Dissecting the Insomniac Leak | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 361

Right after we went away on our holiday vacation, a major piece of news dropped that rocked the industry in the form of a wide-ranging leak of data from Sony-owned Insomniac Games. Timing stopped us from responding until now, and we're going to do so in great detail today. See, our job on Sacred Symbols isn't to make the news, but rather to report on and react to it. While what befell Insomniac isn't right or good -- and while it certainly isn't legal -- it did, in fact, happen. And our coverage of it shouldn't signal our approval of the situation, anymore than a local newspaper reporter covering a murder. We have to acknowledge reality, and incorporate new knowledge. It's important to note that most of what was in the leak isn't going to be featured in any way on this podcast, and indeed, we don't even know how to interact with the leaked materials directly, nor do we care to learn. Instead, through the likes of Reddit, Imgur, forums, and social media, we collected what we thought was relevant, and left out the rest. The relevant: Insomniac's release schedule, game financials, sales data, PS+ presentations, and other items of acute business interest. The irrelevant: Any details having to do with a game deeper than its mere existence. No plot or character spoilers, no discussions on builds and videos, no artwork analysis, and so on. And it goes without saying that personal details of any kind (which we frankly didn't personally encounter while researching for this podcast to begin with) are complete nonstarters. We hope you find our coverage fair and thoughtful; we'll leave that determination up to you.

Just to note one thing, when Colin was going over the budgets of Miles Morales, Spiderman 2 and 3 around the 29:00 mark, I believe he was misreading them. On the actual slide that he was pulling the data from, I think Colin was accidentally looking at the Revenue instead of the Costs, so for example, Spiderman 2 cost $315 million but has made $390 million so far in revenue. Spiderman 3 is projected to cost $385 million and bring in $555 million in revenue. I believe Colin just misread those rows and switched them around
@themightyant.

That specific chart is almost certainly just sales and costs PROJECTIONS anyway. As numbers don’t match up with other documents that specifically state sales and budgets. It also contains S-M2, S-M3 and Wolverine revenue and costs which they wouldn’t know at that point. Context is important.

As someone who worked in the game sales at the time of last of us and the ps4 were released. I think you guys forget that sony include games bundled in with console, and at that time, you couldnt really buy consoles without a games. They were always in a bundle. I remember customers would buy a bundle and trade the game (physical) in immediately. I wpuld encourage this to make more sales and get them buy what they wanted witht the trade in. Therefore reducing the bundle costs. 😅

This was easily Colins worst episode in a while. Misreading numbers, leaving out key parts of information such as Sony saying their first party games are behind the competition/dated, acting like it’s a big revelation that platform holders want digital game sales vs physical (which is obvious and we’ve know this for years), and his refusal to understand and accept the reality of how the Last of Us 2 was received and that is why the sales had a dramatic drop compared to its predecessor.

i posted this on the patreon, but it's worth noting that the last of us remastered was the defacto ps4 bundle for a time. when i went to get my ps4, i wanted a physical copy of last of us, and ended up having to go to like 4 stores to just find a standard edition that didn't have the digital pack-in title. so i'd imagine a great many of lou(r) sales are for people buying ps4 consoles, and that being the only option. personally i think bundles shouldn't be factored into title sales because a big amount of people buying them are just buying a console and couldnt care less what the pack in title is. especially if that's the only option available in the market.

The more likely and obvious answer is its just not a sequel the wider audience wanted.

That is an interesting way of reading the physical sales data, talking about Sony needing to sell more digital games. I personally am way more happy about how good it is for consumers that physical sales still are important and actually way bigger than we thought. Fiscal resport sales data are skewed by including games that are sold only through digital means.

Last of Us 1 and 2 are like Nevermind and In Utero. It's not exactly surprising one sold better than the other, because one is just more appealing to a larger audience than the other. While we can discuss why the sales numbers are so different, I think that's the core reason. One has a father daughter relationship on its cover, the other has an angry Ellie covered in blood. Which one you prefer is up to you, but the sales numbers aren't about that.
@wolokowoh0
@wolokowoh0 5 месяцев назад
Also Colin said it himself a thousand times. The first game's ending does not demand a sequel. It does the opposite in fact. It's a game about love healing a broken dad's heart as he is firced to care for this kid alone who reminds him of his deceased daughter and he grows to value her. The Last of Us 2 is about hate and does't do it in the Attack on Titan cycles of hate with desire from freedom from the shackles of hate way but instead pulls a Metal Gear Solid 2 on you and makes you play as this new third character and lets just say it is offputting. It is divisive by its nature and as you say not really the same theme at all. Say what you will about the Bioshock sequels so far, their theme is still free will vs fatalism(nature and nurture,) like the first game just a different plotline and expression of those themes. The Last of Part 2 completely flips the the theme of enduring love to hate to the point you can very much like the first and not like the second.

