I always wondered why Ashley never got excited when she raged.. Same with Talisen, only Travis uses 200% off energy and I feel that’s true to barbarian class..
The Mighty Nein: "Okay, so we're agreed. We're going to do crimes and make money and generally be too cool for school." Also The Mighty Nein: "WE MUST RIGHT THESE SOCIETAL WRONGS. PIONEER MORAL CHANGE IN AN AGE OF REPRESSION. REUNITE ORPHANS AND THEIR PARENTS. PROTECT THE INNOCENT BIRD GIRL AT ALL COSTS."
To be honest they have never said or inacted the first statement. They only said the latter and if there's money in it the better. They always act to their morals. And they haven't comitted actual crimes. They are not Lawful, neither good nor evil at least as a group.... i mean nott is the embodiment of "ooooh shinyyyy".
@@BattleCookie404 I mean, they commited crimes but only in the intrest of helping people they cared about but crimes arent inherently evil, not even remotely
I totally think of the group as chaotic neutral with jester as the heart and fjord as the moral compass. While caleb is the paranoid, but really brilliant brain. 😂
You may not be able to pick your own family... but eventually you get to pick your own family. Definitely had some unrelated aunts and uncles growing up, and all these friends are lucky to have each other.
Thinking about Kiri's goodbye: Before she met the Mighty Nein, she wasn't able to speak any language. She told them of her name by writing it in Jester's notebook, and was able to speak her name after Jester said it out loud. So her final line, "I am Kiri", she's now able to tell anyone she meets what her own name is.
@@alvinfong1449 She communicates through mimicry and doesn't have a language that anyone in the party can understand. Dunno how up on the dnd lore you are, but Kenku originally couldn't actually speak in common. They had to mimic sounds in order to communicate.
Here I am, saying I’m not gonna have people playing a table top game make me cry … I’ve cried like every couple episodes … and this one was just brutal 😭
Amazing how the cast can make me cry so hard over leaving behind Kiri, but then I look at Sam and he's just looking like the lovechild of McCree and Mario over there during this sad farewell.
Not just at making NPC's, also at creating that perfect moment. Everything from the nighttime fireworks, the looming possibility of a negative outcome for the kids and the aftermath of a difficult fight fell exactly into place. Just a masterpiece
Don't forget that in campaign 1, when they found Gilmore in the rubble of his shop, the party dumped the cleric's highest level spell into him. To make a good NPC, you just need to add a little bit of character to them, and actually have them interact with your PCs.

I love seeing Beau's soft spot for Cleff. You can tell she's thinking, "I wish my dad was like that." At the same time, she's not bullying Rissa for being ashamed of him--they're both in a tight spot and Cleff obviously feels awful for the way his reputation has affected Rissa. I think Beau's attempts to put father and daughter on good terms (though clumsy) is such a great inkling that Beau actually DOES care, even if she pretends not to. It's like when she took care of Caleb after the troll--she has a nurturing side she doesn't like to show, but she takes care of people who need looking after. It's just magical.
Beau is an asshole, but an asshole who would not only fight someone for her friends, would (and does) listen to her friends when they try to help her be less of an asshole, even if it is to mixed results. Such a fun character. But my God, my inner bard or "face" wants to slap her everytime she sasses someone in authority whose help they need.
This whole arc of their travels while on the job for the Gentleman is really where the Nein went from being a dysfunctional crew of criminal miscreants to pretty tight-knit adventurers and I really love it. You can really feel the bonds forming as they go on
I also like how Matt had Ashley play through the kidnapping at the end even though they both knew Yasha couldn't win without causing problems for a bit
@@caseybaker7935 It's really good from a story telling perspective because the characters need to have agency in their story. They don't need to win every fight but they do need to have the ability to try (hence why one of my favorite quotes from CR is Matt's "You can certainly try"). It's also good for the players and GM because it really sucks if the player doesn't get to control their character during play (without talking to their GM first at least). It's always very clear that Matt and Ashley have a plan thought out for Yasha's absences in the story, and it's a sign of his excellent GMing that he gives every opportunity to his players to let them play it out.
