I am a 70 year old Great Grandmother, had never heard of Disturbed, I have watched at least 11 reviewers just this afternoon of this song. Each and every time I hear it I get goose bump and tear up. There is something in the way they have done this song that is so very touching. I decided to listen to more of thier music because of the choices in songs.

As a man who lives with bipolar and schizophrenia, it is a song that I put on when I start to lose the battles with my hallucinations or depression side of things. Sometimes both. It took me years to do it, but I found the strength to open up about my illnesses and I no longer hide them. It has cost me friends, because I refused to put up a poker face and play happy, but it has also kept me safe from myself. As I told someone else... it took me breaking the sound of silence and getting help that saved my life. When someone lives with depression in silence... they will die and it likely will be by their own hand.

I know this response is a bit late but as a person who suffered suicidal depression for many years - and ultimately should never have survived the time I actually acted on it - I love seeing/reading/hearing about people who have battled through depression and manage to come out the other side. Best of luck to you and it might not mean much but a complete stranger like myself is very proud of you for getting yourself better.

David “the lead singer” said they covered this song from a perspective of anger at people for failing to heed the warning of the original song, that no one communicated with each other anymore, all they did was watch TV “the neon god”.. and instead of starting to communicate all we have done is replace tv with cell phones... he also said this was the hardest song he had ever sang... he is a classically trained opera singer, which sounds crazy for a metal singer haha... this was one of my fav songs as a kid in the 70s.. this and behind blue eyes by the who
@marcialavine1272
@marcialavine1272 3 года назад
He was trained as a cantor, not in opera. Cantors lead services and sing service music, and they may seem indistinguishable from a cantorial soloist, who may also do those things. Both may have very good singing voices, and both may have had extensive musical training. The cantor, however, has something extra: a deep background in Jewish worship and Hebrew language, knowledge of both present and past liturgies, and training in leading and teaching a wide variety of Jewish musical forms. A cantor is clergy, qualified to officiate at all lifecycle events (weddings, funerals, namings) and to provide pastoral support.

Yeah. I can sense that like my husband, he might not fully understand why she is crying, much like my own husband, but he is willing to listen to why, just like my husband. I’ve seen one piece of entertainment make my husband cry. It was Sons of Anarchy, when one of the bikers died. He isn’t a cryer, but he had lost an old biker buddy right before that. He feels things deeply but expressed it differently. I get that Vin is much the same way. He sits like a stoic and thinks through his emotions, and puts them to words, but he always wants Sori to go first.

I didn't have any idea of the setlist, so when they played this short set of songs for suicide awareness, and this song came out I was frozen. I couldn't see or hear anything else but David's powerful voice. Imagine a bunch of metalheads, with their cellphones or lighters raised, people crying, singing this song at one voice. It was something I will never forget. I felt my chest warm and my eyes were literally crying. Right at that moment this song became the best cover of a classic song I've ever heard.

One of the brilliant things about this song is the duality of the two main themes. Both light and sound are shown in two ways. There's the light of the neon god, the grand distraction, versus the natural light that actually reveals the truth. There's the silence that arises from the screaming of the gears of our ephemeral empires, against the true silence where introspection can arise. The abject social isolation, the dehumanization of the technological, is clearly stated here, and has only grown more poignant as we go further down the road in the direction of the neon god. Solid 10. The great songs echo down the years, because they talk about experiences that will always be part of being human.

Sori nailed it when she said " I probably don't have a clue what the song is about, but I have my own story.." Music, sometimes, isn't just about trying to understand the deeper meaning of it, or trying to get yourself to see the "art" behind it. Sometimes, music is a personal language that is speaking to you in your own way. This song might have meant something to Simon and Garfunkel, and something different to Disturbed, but it means something else to her, and that is what I think makes music so personal and healing. It is your own medicine, your own message and voice. Cheers Sori!

I might be wrong, but I think that the song is essentially about a failure to communicate and free thinking: The first verse basically was that the singer had a vision while sleeping... that is a dream... which is confirmed by the 2nd verses first line "In restless dreams I walked alone" Then he realised he wasn't alone, there were 10,000 people, maybe more.. but they aren't talking, they are silent, well they may be talking but aren't saying anything, or at least not that anyone notices, because they aren't listening. He then tries to break the pattern, by trying to speak and reach out to people, but no one was listening. "Then the people bow and pray to the Neon God they made" - So they have ignored the person who was trying to teach them something, and instead they have created a god that is a neon sign (or a metaphor for a tv).... The Neon God I believe represents modern media... we created this, but worship it and look at it as our source for truth (This is reminiscent of the Golden Calf, a false god, from Exodus).... The sign said the words of the prophets are written on the subway wall and tenement halls.... these are again adverts, which are all over walls of subway stations and on buildings .... so the sign said truth comes from the adverts... The God we have created is telling us that truth comes from advertisements... promoting capitalism over trying to communicate with each other and helping each other. So essentially this song is saying that commercialism and media is drowning out free thought.

A pretty good interpretation. The Neon God was the Television and advertisements that pull us away from thought and speaking to each other. The words of the prophets on the tenement walls and subway stations and buildings is the graffiti of the everyday person. Those are the true thoughts and emotions, not what is displayed by the media and advertising. When Simon and Garfunkle wrote this it was during the Vietnam era and the Peace protests. They had begun to feel that no one was listening any longer to each other, they were no longer willing to speak up. Feeling like it not longer mattered what they said. I grew up with social activist parents in the 60's. And this is one of theri favorite songs.

It's 2020 and I'm just now seeing this reaction. First, I love both of your reactions and what each of you took from the song. That was incredible and I believe this song can mean so many different things to different people. When Paul Simon wrote this song he was actually in a dark bathroom. "Hello darkness my old friend " there was light coming from a streetlamp outside. He stated is was the best contrast of light and dark to write. He said the meaning of the song is about communication or lack there of. You both hit on that part. And you are absolutely right on the neon God was about technology replacing communication. Neon lights had already been out for 40 plus years when the song was written but it was still an incredible attention getter. The sign flashing out its warning about the words of the prophets was in reference to there being knowledge and information all around you and you need to know where to look but with technology you won't see it when it's right in front of you. The original was definitely a warning to us all that technology would lead to us not communicating or truly being able to love each other. And we need to not get wrapped up in the technology. And look where we ate today. People say Disturbeds version is anger because we didn't heed the warning.
