The tearing away of the S on his chest to me means a sort of rejection of the idea of us trusting in some superman or godlike figure to solve our problems for us and that in defying the malignant powers that be we have to stand for ourselves and eachother.

If you haven't heard it yet you should listen to Disturbed - A reason to fight it's a has really good message and also shows the range of Davids voice when you compare it to The sound of silence some of the more heavy stuff they've made.