The main difference is just that the LoU was multi-generational, the game of a Generation, one of the few "perfect" games viewed by the Internet, and was neither overhyped nor leaked. We all know the LoU was overall better as it was the original and the general dislike of Part 2 is primarily hated because it exists. The given is that Joel would be dead in Part 2 whether before the game starts or early on in the game based on his age, how much he avoided death in the original, and from all of the trailers shown for Part 2. We know Wolverine was most likely going to die in Logan yet there was little to no hate, which to be honest was the best of the Wolverine trilogy.

When you're approaching 300-400m budgets then your model in general is unsutainable irrespective of gamepass or PS+, unless theres a serious potential upsell from a live service component or just being a sales fucking juggernaught like GTA Red Dead or COD. If you cant garuantee 10m in sales then this will become a bigger gamble with each game TLOU3 could have a budget of 350-400m and theres no garauntee it will sell more than TLOU2. So of course the Horizon experiment failed, insane budget, zero post launch upsell potential, no replay value to keep players coming back, no multiplayer/live service component and launching a full year after launch so any impact on sub growth would be minimal. It told them and Colin everything they wanted to hear.

This is great analysis from the whole crew on the leaks. I will say though, Colin needs to learn to stop analyzing the Xbox/Gamepass ecosystem as if it is a one to one with Playstation/PS Plus. They are so different and he does it everytime. He always takes PS saying they can't do something as confirmation it can't possibly work for Xbox when they don't even make the same types of games. Xbox’s biggest IPs/games are live service already or post-purchase monetized. So the metrics he always says are useless like "player counts" or "hours played" are actually very valuable in that ecosystem. They have the choice to play via Gamepass in which Xbox makes recurring/expected revenue off that user or they purchase the game outright. In either scenario, many of these gamers are fine with microtransactions and purchase them. In that sense Gamepass lowers the barrier to entry, similar to F2P in which those users can be monetized further. The most played games on Gamepass and Xbox are publicly displayed so you can see it consists of many first party games like Starfield, Forza, Halo, Sea of Thieves, and Minecraft. This has been the Xbox game type dating back to early Xbox one and has allowed them to make money on games even with the low barrier of entry. I'd argue Xbox core gamers are more likely to spend on MTX than PS gamers since the player-base has been used to Xbox being a multiplayer/live service provider for years now. Core PS gamers shriek at the thought of live service lol As they keep growing and incurring more subs/known/expected revenue then it lowers the risk to make single player or less broad appeal games like Pentiment or Hellblade 2. Which is why it makes sense they started simultaneously releasing on PC right before launching Gamepass because that lowers the risk even further. This has not been the Sony strategy at all. Sony wants to grow PS Plus so they're now making live service games that will help bring in more revenue/cashflow and give more 1st party reasons to own PS Plus/lower risk. Hence why they eventually started to launch on PC too. If PS finds big success with a live service, they can get a bit more risky and put that live service game in PS Plus premium/extra to increase subs while growing that game's playerbase and increasing engagement/revenue. Sony has to build up a 1st party catalog of live service games that benefit from more players and in-game monetization before they can do day one drops into PS Plus. If they can do that though, we could get a much more wacky variated game output from PS since there'll be less risk.

Colin is the same dude who has said multiple times: "If a studio is expecting to sell 10M copies of a game, that game will never release day one on GP" ignoring the fact, that 95-99% of games released every year are lucky to sell 5M copies in 10+ years, lol. Skyrim got to 85 million as of last count I believe, and while it's unlikely Starfield will be quite that monstrous, it clearly has the sort of potential that Colin was talking about. And yet, day one GP. Colin just can't get out of the traditional revenue model of, "sell more consoles to hopefully be able to sell more games" way of thinking. Which for a Sony centric analyst makes sense, as it's very much their model, or how they aim to make the bulk of their revenue at least, with PS Plus being a bonus.

Collin being obsessed with something like Gamepass and wanting to show it will be this inevitable failure is so bizarre to me. Yeah, Sony tried the same thing with one game. A game that is only single player with no online component. Once you are done with that game, there is no real reason to play it again. Small games, multiplayer games, and games that have a ton of replay value are good for stuff like Gamepass and I think we are going to see more of that from Microsoft. It is perfectly okay to have a game or two not perform as well on Gamepass because you got so many others making bank. The big things fund the small things. I honestly do not see Sony making something like Pentiment right now because it would probably not make them enough money and not sell well enough. But small games like that do extremely well on stuff like Gamepass. Indie and AA games LOVE stuff like Gamepass because it gets people to play their games and gets them noticed. And honestly, at this point, Microsoft has the ability to sustain Gamepass. They now have their own internal studios, Zenimax, Blizzard, and Activision. That is a metric shit ton of studios. They have the ability to sustain Gamepass for many years to come. Sony, on the other hand, just cannot push out games at the same rate. They are more focused on the big, AAA games that take 5-6 years to make and if that keeps working for them, then why bother to change? Not to mention, the XBox and Sony ecosystems are entirely different. What works for Sony might now work for Microsoft and vise versa.