@@kl-1447 - They only sort of tried in ways that were doomed to fail and lead to the narrative outcome they knew they needed. If not for that, they could have done several things differently: * As soon as they notice the Silence effect, run for the others and shake them awake, or yell once out of the silence bubble. Probably at least one of the three would succeed at that. Silence is not normal, and a clear sign something is up, probably an ambush. Jester has been doing magic most of her life, and Silence (2nd) is on the Cleric spell list, so she knows it exists as a spell that their enemies can do. * If nobody reacted fast enough to run, Yasha could dispel Silence with Magician's Judge and yell. Silence (2nd) would be automatically dispelled, no roll needed. * After resisting Hold Person, disengage and run for the group instead of just swinging. (She didn't say out loud that she was raging, but here damage rolls was only possible with rage. So she also had advantage on Athletics.) * Activate her Fallen Aasimar ability, Necrotic Shroud (skeletal wings, etc.) Creatures within 10ft that can see you have to make a Cha save or be frightened of her (and thus unable to move closer) until the end of her next turn. The DC is only 8 + proficiency + Cha mod, though, so like DC 9 or something with Yasha's negative Cha. Her Light cantrip has a Verbal component, so Silence did prevent her from using that to wake the party without dispelling it. Jester's Invoke Duplicity can be done while silenced, potentially confusing people trying to tackle her. (Her 1.5 round invisibility usage of Channel Divinity isn't until level 6; they're level 5 at this point.) To me, the clearest sign of Ashley playing into Matt's script was the turn when she just took out her sword and started swinging, rather than running to wake the others. Tactics are not Ashley's best thing, but I *hope* she'd have played that differently if she was actually trying. All that said, I like the way they played it out. That was definitely better than just having Matt narrate that they got silenced and captured. But to me it was clear that they weren't really trying. (Or if they were, they were doing even worse than usual at tactics, by a significantly margin, since they didn't try anything that had a chance to alert the rest of the group.)
@@Peter_Cordes Also notice the other two characters involved were the ones played by people not there (Laura and Travis) so Matt could control their actions and guarantee the outcome he wants.
@@cjtrules1 - Yes, that made it even easier for Matt to get the outcome he planned. If Travis and Laura had also been there, they'd still have been trying to play into what Matt was clearly setting up, probably not trying things that could wake the rest of the group. Matt said he had planned for Laura+Travis to be there for that game; IDK if he simplified his plan any (e.g. by having Jester wake up and join them), or if what we saw was pretty much what would have happened with 3 players. Maybe he'd have given Laura or Travis a tip-off to wake up as the other two were talking on watch, and then rely on their improv skills to follow his lead.
Lol, gotta love Liam's commitment... he's literally staring at a wall to his right just to make it appear he's looking at Marisha xD well played, Caleb. Well played.
This is not only hilarious, but the exact same thing happened to me when I was rewatching this. By the end, I simply could not look at Sam anymore. The mustaches were too diabolical in their power.
Campaign 3 needs an incredible ascending bird-god, it's just Kiri but somehow she managed to break the curse of her race and learned language and became powerful af Edit: or by then she has amassed such an incredible variety of things to say that it's as if she has language anyway
I love being emotionally touched by this group’s actions but holy hell I wasn’t ready for Kiri to go. The party’s reactions just cemented it for me, I was blubbering as soon as Marisha was. The music box especially was brutal.
Doctor: Okay Laura, your contractions are 5 minutes apart and it's looking like everything is coming along nicely. Laura Bailey: Bring me my dice!!! Sam is voicing my character again!!!
In Travis's absence when Ashley very politely stated that she would like to rage, it only felt right to belt out, "OH YEAHHHHH!!!" despite being in my house and about a year late to the party. Great episode, and I'm looking forward to being caught upon CR S2.
It's my personal head cannon that as she said "rage" Travis in the delivery room just turned away for a second, did a smile and fist pump and then turned back.
I really like Mollymauk as a character so far, like his mannerisms and personality make you think he'd be just an utter prick but when it actually comes to interacting with people he's very polite and makes ethical choices.
