Welcome to Just Get a Tesla, where I do a series of tests and challenges to help show people that instead of shopping around for EVs they should just get a Tesla...
In this video I review my Tesla Model Y after a year of ownership. In 20,000 miles I have driven the length of the UK many times over - motorways, fast roads, twisty roads, city roads and a few dangerous ledges.
There are so many things to talk about, but I have split my review into subjects - practicality, driving, costs, tech, and the x-factor.

@@singlee4400 That's a difficult question to answer, it really depends on your own personal circumstances. I bought mine outright for £62K a year ago but with the softening in EV residuals it's now worth in the region of £42K. With that depreciation perhaps I would have been better to lease, but I didn't have a salary sacrifice option to make that tax efficient.

Great video. I am 83 years old and bought my 2021 Model Y because of Auto Pilot and FSD. It is great for older people that have lost some reaction time and vision. The ride is a little stiff and the tires must be rotated, because the rear tires wear faster than the front ones. Other than that, I can't find any faults and love this car.

Hi Ian, good review. My average on 1yr 17,500 miles about 306wh/m so 3.25 m/kw Octopus Go and solar, it has cost me less than 3p a mile on energy. Insurance £680. I reckon about 23k on my tyres. Can get 2 dumpy bags in the back to the dump. Autopilot brilliant on motorways and dual carriageways for the most long distance tireless driving ever. Excellent stereo. Over the air updates brilliant. No servicing. No car tax. Superchargers on a trip, brilliant and they all work,. As soon as they bring in the updates like the new model 3 to the Y I will be ordering a new one. Best car I have ever owned in 50 years of driving and I was a petrolhead.

I’ve had my Model Y for 2 years - 47,000 miles, zero issues. All I’ve done is change tires (once) and add wiper fluid. Flawless. Awesome daily driver and road trip car. I agree it is tuned (suspension and steering) more sporty - if you’re used to a floaty, mushy, bloated American car feel, this will feel stiff. But if you like a ripping, road gripping feel, you will love it. This car is so powerful that there is no way it would work with mushy suspension & steering.

Great Video and I agree with pretty well everything you said. I've had my MYP for about 4 months and done about 7000km and love it. I find suspension firm but not uncomfortable. Recently I did 150km on Australian gravel roads and was blown away by how it handled on gravel. I attributed that to the "traction control" but when I got home I eventually found out I had not turned the Traction control on! Insurance wise it was only AUS$100 more than our 3 year 4WD which was insured for half the value of the Tesla. I use excess Home solar to charge it on most days and it costs me 1c/km to do this which is all I get for any excess solar from my electrical utility.

@justgetatesla

I’ve bought it on finance, it’s considered a purchase but there is zero VAT which can be reclaimed. So my saving was the 100% write down against Corporation Tax and paying for the car pre-tax. If you lease you can reclaim 10% VAT. You can only reclaim 20% VAT if there is zero personal use. Which they won’t accept on a car

I own a 2023 Model Y RWD and agree totally with all you say. I test drove one last year but the suspension was too hard for my old back. Test drove one earlier on this year with the comfort suspension, night and day difference hence why I now have one. Tesla UK assured me that all cars built from the start of this year have the comfort suspension. My biggest regret is that I can't play my music in such an expensive tech laden car which is nuts. I have all my songs on a usb stick that will only work if I use the port in the glovebox which means disabling the dash cam and sentry modes. I bought a splitter designed for Tesla cars but it doesn't work on the newer model Y's which is just ridiculous. If anyone knows what does work you'd make my day. By the way you use the right hand scroll wheel to use Tesla commands not the left one !

I've had my mine for 9 months and 10,000 miles and I love the car and its cheap to run. My negative observations include: 1) Mine is blue and it feels as if it scratches and chips just by looking at it the wrong way, the paintwork is very poor. 2) the Tesla vision (no parking sensors fitted) works well in reverse and so long as it’s not raining, Tesla Vision for forward parking is useless. Tesla need to fit a camera on the nose and that may sort it. 3) The automatic wipers are rubbish and need sorted; every other car I've owned with auto wipers was far superior. The wipers go at hyper speed with its dry and when it’s raining they seem to ignore the rain. 4) The phantom braking on cruise or autopilot is awful, its fine on motorways but not A roads in the northeast of Scotland. If it sees a bus, van or truck coming the other way it panics and brakes. Again, every other car I’ve owned with adaptive cruise was superior and that includes a Skoda Superb from 2016. 5) Agree with Ian, the build quality is very poor, so many squeaks and rattles. I’ve had it back to Tesla a few times to look at squeaks and rattles and no joy.

