The first time I noticed this as a kid was watching that video of Cream blowing up the Albert Hall with "Crossroads," and then being so disappointed when I heard the studio version. Since then ALL my favourite bands are the ones that sound better live, because you can feel the passion and the sheer joy they're experiencing in just letting rip.

It's Maynard's physicality that sells it. The fact that he can twist and contort his body while still delivering a pitch perfect vocal performance is astounding.
@cottontailcustoms
@cottontailcustoms Месяц назад
Disagree. The live song has more energy for sure but his vocal performance is definitely more raw and not at his best quality. I don’t know why all these reaction videos use live performances like this instead of hearing them at their full potential. Is it a music rights violation thing?

This song changed the music scene in a way that at least for me changed the whole vibe of the world. The hair bands were finally done and buried as this song took over, the grunge scene was laid open and exposed fore it's stupidity and repetitive copying. It was like a new dawn of actual real music that reminded me of the 70's vibe.

Saw them live in the mid 90's shortly after Undertow released, they were getting 'big' but weren't quite there yet. Absolutely shocked with the way the music and Maynard's voice and lyrics blew me away. And I'd already listened to them on cassette. btw, I love how your (The Vocalyst) first comment about this is "it's very moving". Yep, that's TOOL.

“No tension” Haha just wait till you hear their old old stuff😬 Tool is so artistic and talented I love them. They’ve always made me feel like Im being put under a spell. Usually in a darker sense, but it is powerful and important to face your shadow, they do tend to balance it out a bit. Whether thats good or a bad is personal choice I suppose, either way there is spiritually in music, dark and light, they really know how to make you feel it. You can see it in her face almost immediately. Lol. These men are deep philosophical and metaphysical thinkers, its in the lyrics and even the rythm, timing, and numerological patterns within the music, often designed to represent sacred geometry. Plus symbolism in the music videos. Id recommend checking out all their stuff.

In my opinion TOOL has one of the strongest discographies of any modern musical act. Especially amongst those still relevant. They have consistently delivered diverse, progressive, and a "unique to them" sound without ever sacrificing artistic expression. Every song sounds like tool, but in every song you get lost in the complexities of the music and are lulled my Maynard's vocals. You are somehow always locked into a groove with the weirdest disconcerting time signatures, and your ears will never get tired of it.

First time I heard Tool I was cramped into the rear jump seat of a early 90’s Toyota pickup. Three of us heading out of town for work. Middle of summer, the truck was black and the AC sucked in those things. One of the rear tires was “out of balance” so if he hit 60 it would vibrate like a bastard. He kept hitting sixty then backing off. Over and over. I already didn’t like the fucker driving but an hour in I wanted to beat the shit out of him. Then he popped in Undertow on those shitty factory speakers with just a cheapo deck and Radio shack sub at my feet adding to my cramping (probably the worst car stereo setup in the history of man). At first thought “what is this dogshit? Can’t even hear the fucking singer. Mumbling son of a bitch.” Part way through Intolerance I thought it was maybe not bad. Prison Sex came on and halfway through I thought they were pretty good. Then the breakdown and I thought “this drummer kicks ass”. Then Sober punched me in the face and I was hooked. No bullshit I remember every bit of my thought process during that whole album. When it was done I told him to play it again. He said “fuck that” and loaded Primus Seas of Cheese which I had never heard either. That asshole had some damn good taste in music.

Maynard James Keenan 🎉 has one of the most phenomenal voices ever! Extremely powerful, mind-bending! And he's a hell of a winemaker..🍷🎊🍷

I often tell my husband, who introduced me to Tool, that there will probably never be another voice like MJK and never another band like Tool. Uniqueness amongst musicians is getting more and more rare.

I was raised on Rush, Pink Floyd, and Zeppelin, and didn’t think there would ever be anything so incredible again, so when I found Tool as a teenager I was absolutely blown away. I never asked to buy a CD but I wish I had cuz I didn’t really get to listen to them until they put themselves on streaming services a few years ago.

There are actually 2 other bands led by MJK you may want to check out. A perfect Circle and Pucifer. You will not be disappointed.

I have never watched your channel before, but this video was recommended based on my viewing history (big TOOL fan here)... Watching you react had me in tears. That was wild. Thank you for making this video.

Tool took me in and out of madness. I was obsessed and blessed to see them twice and meet Maynard and Adam Jones.

That performance gives me chills every time I see it. I've probably watched it dozens of times now and the feeling is never diminished by familiarity.

This was the soundtrack of my youth. The horror of my abuse. The rage, acceptance, and gagging impotence of it. This is also the soundtrack for my recovery. There's no other band, no other voice, no other lyrics that tell the whole story for me. From beginning to end. Maynard still makes me laugh at where I am, but I still weep for my child self.