Today I cried over the farewell between an imaginary bird-girl and an imaginary group of adventurers. Maybe it was good that Laura/Jester wasn't there for it. I don't think she would've been able to contain the feels :(
*Me:* _knows that the farewell scene is coming_ *Also Me:* I'm a big boy now. I swear I won't cry *Matt: **_changes the background music_* *Me: **_furious sobbing_*
I haven’t had my heart moved this much since I saw Dom die in Gears. Damn I both love and hate it when people know how to pull of a scene with the perfect music.
the party really saw four kids scraping a living by pickpocketing, said "not on my watch" and got their parents out of prison. they are basically a goddamn providence for that one specific family
Somehow, by pure magic, so many incredible moments and plot twists occur in episodes where Sam is wearing ridiculous outfits. (Looking at you, Leprechaun Sam)
I want Kiri to meet the next group Bells Hells as a grownup who has learned enough human speech to mimic more coherent phrases, and then have them help her find the Might Nein members as a side mission.
It's not that they can't speak. They have the knowledge but their entire race has a curse put on them that denies them their own speech and flight. If they break the curse they can immediately start speaking like a normal being but until then they are stuck only mimicking speech.
what made me cry was when kiri and molly nodded at each other... and knowing what happens later in the campaign... that this was the last nod between them made me cry...
I was listening to the action, but only glancing at the video every 10 minutes during the construct fight - and every time I looked back, I saw Sam wearing a completely different type of facial hair. coming back to a newer, wackier Sam every few minutes is such a vibe
@@carlotta4thdepends how they go with it! I think the Mighty Nein needs a longer story to tell it's subtleties and all, but that might be because it's the campaign I watched first and because we have been able to see it from it's beginnings... So I'm probably skewed but I personally think the MN needs to have a more "saga" approach to it, like I'd see it be a 10-seasons long animated saga with 20 episodes per season...
I still hope, that one of the players hands his character sheet over to Matt after this campaign, becoming the BBEG of the next Campaign. Caleb seems like the perfect candidate
Despite two members missing and Liam in the Ethereal Plane, this episode is a remarkable turning point for the M9 and how far they went to just help people. I can't imagine Ep1 M9 doing this. Or with this much good will anyway.
You just started the rainfalls on my face again :'o it was indeed very beautiful, I've just sat here watching and crying for a very long time. Beautiful how this show can touch you.
For the longest time I didn’t know why Marisha was marking her arm when counting death saves. I thought it was strange but then that recent interview came out where she revealed that she has a Death Save tattoo. Truly a tattoo with function.
This was actually mentioned like 2-4 episodes back where she goes down and Matt says "Mark it down on your tattoo" Which she does, shows travis, and states I finally have a use for this new tattoo. Travis shakes his head forward and mouths wow thats cool, and Laura shakes her head no at him. It was a cute moment.
First, Matt paints a picture of the family reuniting. So clearly, that I can see the fireworks going off in the distance in my head. And then, Caleb, Beau and Fjord making a case for Kiri, Matt describing her reactions and playing the musicbox. I’m typing this comment through a veil of tears. F*cking art.
This was an amazing episode! Two major thoughts: 1) It is a real shame that Laura wasn't around to say goodbye to Kiri. 2) You guys need to do an April Fools Day episode where everybody has to play someone else's character
Mollymauk doing an impromptu circus perfomance on top of a fence to distract some gnomes while they steal a bucket of tar is officially my favourite Critical Role moment lol
@@novavirus7497 It's because he was originally made as a Sorcerer as a back up for Percy in campaign 1. When he was remade as a Blood Hunter for campaign 2 Taliesin changed the stats but kept the personality.
@@DuIstalri to be fair you can seem charismatic but not be good at it stat wise. think about how many times the charismatic Han Solo failed persuasion and deception checks
@@ShurikenSean That's a good point, Solo is a pretty interesting character study for a number of reasons (I use him as an example when teaching Fate character creation), but the charismatic-yet-awkward thing is something relatively unique.
Gotta admit she been slowly getting better. Last episode standing up for Nott when the town folk started to see she was a goblin and told Nott just to be herself and not worry, while Calab rather her hide.
@@stevecottone2549 Beau doesn't care about what anyone thinks, but that's only as good as far as being an asshole goes. Caleb knows being a goblin isn't the same as being an asshole, and people might kill or imprison her for it. Hiding isn't fair to her but it's absolutely the smartest choice given the circumstances of their world and those in it.