To be honest Rift Apart was a launch game in 2019 and 2020 existed, which all of the consoles supplies as in Switch/PS5/Xbox Series weren't really staple until last year. Ok, on the "digital" argument i must say, well gaming is REALLY not what it was that is the hard truth, and there are 2 factors in this situation, 1) gaming is way bigger now and than it was in the amount of people spending and 2) Steam already showed what could happen when your pool is bigger sort of speaking, i mean, videogame consoles were sold as toys at the start and competed with other electronic toys, and the catch was that they could keep on selling you stuff cause the games were separate and in cartridges, that model works if your business is small, but not only technology the pool of customers is way bigger, so there are changes in the way games are made, the type of games, the business models and so on, traditional gaming nowadays could exist only as a niche but NEVER as mainstream, also there is not ONE mainstream nowadays, there are several different mainstreams, i also think the ps2 days were far better than now but it is what it is, gaming these days is another beast completly, this bubble might brust though, but till it last, things will keep on being this way i guess

I'm kinda with Dustin on comparing PS+ to gamepass, it's 100% an apples to oranges comparison. Both services are wildly different and will likely see wildly different results. Sony's test with Horizon was flawed because they launched the game on PS+ a year after launch. Anyone who was that interested in playing would've already bought and played the game, so it being added to PS+ is cool, but not a value added for those people. Ofc after one flawed experiment Sony is going to be like "this isn't possible" because they clearly don't want to compete in the subscriptions business. As I mentioned before, both services are completely different. Xbox games, for example, launch on PC day one so they're able to make back a large amount of their investment there. Steam recently released numbers for Starfield and it made like 230M in revenue in 2023, which likely covers most of the game's costs. Xbox also drops their first party games day one on gamepass, which is going to push way more people to subscribe (and stay subscribed) than dropping a single game on the service one year later. Xbox has also recently been testing early access pre-orders, like with Starfield, and it was extremely successful. They've found a way to have their cake and eat it too. PlayStation on the other hand has to rely solely on PS sales, and I'd bet that they could easily make the numbers work if their games also dropped on PC day one, but I don't think they really want to do that.

And that number was from a projection slide from 2020, the game outperform that expectation selling over 2,7 million and it has been on PS+ Extra for a while.

@@isturbo1984 No, you see, the pandemic makes game sales go down when it suits us best... Like with TLOU2, it isn't because people hated the direction they took the story in, it was because people were at home, off work, watching Netflix and feeling "bad"......

Colin, literally said what I said and predicted. We can care less about what the game looks like at pre-alpha or with missing assets because these games aren't ready. They're not the true version of the game. Sure they're leaked but it does not prove anything of its value or work because it's not a complete product

At around 50 minutes, Colin says A Crack in Time is the best Ratchet or is regarded as such but he's wrong because of his familiarity with the era he was in the gaming industry bubble and not. While A Crack in Time is way better than Tools of Destruction, you have to consider Tools of Destruction was incredibly disappointing. The weapons were off, the platforming wasn't there, and it was very setpiece driven rather than open like previous games. It was the first unanimous low point. The best Ratchet games are the first three/four with Deadlocked on PS2. The first one was heavily marketed as it was a new IP. They spent very little on Going Commando's marketing by comparison. And the third one was them correcting that underspend on marketing. Tha explains the sales and that's what actually happened. Deadlocked was a departure and heavily multiplayer focused but certainly had the most refined combat. But the best regarded Ratchet is the second game, the worst seller of those initial three Going Commando. Up Your Arsenal was when they started introducing multiplayer and this led to a lot of cut content and mechanics. Things are noticeably missing. Going Commando had some of the best weapons, the most variety in mechanics, the longest game of the series, and the most interesting plot and level design. It refined and added so many things and while not everything was the best ever, the variety keeps the game fresh without feeling like padding. Up Your Arsenal is very streamlined and like Deadlocked after refined the combat but it lacked in the other areas. Level design being the biggest thing. Some of the best weapons in Up Your Arsenal aside from the Rift Inducer were introduced in Going Commando so it lacks originality. With all that said, it added multiplayer nd was still better in some regards than Going Commando and people loved the comedy and story. In regards to A Crack in Time, it suffered for the same reasons as Resistance 3. The game before and the marketing. Because Resistance 2 was disappointing to the people who loved Fall of Man, they dropped off the hype train for 3 entirely and bad marketing did not help like Up Your Arsenal's stellar marketing. What you see with Resistance 2 is the people returning from Fall of Man and good marketing on their part. The actual product was not as great as Fall of Man especially on the multiplayer side of things so people lost interest. But even something like getting rid of the weapon wheel from the first game and the killing off of Nathan Hale in the second made people lose interst in the third's campaign. In A Crack in Time's case, it followed Tools of Destruction and suffered from poor marketing despite being better than Tools of Destruction, it sold worse. The game before Tools of Destruction was Deadlocked which as said had the best combat but lacked in other areas. Tools of Destruction had heavy marketing and also looked like a return to form, but it had the worst combat of the games to that point and not as good platforming. Tools of Destruction was very noticeble a downgrade. Deadlocked for its fault was the best at one thing, Up Your Arsenal for its faults had the funniest story and better combat feel than the second, the second was just flat out better than the first mechanically, and the first holds up today on everything except camera control. And as final point, a Resistance 4 would work if they simply acknowledged why they failed to begin with. The second game was a downgrade where they changed everything. It was their Tools of Destruction moment repeating right and then crappy marketing on the game that followed. Ratchet and Clank PS4 had a marketing push because there was a movie in theaters. As for sales staying relatively stable. Consider the PS3 Ratchet's are worse games than the PS2 ones and that Rift Apart is basically PS3 era Ratchet in regards to how it plays. There is no innovation or risk in the mechanics and the story is post Future series where Ratchet lost its identity. The first three games are satirizing consumerism and materialism. They had a message, a charm, and wit. The first two were about corporations and profiteering off shady behavior. Quark was the media criticism. The fourth game was continuing the corporate media critiques introduced in greater degree in the third with Courtney Gears and is actually a better satire than the third game. The third was playing with plot threads in the first game and expanding that. Tools of Destruction changed things to be about timelines and origin of the lombaxes and lacked any satirical value.

