Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Does something like this already exist or is being currently worked on? If not it would be awesome if Harmy could make restore the original cuts of each of the films.
You don’t want the original cut of ep. IV. Apparently it was shit, and the movie only turned out good because of a last minute re-edit. You don’t need any of the extra scenes. They’re cool to watch after you’ve seen the movie 1000 times, but they ruined the flow of the movie and weren’t necessary. The theatrical cuts are the definitive editions
@@squidwardstesticles5914 That's the exact reason I would want to watch these versions. I have seen the Original Trilogy 1000's of times so I want to see it in new and refreshing ways. I would most want to see A New Hope with the deleted scenes because of the Luke/Biggs sub plot which was completely cut out of the movie. I always loved the cut scene the two of them shared at the Tashi Station as it packs more of a punch later on when Biggs is killed during the trench run. I would never consider a restored original cut to be 'definitive' but I would personally find it interesting to see each of the movies as they were originally intended to be. It is also important that these scenes are preserved and cleaned up, regardless if they are considered obsolete or non-canon.
Harmy is my favorite he did amazing job with bringing back all pre special edition stuff and with color correction still disney version looks better than 2011 bluray with that awful pink filter but disney version on this clip have white lightsaber instead of blue lol
I wonder why none of these remastered versions have never done a full rework of the cgi and given the saber a proper blue colour? It still looks like the unedited white light with reflection tape on a stick from pre production. It almost looks flat when luke swing it about. Very dated look.
When I watch it on Disney+ the lightsaber is blue throughout the entire film. Not as strongly as in Despecialized, but at least it’s blue again. The reason for it appearing more white in this video must be HDR to SDR conversion.
@@Tazza81 That's exactly what I mean. They made the beams look better during the obiwan/vader fight but this one looks very flat and unsaturated, lackinging all the blue colouring.
That’s weird. When I put in my disc of the 2019 release it doesn’t look nearly this desaturated. The lightsaber blade is actually just as blue as the Despecialized.
I love how intense it gets the vibes and music when Luke asks how did my father die? even though It was not planned til Empire That Darth Vader was Luke's Father it makes perfect sense. And Obi wan says a Jedi Knight named Darth Vader because once Anakin became Darth they were like two halves Anakin was the good Vader was the evil Like Jekyll and Hyde.
Wow, the colors are so much better in the Disney+ versions. Still not perfect, but leagues better than the abysmal mess of the prior versions. I may have to check it out on there to compare it to 4K77
Harmy's did an incredible job and I'm so thankful that we have his version when an official release is an imposible dream, when I watch Star Wars, the Despecialized Edition is my go to, I tolerate the changes of Episode V and VI, but the blu-ray release of the original has so many useless changes at the point where is unwatchable for me
@@barkley8285 I think the first "no" vader says in the throne room before yelling "noooooo" works fine. It's short and sweet... The "noooo" is really bad
Another Adywan Revisited Star Wars Saga joke just like the Attack of the Sand people! XD But yeah, Adywan did better with this scene by making the Lightsaber now its correct color and fixing the jump cuts when Luke switches the Lightsaber on and off! :) Disney+ version color corrected the filter a little but not the Lightsaber which is very unfortunate.. :/
George Hamilton but it’s not right. If it was the original shot, but maybe with say a slow zoom in to give it a bit of life, fine, even with added none-distracting extra details and any ‘strings’ removed, fine, but a totally new shot, no. I want just ONE release exactly shot to shot perfect, but in HD clarity 5.1, with all the iffy effects and rough bits corrected so it feels like how we all remember it when we were tiny kids with big imaginations, shipped out in a nice box with a printed disc that we didn’t have to make ourselves, before my eyesight fails me completely. I’m not buying this if it’s yet another ‘special’ edition with new ‘improved’ shots and anachronistic cgi. They can stick it up their goofy holes.
@@Lumibear. "But it's not right" is one of the most absurd criticisms I've heard about the Special Edition changes. The new shot is objectively a better shot-it establishes more, it's more aesthetically pleasing, it's better composed, it's less awkward-and even though it feels less familiar to you because of your early experience with the first edition of the film, virtually anyone with an unbiased preference would choose the Special Edition shot over the first. This shot doesn't have any anachronistic CGI anyway. However, that's not to say that nostalgic value should be neglected, even though nostalgic value is generally unimportant in judging the quality of a film. You're free to prefer certain versions over others even if it's just because of nostalgia, and an enhanced version of the theatrical edition of the films should be released. However, don't let nostalgia cloud your judgement and lead you to mistake your preferences for fact.
@@pferreira1983 Look at my version. I tried to make this scene better. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SyojqoJQkws.html I make my own project. It will be free to watch on youtube
Aren't both of the lightsabers the enhanced ones, since Despecialized is based on the Blu-ray? Also I remember Vader's and Obiwan's having a distinct look in the original that pretty much only GOUT and maybe 4K77 has.
so in this disney version here we see a white light saber. was this how it was shown in the first theater release? so lukes lightsaber should be white instead in green ?
No. Luke's original lightsaber was Blue, because it was Anakin's old saber. In the originals the blue wasn't as washed out it was just kind of pale. Luke lost his blue lightsaber when Vader cut his hand off in Empire Strikes Back. He built the Green Saber between Empire and Return of the Jedi.
Disney’s color grade looks better, but they hit the DNR a bit hard. Funny though- my 4k disc looks much better than what is shown above.... I assume this is without hdr- which makes a massive difference in the OT.
I love the idiots here who complai about special editions when Harmy's is just another special edition. An amalgamation of their nostalgia and rose tinted lenses because clearly they're recollection of the theatrical release is the only version that ever exist
As someone who owned the original releases on VHS back in the day and the 1997 special editions on VHS currently. The special editions add too much that wasn't needed primarily the CGI additions that kinda take away from the original feel of the practical effects they overlayed. Jabba looked incredible in Practical effects only to be replaced by this horrible low poly looking mutant CGI abomination.
The new 4K Master looks way better. You can tell they added some edge enhancement in that 2011 Blu-ray which Harmy obviously couldn't remove since its baked in.