Interesting review from a certain point of view only issues I have with it is the effective tax subsidy in place will no doubt be removed over time and the means required to afford to buy it Initially which rules out a lot of the population. What will be the expected cost per year over the lifetime of the vehicle? I reckon the service life for me would be about 14 years though it's debatable might be better on EV.

At 34 mpg on premium unleaded, and no facility to home charge, terraced house, except on a 3 pin, but have superchargers not far from us, would it be a viable consideration. I've come from a 280bhp 2019 Focus ST to an EV6, after 25 years of pops and bangs!! It's a new world and I'm really enjoying it after 20 months of ownership. Now considering a Y for the second car in the house. It you don't have the ability to add a proper home 7kw charger (or similar) I couldn't recommend strongly enough that you don't buy an EV. Charging from a 3 pin plug isn't viable long term, it's too slow and in some cases not safe (some will argue I'm wrong, however I've seen too many melted plugs!). If you have to go and sit at the supercharger to charge every time, you will start to resent the car after the initial novelty quickly wears off. One of the nicest things about owning an EV is walking out to a car that charged whilst you are asleep.

I’ve had a MYLR for 14 months. Generally, it’s great for the reasons you describe in your video. I opted for the 20” wheels and the ride is almost unbearable at times, particularly at lower speeds over the UK’s increasingly potholed roads. Also steering rack failed leaving me stranded, Tesla did tow the car and fix it free, providing me with a loaner. I am getting the Model Y on the 15th of December. I shopped around for car Insurance. My current model 3 is costing me £537 for the year, and the Model Y is going to cost me £772 with Admiral Insurance. I thought that was quite steep, considering I've got 10+ years NCD, and no accidents or claims. I would recommend adding your car to a multi-cover policy. This is how one can get a cheaper deal. Good video and I agree with most of that. I have a Model 3 and it’s a fantastic car. Good drive, cost effective (also bought through my company), good tech and all the practicality I need. What I would disagree with is the X Factor side of things. The car is amazingly easy to live with and as a car to get from a to b, efficiently, not much (if anything) can touch it. Would I just go for a ‘fun’ drive in it though? (as I have with some other cars I’ve owned). The answer is no. For me the one thing that lets it down (in a weird sort of way) is that it is so good. For me it lacks personality and is simply a tool to get from a to b. I’d love to own a 997 Turbo to sit alongside this in the garage, as that is a car I would just drive for the fun of it. Pretty impractical compared to the Tesla, far less efficient and more costly, but it has wonderful hydraulic steering (so you can feel what is going on), amazing suspension and handling, a superb manual gearbox, the flat 6 sounds amazing and it looks gorgeous. It puts a smile on your face. For all of the Tesla’s good points (and I do like driving it) it just doesn’t quite do that for me.
@justgetatesla
@justgetatesla 8 месяцев назад
I had a Mini Cooper in 2015. Only a 3 pot petrol but it made a brilliant noise. Go-cart handling, a brilliant manual gearbox which blipped the engine on down shifts - a lot of fun and a huge amount of personality. This is like the antithesis of that experience, but I have as much fun. You can hustle the Y much harder than the Mini and it just laughs at you if you think it’s getting out of shape.

Although not a Tesla owner, i am an EV owner of almost 3 years and have had a etron 55 and now a Q8 etron during that period. Your views on Tesla, the ride. financials tech etc very much reflect mine and I can see the appeal. I do think you do a disservice to CCS operators who are working hard to improve the system and, doing around 22,000 miles a year, I don't have any real issues. I find new multiple charger stations appearing all the time. You express the benefits of company ownership (this reflects my position very well) and salary sacrifice schemes and these are two issues not often mentioned. Ofcourse, that is not appropriate for everyone and more emphasis needs to be placed on on street charging and destination charging to make it easier and cheaper for more people. I also think that something, not as strong in a Tesla, but better in others (particularly etron's,, is the charging curve. Important to understand this if you are road tripping as the charging curve is very different between a model Y and an etron for example, and the way you charge can be governed by that. My choice was EQE Suv, iX and eTron q8. EQE wasn't available in high spec, I just could never admit to owning that iX grill and the Q8 eTron is the best car I have ever had.
@justgetatesla
@justgetatesla 8 месяцев назад
Charging is subjective. Once you have 250kW top speeds - and I’ve seen close to that on many trips - the 150kW max you get seems slow. And you have a relatively fast charge speed - other cars top out slower than that. It does make a big difference on long trips, and it’s annoying if you’re charging slower and paying a lot more. I want a future government to bring together charging networks - perhaps create a Big 4 - and get rid of the Wild West approach we have now where the market can’t / won’t do it
@philhartley7551
@philhartley7551 8 месяцев назад
Charging is certainly a variable, based on many factors, but I think it worth highlighting the different charging strategies required for long road trips. In a Tesla, I believe that more, shorter stops are the best way to go because the very high charging speed is limited in duration. In something like a Q8 etron, which gets 170kW by the way, fewer stops with longer charging is the best way to go for a faster trip. I prefer to drive for 2-3 hrs, then take a proper break, so the Audi way is my preference as I see 150kW+ from 10% to around 70%, then it tails off slowly. The market will determine what happens to changing IMO. On the one hand people complain when the government gets involved and on the other hand they complain when the government doesn't get involved. The new ICE car sales ban is a good example, it is a political point and regardless, the manufacturers and charging infrasructure providers will do what they want based on the market. Same will apply to charging infrastructure infrastructure, the bad ones will be bought by the good ones and they will survive. New technology and systems finding their way and position in life.@@justgetatesla

