This 70 year old grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and I was incensed when I heard a heavy metal band did a cover. Then I listened to David...and knew I'd never really heard the song before. My heart stopped, my breath left me and I cried.
Me too. 70 in June and this took my breath away when I heard it. Someone said that Simon and Garfunkel gave a warning with the song and that this version is the rage that the world didn't listen. I can't remember exactly but that's the gist.
I have to tell you, I have heard this song probably 400 times since it came out. I have cried and been left with goosebumps to the point of shaking almost everytime. This song speaks to my soul; the frustration, the anger, the sadness/hopelessness at the words "Fools said I you do not know, silence like a cancer grows". Many of us said, when this was first released, the original was a prophetic, almost, warning nobody listened "People hearing without listening" Now, every time you bow your head to the cell phone/tablet/laptop remember these words "And the people boed and prayed, to the neon god THEY MADE"
I think you will really like this reaction to this song also. This chick was unprepared for Disturbed. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o4rZljPnJxg.html
Probably one of the best reactions I've seen. I did chuckle a bit when you stopped it early. I thought "You ain't seen nothin' yet" The facial expressions and stunned silence at the end say it all. Thank you !
🎉Me too!! Nobody expects itso it's awesome to see other people having that same "moment" that I had the first time I heard Disturbeds version of this song.
And the fact that he was actually sick with the flu during this performance and was worried sick he’d blow it, pacing back and forth in the dressing room and came out and CRUSHED IT!!! 🤘
Metal singers have a lot of range that really should be experienced with more like this, however this is just jaw dropping. I can't imagine it ever better
I’m obsessed with this version of this classic and gets goosebumps every time I hear it, which is easily over 100 times. Have watched tons of reaction videos for this version and your reaction is my favorite. Blew my mind the first time I heard it and it still does!
The best cover of any song ever and the BEST performance of a song EVER! I cry from deep down inside every time listened to it (all the time). A story told like no other 🙏🏻
The "devilish" voice was the sound of DEFIANCE against the sound of silence, and the cold, empty neon lights, and the fucking loneliness. That moment he used the METAL VOICE to express anger & defiance was astonishing and absolutely top of the peak. THAT metal voice brought LIFE into the dead of the night. It was the rolling rage that metal music delivers like no other. I like metal, cause it expresses, (rather than impresses), and it really relieves from tension in the end.
I've never been a fan of Metal in general, too old but I do have a fanatical appreciation for good singing and quality performance. My 4 kids, from 28 to 48 always keep me on the straight and narrow path. You nailed it with your comment thank you.
I'm 41 and The Sound of Silence is one of the 5 greatest songs ever made and Disturbed version is the way this song is supposed to be sung. As much I love the original this version makes me do something the original never has: it makes me cry. You know it's music in its truest form when it touches your soul.
David surprised his own self with this Cover. He said, when he had finished the recording of it, he sat in the booth by himself for three hours, listening to it...!
That's a new little story about this song that I've never heard before, wonder if it's true, probably, I think I listened to it for three hours after the first time I heard it too! thanks for sharing!
I cannot stop watching this. When I was a young girl my dad loved Simon and Garfunkel and he played their music all the time. I can't remember if he played them on cassette or eight track, but regardless, they were played all the time. As a young person I didn't like having to listen to them all the time. But, now as an adult, I am so thankful to my dad for introducing me to so many different types of music and genres the way he did. This cover is probably my favorite cover of any song. I wish my dad was still here so he could hear this version of one of his favorite songs. He would love this. Thank you for reacting to this. Sorry if I got too long winded 😊
great dad. same here, i grew up on Disturbed, but also while listening to my old man tunes. love both version. Paul Simon (Simon & Garfunkel) said to Disturbed, he totally love their version. Simon approved. 50 years apart, the Original Simon & Garfunkel delivered, Disturbed owned it.
This preformance NEVER ceases to touch my soul. You're reaction, the continual suprise and the obvious pure astonishment couldn't be more appropriate. You FEEL this music/song just as much as you hear it.
This is one of the best covers of this song and nothing against Paul and Art but this probably beats it, and the power behind his voice is unheard of honestly! It changes the dynamics of this song so much! Considering it’s about the “sound” of silence.