Outside of some takes I can understand and also disagree with I'll just say this. Rift Apart has the best game feel and combat in the series, this is while considering the games shortcomings like enemy variety (particularly during the last third of the game) and repetitive mini bosses. If you've seen the concepts of the 2029 game it seems they're genuinely trying to let the game have the most pre-production time possible so they can utilize what they've done with RA to increase scope and content while finally wrapping up the lombax dimension plot.

@@EvernhamNo9 campaign wise R2 is considered the weakest but multiplayer wise it's a different story but yeah it the changes didn't really help people get hyped for R3. Also going back to RaC; outside of his take on tools not being considered a great game in the series it's typical PS2 fan shit about change when most of it is fine. Him saying Rift Apart plays like the PS3 games is absolute bs when it by far has the best traversal, gunplay and encounter design in the series.

Not trying to stoke any flames, but I absolutely saw the leaks for TLOU2 and I'm glad they saved me 60 bucks as I've never bought it. I considered the first game my favorite game for a long time, but it's clear the series is different things to different people, and I think the creator's vision for the series differed greatly from what a lot of fans hoped for, and that's fine. And yea, you can just reduce it to "people not liking something bad that happens in the story" but you can be as reductive on the other side and say some fans wanted more of the characters we knew and not just torture-porn.

Nice to see LSM community pushing back heavily on the countless mistakes and the flawed 'analysis' by Colin in this episode. One big problem with this and nearly EVERY discussion on Sacred is that Dustin and Chris seems to not do any research and not read any data themselves. They 'react' to premise set by Colin. And Colin misreads and misrepresents data SO OFTEN that even though Dustin and Chris are logical and not fanboyish, they can't correct Colin because the premise or the data point set by Colin was wrong to begin with! Still better than Dukes who don't even read data as Xbox/Bethesda's word is taken as gospel.

For most Joel was the main protagonist and he was the last of us. This is why part 2 sold less, if we are all honest he was the draw and the dynamic between him and Ellie. Part 2 was not that for a lot of gamers so they didn't buy it.

On the exclusives topic, i must say, Playstation DID IT ALL people, it didn´t happen in your time but believe me they did all what they core fans wanted several times and it didn´t make them money, for example they had exclusive magazines with free demos and inteviews with developers for 10 years, they brought back ps1 series on psp, ps2 and ps3, nobody bought them, even on ps4 they revived The Last Guardian for the fans, nobody bought it, on the vita too, they ported ps2 classics in hd and nobody bought them, made exclusives versions for the vita and nobody bought them, they made cool stuff like PS VR and VR 2, 3D TVs, the Ps Eye and Ps move on ps2 and ps3, didn´t sell, and now people wonder WHY Jim Ryan was against old games and bring back old franchises, why he was focused only in block busters, welp numbers don´t lie people, that´s the hard truth

You compared one single triple A game with a crazy marketing that wasn’t day one to game pass. Bad experiment. Day one is the most important part. Day one brings all the boys to the yard. Of course it was gonna fail. Here’s a better experiment. One year, day one releases with two triple A first party games.