Seen an article in the Evening Standard which says that Tesla have sold their UK Supercharger network to EV Group. It claims that the chargers will be rebranded ‘EV Point’ and opened up to all EV drivers. Does this mean the low cost, high speed charging, benefit of owning a Tesla is potentially lost.

Had mine 4 months - done 4K miles, MY23 RWD. Had two replacement screens due to constant black screen issues - can’t fault the Tesla service though. The way it drives is great, range is supposed to be 283 miles but had never quoted more than 260 and has never delivered more than 210. Clearance is poor I agree and can be problematic on quite a few roads and any with speed bumps. Mudflats scrape constantly. Quality of interior is pretty good - better than the reputation. The pleather seats are a bit too plasticky for me and mark easily. Roof trims creak and rattle a lot which is made worse because the car runs so silently. The tech is what really annoys me - the lack of phone integration would be fine if their own ecosystem worked well - anything to do with phone calls or messages is truly diabolical! Speech recognition for sending messages is the worst I’ve ever experienced and I’ve tried all different ways of talking - it produces a load of utter nonsense - in order to ‘retry’ you’re supposed to be able to double tap - it doesn’t ever work and instead usually just sends whatever nonsense it’s just captured. The screen itself and the controls within are too distracting - some windows can be swiped down out of the way - others have a tiny X - which is extremely difficult to hit on the move. The auto wipers are ridiculous - they go crazy in a faint mist and don’t bother in torrential rain - if you’re on Autopilot they just seem to come on most of the time whatever the weather. That leads me to Autopilot - I have the basic version with lane keeping - it’s absolutely rubbish - I have no confidence that it’s not going to ram me into a car to the left or right - when passing junctions on a Motorway it will usually just try to pull me to the left extremely harshly and without warning. Then there’s the sensitivity of the wheel - the level of stress involved in holding the wheel neither too lightly or with any pressure is not worth ever using it since it never seems happy so driving it with Autopilot is emotionally draining and often terrifying. It’s the worst ‘lane keeping’ aid of any car I’ve had from VW, Skoda, Subaru, MG and Hyundai. I can genuinely say I’m utterly baffled by Tesla’s hi-tech reputation ?? I don’t want another one, I don’t even want the one I’ve got.
@justgetatesla
@justgetatesla 8 месяцев назад
Interesting- different people have different cars it seems! I’ve also had Hyundai and Volvo lane assist systems and the Tesla one is so far ahead of the other two. The problems you have I haven’t had - the odd moment where it misreads something, but the Hyundai system did that a lot more. As for range, today’s video asks for a “waft mode” which would dial every down. It’s hard to get anywhere near the claimed mileage if you have a right foot trained by ICE cars to be more decisive. Hoof it in a Tesla and you burn power fast. Waft it and they will roll a long way…

Yes charging every night is much easier than just stopping by a gas station once a week and spending 5 minutes filling it with gas. And also lots and lots of power never got anyone into trouble. Sure you need to merge onto the interstate, but you don't need 0-60 in 4 seconds (especially given what it probably just did to your range). And you're already spending some money on stuff Tesla decided you were responsible for. Wait till ALL of Tesla's car issues are up to you to pay for. Insurance is going up in the US as well. The fact that Tesla doesn't have a maintenance schedule isn't a good thing. The maintenance schedule is something that it's taken older car manufacturers years to create through decades of experience. You'll find out what the service intervals SHOULD have been once we get a few more decades of EV production. And lastly, having a display with ALL your controls in one unit is a bad idea. It represents a single point of failure. Why did Tesla do this? because it's simple and cheap (not the software, the hardware). Coming up with good physical interfaces for cars and aircraft is a tough job and one Tesla doesn't really know how to do yet. When the monitor cable comes loose, how do you even drive the car?
