The standard range Model Y really impressed me and will be more than enough for most people. I cover what my experience was like driving this for a few days.

One thing to add; the max charging speed on the standard range model y is 230kW compared to 250 in all of the Model Y variants. I made a mistake saying they were the same in this video.

Yeah, the charging curve on that 4680 model y is horrendous. If you don't road trip am sure it's fine as a daily, but if you road trip frequently, that charging curve is the worst in Tesla's lineup. The model 3 rwd peaks at 175kw and has a way better charging curve, in addition to charging faster from a amount of time spent waiting at the charger and mph gained in super charging.

Nca and ncm is better than lfp especially in cold climates and you’re in Canada. L. Should have stuck with the lr. Charging it up to 100 everyday is not good same as any other batteries. It can handle it more than the ncm and nca but it’s not recommended or healthy to charge it every year for every year to 100. Common L. It should be charged 90 regularly not 100. Just wearing out the battery faster than normal.

Having had a 3LR for 18 months I feel the range is irrelevant. It doesn't really matter if the car does 220,250 or 300 miles. I stop more often than that and actually enjoy the charge stop and have a proper break.

Totally agree with an addendum. My 3 is the LR RWD. On long trips I can keep the battery in the perfect zone mentioned by Jeff Dahn for battery longevity, thanks to the range of that car. Around 75 minutes is all I want to sit in the car before getting out. A shorter range LFP would also be good for this style of travel.

I got my M3 SR+ in March 2021 for just under $40K out the door, including red paint. LR was +$10K more, and the P was $14K over the SR. I have just as much fun, get all the OTA updates, have access to the Supercharger network, and get all the perks and benefits of the EV lifestyle - plus saved myself a boatload of dough in the purchase, AND the daily operation (it’s so damn efficient!). Don’t sell the SR short just on the numbers on a spec sheet. I’ve been across the US and up and down the West Coast in my trusty SR! Great video as always. 👍🏼

I bought a M3SR a year ago. I can charge the LFP to 100% and I get 250-260 real world range in mixed driving - and if I only drive it around town I get almost exactly the EPA range of 269. The worst range I got was last winter on a 200 mile, 75MPH drive on a frigid, very windy day. So I stopped at a charger and in the time it took to walk inside, use the restroom, pour a cup of coffee, pay for it, and walk back to the car, I had almost 100 more miles of range. Unless you can’t charge at home, routinely drive an insane number of miles and live in an area devoid of fast chargers, this kind of range is absolutely fine. I honestly NEVER even think about range now, just like I don’t think about it in my gas car.

I know there are a lot of EV owners with small bladders from what I am seeing around the web, but I would simply prefer the 300-400 miles of real world range over the ubiquity of fast chargers. Charging takes way too long, even in Teslas. Moreover, charging will become even more of an annoyance once EV adoption rates exceed ICE vehicles; sitting in a queue for charging is not the best use of time, which totally negates faster charging speeds.

I have driven to vegas 5 times and have had no issues with anything. Its ride is more comfortable than any model y I have driven. It is plenty fast and the range has never been a problem at all. 1 stop from la to vegas. Ride is very quiet even with the radio off, I actually have 0 complaints since buying this car and I'm trying to find things i do not like. My fuel savings is 5/1 over my ice car. As a former Model Y LR owner, I’ve found that not only is the advertised range very far off from the real world range, but some other cars, like my current 2019 Audi e-tron, have an Efficiency mode that dramatically increases range, including automatically switching the AC to an Econ mode (but allowing you to undo that), lowering the car’s ride height and so on, resulting in far higher ranges on long road trips than their advertised range. So in my case, the official range is 209m. But in the real world, if I go on a road trip and stay at 65mph on highways, my range is 290 miles. This is a longer range than my 2020 Model Y Long Range had in the real world at 65 mph at the time. If I’m not in efficiency mode, my range is definitely somewhat less than the Model Y’s was, but since I have a home charger, that really doesn’t bother me. Tesla should stop the false advertising, but they should also invest in better more tech for efficiency driving on longer road trips.

I opted for the SR model Y largely because I go on very few road trips so the extra range is not important to me. Every two months I do a 210 mile daily round-trip from Palm Springs to Anaheim via a stop in Redlands. Starting with 100% charge I complete the trip with around 20% left when I get home. So for me saving $3000 on the purchase was a no-brainer. In addition, I have found good use for the rear shelf, not included in the LR model, when parking with packages or luggage that I do not want to be visible The build quality of my 2023 is exceptionally good. I literally could find no problems with the fit and finish. I agree that Tesla’s hype over the 4680 battery was a big nothing burger. I am taking some risk that the 4680 will hold up as well as the 2170 battery, but so far so good.

