Thanks for this it was driving me insane. The manual states at tdc it should be perpendicular to the case half's and it just absolutely would not line up!
Forgot to Install shims while building our 2110. This is the best and most informative video out there. We are a precision race engine building company. We don't do a lot of VWs you saved us from splitting case.
Have you ever heard of the distributor shaft gears coming out of mesh, mine did sending the timing all over the place. Don't know if it was the gears being overly worn or my dizzy had a far bit of axial moment with the wear washer between the bottom of the dizzy and drive very thin. Hope that makes sense
Can we put the double washers and spring on the gear before dropping it in? It's almost a ritual with these builders to drop in the two washers, while chanting dont-get-lost dont-fall-off find-your-shelf
You could but, how will you know if the washers made it home? I've seen some people install the gear before the case is together. I don't like doing it that way because you can damage the brass gear while spinning the rotating assembly.
You're right, there is a tool just for this install. If you have followed me for awhile you may have noticed that I like to either build my own tools or try to do things on a budget because not everyone has access to the proper tool. I've been installing these drive gears this way for over 25 years without one single problem but, if I ever get my hands on you if those tools I will be sure to do a video on it.
