Something looked interesting as I was aimlessly tinkering with fractals. These rolling hills started out as just a random fractal landscape (made with some sort of spectral synthesis; so I could simply omit high frequency detail).
Some existing mandelbrot picture was used as a displacement map on top of that. When that picture is fairly densely filled with detail, the overall result appears very much like plant overgrowth, or maybe a jungle canopy.
It is only a lucky coincidence that a few seahorse valleys correlate with craters in the landscape.