I think this little arc, the Hupperdook, is my favorite of this campaign so far. The roleplaying was fantastic, I loved the fun they had at the festivities and the drinking contest, their search for their money, finding the children and fighting the construct, and the emotional reunion and goodbye to Kiri. There was some good development between the Mighty Nein as well. Matt did a fantastic job roleplaying Rissa and old Tinkertop and setting the scene of this town. The ending was quite satisfying, it's a shame Travis and Laura weren't here.
You know how sometimes you'll walk into a room and forget why? Do you think Matt ever has moments as the NPCs where he forgets what he was doing and does stuff like that to stall while he remembers/improvises?
Ive only recently discovered CR but without a week between episodes you notice a lot of Matts crutches. Every missed attack "goes wide". If i had a dollar for everytime matt mercer has used the phrase "and with that" id be rich. He is a mastermind
The moment that music box kicked in, combined with Marisha's emotions, and Matt's farewell speech on Jester's behalf had me absolutely wrecked... I cried very embarrassing, blubbery tears.
@@laurens.6940 thats gotta happen when 1000s of people are seeing it lol. and the same people tend to almost worship him for his abilities. it might feel like hes not reaching the bar that we've idolized him as. But I hope he still realizes the fact he can do anything is absolutely amazing to me. i wish I had even 10% off his skill, ill settle for 3% even lol
@@yurig014 She does get a little more serious as the campaign goes forward but If you don't like it when people make jokes during what's supposed to be a serious moment, then Critical Role is definitely not for you lmao
When Kaleb is telling Kiri about how she should play with these kids and not them, and how they almost died, and it's so touching I'm gonna cry, and I look down at Sam and realize he has combined his mustaches to make a super-mustache, and wind up crying from øaughter instead from the sheer contrast. Critical Role.
@@snamorta Ironically matt being the voice of macree is why he will no longer say "it's high noon" if you noticed he has found different ways to say it now.
"The Skype isn't the same, is it." "No, it feels like I'm in a bunker under the ocean." And that is BEFORE the pandemic. I feel so incredibly bad for what's coming their way.
Anyone remember Men in Tights, where the prince's mole kept moving positions on his face every different scene? Thats Sams mustache in the second half of this episode.
We really dont get to appreciate how absolutely adorable Ashley is... Just entirely! How she repeats the things she likes, the jokes she tells, the way she plays Yasha... How she reacts and supports the actors acting by acting... And just general uncanny adorableness
Lol, I was thinking the same thing. (slight spoilers I guess?) I've had "Caleb bein Bi/Pan for x hours" videos recommended to me and with Beau's quite obvious crush on Yasha... yeah no. Neither of these fools is straight.
Yasha's face while Matt describes the family reuniting. What a story teller. What. A. Story. Teller. It's an immaginary bird. Damn it. Why am I crying. Just a freaking bird.
You should try to read the story of Ooghie, the Honorary Dwarf. Or listen to someone narrate it. (Personally, I would recommend Den of the Drake for option number 2) That will also just wreck you
It was sad but kind of in a good way- Kiri couldn't keep traveling with the Nein. She'd get hurt, eventually. Must've sucked for Laura since she wasn't there this episode.
I really appreciate Taliesin’s gameplay. He makes incredibly intelligent choices frequently. “What are you most proud of?” Rather than what do you have in this category, etc… is an excellent way to allow Matt to showcase why he brought them there. And shouting “you look terrible mr Schuster!” In the prison knowing he’s not talking to him but awaiting a reaction is just genius.
@Don't Ask Why not? He does often make good suggestions, choices & attacks, as well as very persuasive arguments from what I've seen. Just because his dice screw him over frequently doesn't mean he's not playing intelligently. You really just kinda sound like a hater imo.
Kiri is such a fantastic NPC. We all know Matt is a fantastic DM, but the little things he did with this character really show how great he is. He remembered random lines from each character, remembered how they said them, and for weeks used those lines, with proper accents and tones, and used them to communicate with a character that doesn't have language. And she was adorable and lovable and her goodbye was legitimately emotional. Amazing. What a master storyteller
