Even if you think you’ve heard it all about Disneyland, you’ve probably NEVER heard about this.
In the Distorian's Lounge with Kate this week, we do a deep dive into the history of Disneyland’s abandoned Chinatown concept, exploring how it impacted some of the most iconic attractions in Disney history. Along the way we meet an animatronic you’ve likely never heard of, sit down for a meal in a unique (and sometimes offensive) Chinese restaurant, and learn a little bit of philosophy. We also dig into some history of Los Angeles for context and find an extremely rare never-built Anaheim theme park.

This was fascinating, always something now to learn. I can see that had Disney built this street it would be gone now. It’s nice that Epcot could carry the torch. Thanks and happy new year.

I saw your short on this topic and wanted to know more! Thank goodness you uploaded this. I hadn’t heard about the proposed China town for Disneyland before, maybe there was somewhat of a reason for that, like the lack of cultural sensitivity/ changed level of sensitivity of today’s world. It’s sad but, I think it might’ve gotten made exactly like that if it were proposed again not so long ago (as late as the 80’s, 90’s, and even early 2000’s, I know that there’s a lot of pop culture that didn’t show East and South Asian people in a very positive light, even in my elementary school in Canada in the early 2000’s we would play clapping games and the songs and rhymes were pretty bad, no one stopped us) but maybe not in a Disney park necessarily, but definitely somewhere it could definitely have been built.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, I think it’s for the best that this project never truly came to pass considering how it likely would not have been done in a culturally sensitive way. But some of the ideas for it were interesting (like the projections in the windows). And I could totally see Mushu being a hilarious talking dragon if they wanted to use Disney IP. It’s a tricky line to walk though between entertainment and respect for the culture.