The more you charge the more important FAST charging is. Most people with kids on a road trip only want to stop for a few minutes to get the driving out of the way. That said yes they will stop to eat. So if the car could do 400 miles real world range that would fix the issue. Drive until it's time to eat. Charge speed would have to be quick enough so after eating a mcdonalds meal the car is charged. So that's 30 minutes tops

This is far less than wrapping the front end. Is there something reacting with the paint in vinyl? Is the front end / vinyl bra passe, out of style? Maybe voids Tesla's paint warranty? A 400 mile range Model Y would annihilate all other cars, including ICE cars. My 11 year old Prius V can still get over 320 miles/tank on long trips. As to your question of why Tesla can't be honest about vehicle range the answer starts at the top of the company, namely Elmo, who seems to be allergic to the truth, unless he stands to personally profit from it. Having driven a AWD LR Model Y twice and really enjoyed it , the FSD was a freaky experience, I am still considering buying one, EXCEPT that unmentioned expense of having to upgrade my home electrical service from 100amps to 200 amps. It is something the sales rep at the dealership never asked or mentions.
@jimfergusondev
@jimfergusondev Год назад
0:57 The range is entirely dependent on speed and acceleration. The state of charge indicates that he achieved the expected range at 45 mph. I drove 450 miles, with a maximum speed of FSD 85 mph, which required 3 supercharging stops. When I limited the maximum speed to FSD 80 mph, it resulted in 2 supercharging stops. So, it's clear that speed significantly affects range due to aerodynamics.

The ability to full charge the LFP battery often is an easy sell to someone whose experience with batteries is limited to a laptop or a cellphone. If you drove the previous day only in the city, you’ll have a displayed range based on the city driving. If you drive today on a highway, the displayed range at the start of the trip will be so different than the range you'll get in this case that you’ll think your car is bad or something worse happened to your battery. So yeah, I’d say you should do your homework before talking about what other EV display in their GOM. Use the Energy screen and you’ll have in the Tesla the same thing other EV have in their GOM.

You can easily get the EPA range if you’re willing to drive 70mph or less. We get 270 miles on the nose every charge commuting (which keeps the speed below 70) in our RWD Model 3 but if we head out on a trip and kick it up our range suffers. Typically during the commute we are averaging 180watts a mile. On a trip at higher speeds that jumps to 240 to 250 watts per mile. I have also noticed if you need lots of heat or AC from the HVAC you will drop efficiency a bit as well.

No car, gas or electric meets its EPA mpg or range when compared to real world conditions. The number and testing methods are governed by public law, details are easily discovered by a simple internet search. Don’t like the number, convince the EPA to change the test. You’re spitting into the wind with your complaint.

I have a ‘22 MY LR, and get about 270 wh/mi long term average over 12k miles. I can get 250 wh/mi, but I have to be driving below 70 mph, averaging 60-65 mph at mixed freeway speeds. Real world expectations are about 180 to 220 miles at 70 mph driving 80% to 10%, depending on wind, and cargo weight. Which isn’t bad, but I wouldn’t believe the numbers Tesla promises for my Tesla on 20” wheels.

I do not think the 4680s are at endgame yet. The 4680s are supposed to be solid state. If Tesla was mass producing actual solid state batteries it would be huge huge news. My guess is right now they are just putting normal battery guts into 4680 form factor.

100% agree on the BS mileage numbers. We need to start a campaign to get that changed. #mileagehonesty or some such thing. On your comment about range anxiety going away when more superchargers are installed, I think that’s only half the issue. Charging needs to be faster. If the range doesn’t improve or goes down and I need to charge frequently, it had better be faster or it will continue to be a frustration point. The charging experience needs to be similar in timing and frequency to an ICE vehicle if you want buy-in from the masses.

Thanks for the video. Here in Australia we're lucky with the Chinese built MY standard range, to have a CATL LFP battery not the 4680 cells used in the North American version. I don't find the range a problem at all as we purely do city/highway driving and always charge at home using off peak electricity at just over 8c/kWHr (5.5c US) so with solar, it costs us virtually nothing to charge. Great car. Very happy we went with the Tesla MY. I find 0-100 kM/Hr (0-60mph in US) fast enough!

Tesla is still top EV because of it charging network. But the competition already has in some cases better VEHS overall just not as good charging network. Once solid state batteries or some other more efficient battery comes on line then they may lose the lead entirely.

My 2023 Model Y LR 7seater just died yesterday while it had 254 miles of range left. I needed to use it later in the afternoon and the car wasn't connecting in the Tesla app nor was the keycard able to open the car. It was dead sitting on the driveway with less than 5500 on the odometer. Tesla sent a 3rd party tow truck and driver said he tows a bunch of teslas per day and 5 of them had this issue today. He jumped the 12. volt lithium ion battery and said this battery overheats and shuts itself down. the car was driving fine after that. 3 hours later car is unresponsive again. I've had a bunch of new cars before but none died on me this was a first and surprisingly at just 5500 miles.

@ratukamina
@ratukamina Год назад
@@Trust_but_Verify Yes it was hot temp was in the 90s. I contacted Tesla roadside assistance again but was told to pay few hundred for towing to service center since (according to paperwork) I was advised to drive car to service center instead of it being towed however I don’t recall the tow truck driver saying that all he insisted on was that I drive the car around for 5 mins which I did while he waited in his truck. So since I declined to pay I have to schedule service and jumpstart it on my own and drive to service center.
@ratukamina
@ratukamina Год назад
@@Trust_but_Verify update cars high voltage battery controller was replaced and it was working fine until two days ago it was dead again with main battery at 74%. I jump started and left it at the service center. At this point this vehicle is very unreliable luckily it has been dying while parked on the driveway so I had the jump starter in my garage to unlock and start it otherwise no point in even carrying a jump starter in the car if traveling since car would die and stay locked.