The thing I love the most about watching reaction videos for this song, is how almost everyone is like, "I HEARD this was good..." and then watching their faces when they actually hear it, because there are no words to describe just HOW good it is. Seeing the reactions never gets old.
This is the abnormal for them. They're a Nu-Metal band, then did this cover, and like you, everyone went, HOLY SHIT!! David Draimon, the lead singer, is classically trained. It's how he can "Fry" his voice (the Growl/Scream) and not damage his chords, its VERY hard to do. And you're right, deep tenor, to approaching alto. He has an amazing voice and range.
Your face was like mine when I first saw their video. I vaguely remember the original which was more a folk type song, but my mouth just fell open and all of the hairs on my arms stood up when I heard this. I never get sick of listening to this, and his voice is stunning. Who knew, I was never into Disturbed and had never heard of them before this.
I have the original by Simon and Garfunkel. I also have Disturbed on CD. The first time I watched this video, knowing it was Disturbed, I was thinking that they would destroy a song I loved and would say it. I listened to it and my reaction was not as extreme as the reviewer above, but pretty close. I also listened to it 3 times in a row and was more impressed every time I heard this song. I am more upset that David does not get to showcase that voice more while singing with Disturbed. What a waste of a voice.
@@robinpeterson2185 Disturbed generally does at least a cover per album.. it's an easy way to not have to write a song, get a song release, but almost all of them have been incredible, and complimentary but different to the source material. (They did a re-make of Shout that is great, and a remake of Lands of Confusion that is also great.)
I watched this video when it aired the first time and it became my favorite "new " version. No one can top the Simon and Garfunkel version but he changed the passion and in turn changed the song a lot.
David Draiman is a Classically trained opera singer as well as a Cantor. Paul Simon, who wrote the original, and sang it with Garfunkel back in the 60's, sent Draiman a letter complimenting him on this cover. Think about that for a minute.
No he is not classically trained opera singer and his Grandfather was the cantor, not him. There is a live interview with him on Wikipedia Fact or Fiction that he talks about what is true and not true. He was a hospital administrator while trying to make Disturbed known.
No.....Mr Draiman was Professionally trained as a Cantor at his Temple. Not classical training or Opera......it is unique. I used to think what you said was true...until a Jewish buddy of mine explained the difference to me.
I agree. I love watching these reaction videos. When he goes to that super low vocal it just gives me chills every time I hear it and I have listened to this many times! Check out Pentatonix version. It is also one of my favorites!!!
I have my 98yr old Dad Sitting With Me....Ano 5yrs later 😊..Dad Is Crazy For This Version Of SOS...He Keeps Shouting At The End " Gawn Son" He Turned To Me & Said...."That Boy Needs A Doctor" 😅😅😅 No Insult Intended! You Know What No One Has Spoke About The SOS....Help...!!! Loved Yr Video So Did He 😂😂!
Holy shit! I haven't heard him for a while, and even though his voice is well known to be extraordinary, in his usual performances, there's a lot more of that raspy growl he uses to such amazing effect, so the clarity and all round extraordinary beauty of his vocals isn't as clear, or it wasn't to me. This blew my mind. Wow! What's incredible, as well, is that in all his years of performing loudly with all that rasp, his voice is still so beautiful. He either discovered some secret, or has a hell of a voice coach. Loved your reaction, PW - pretty much the same as mine, and I have heard him quite a bit, though not for a couple of years. Wild!
Facial expressions are the most important element of a reaction. Your lighting is so low we were unable to enjoy that element. Your analysis however was spot on. Gobsmacked! Exactly 🙂
His interpretation of the song was amazing! He gave meaning to the words and took the soul on a journey - I doubt I've ever seen a cover do something like this before. I loved this. I also appreciated your reaction to it which was similar to my own.
Whats there to say? David Draiman just did one of the best live performances ever!!!!!! Absolutely amazing voice ---so clean and his pitch is unbelievable
It lets all your emotions out of the jar. He was ill when he performed this too. I cry and get goosebumps every time - I'm almost addicted to hearing it.
I had the exact same expressions on my face the first time I heard this version. I cry and get goose bumps every time I listen to it and I've heard it 1000 times
I fell totally and absolutley in love with Disturbed, the very first time i listened to this version, and it was done with so much emotion and passion, i am 68, and i have since listened to disturbed's every song, and i am now a devoted fan, i wish i heard and seen these 15 years ago. i cried when i first heard the sound of silence, i am forever and totally a fan, and if they do not play this song at my funeral, i am not going x
20 years ago when my son was 16 years old he played Disturbed for me. I made the remark that he had a wonderful voice and that he was going to be famous, my son said he already is. the cover of this song has maybe doubled David Draimans fanbase all by itself. I am a real fan. now you know why this cover has been seen over 700 million times!!!!!!
Your live reaction is one of the best and most honest. Good on you. Indeed it affects most of us in that this is a world class cover of a world class song. Brings chills, sweats, tears all at once.
Gobsmacked is a good description. This came up on my suggested for you videos. My reaction: "Man, I bet this sucks". But I hit play. Like you, I sat there with my jaw on the floor. The way he sings the last verse still gives me chills to this day. Without a doubt, one of the best covers I've ever heard.
In the 70s my father let me play the original LP album. You should have seen the look on his face when I played the Disturbed version with headphones for him a few days ago :D
6:32 You were told this rendition was "pretty good?????". That's an odd way to describe utter brilliance. This is the best cover I've heard of ANY song by ANY band ever. Yeah, pretty good.
Yup! You nailed it...David Draiman's voical range and quality is special. He's in a league all his own when comes to emotional vocal expression. Disturbed's version of 'Sound of Silence' obviously sets a new high for music, vocals, and expression. Your reaction was well worth watching.
David Draiman was sick that night! I had the same reaction and have probably listened to it 100 times. He is so incredibly talented and I agree with your angel/devil (demon) remark. I never really cared for the Simon and Garfunkel version so I never really listened to the words! When I listened to this version, I was so shocked I HAD to listen to the words. I have new respect for Simon & Garfunkel because Simon wrote a song for the ages and Garfunkel could hit high notes too. Paul Simon said he liked Disturbed's rendition best. So powerful!
No one else has had you concern about copyright laws. I am glad you changed your mind and played it through. I am glad to see the impact that it had on you. This is one of the greatest song covers ever.
I love him his voice is haunting-the band didn't want to do it but he talked them into doing the cover-they also did a cover of land of confusion years ago originally done by Genesis
I grew up with the original playing a lot thanks to my parents, who *actually* grew up with it, and I love the original, but it never moved me like this one does. This version is on a whole other plane of existence. It's so powerful. I could hear it a million times and it would still touch my soul. I feel it in my chest and I cry every time I hear it. David is so awesomely talented it makes my head spin. Unfortunately, my dad refuses to entertain that this version is even equal to the original, much less that it might even outshine the original. Stubborn, stubborn man.
im so late..... but me and my twin brother's first gig was Disturbed at the Barowlands in Glasgow (age 15 now 34) . my Boyfriend now loves them. but this song.... i have alsways loved David. but this song!!! its suits him so well. he can show the range he has,... his talent is just amazing but he also shows the song again in a different way. its all beautiful.
Such an amazing song. I love the journey he takes you on with his voice. He punctuates the message with his voice going up at just the right moment to make you listen to every word. His annunciation is incredibly clear as well. You feel the plea of concern with where we are as a society giving you chills. Makes you need a few moments to contemplate life after it is over. Loved your reaction!
Prime example, you never know what to expect from folks out there. What a gifted individual, and he's able to do this for us. Also I believe that you are spot on with what you say.
This is not the normal sound of disturbed. He was classically trained in opera growing up. That is how he has so much range with his vocals. I love your reaction to this song. PLEASE SHOW YOUR REACTION TO THEIR OTHER MUSIC
I'm sorry, I do not mean to sound harsh, but I'm seriously fucking tired of people claiming the same "classically trained" bullshit about David Draiman on these videos. He was not "classically trained"; he merely trained to be a cantor in synagogue. The cantor is charged to add depth and feeling to prayers. This "classically trained" BS deducts from the fact that David's gift is far deeper than that would suggest. FFS, people, stop furthering this bullshit, and give David the credit that he deserves.
After watching your reaction to the beginning of the song, I couldn't wait for your reaction to 4:37 +. Your reaction didn't disappoint. I think that I must have had the same expression when I first heard this cover.
