Werewolfery 🤣😂 I freaking love that!! And it did take some effort to hunt down these books and compile a list for be to try out. Not a lot of “mainstream” books feature werewolves. I hope they change that soon because I have grown such a newfound appreciation for them!
Loved hearing about these werewolf books! I also really like the werewolf trilogy by Martin Miller: The Curse of the Wolf Girl, Lonely Werewolf Girl, and The Anxiety of Kalix the Werewolf. They are fun and quirky stories, lovable characters, and touch on some heavier issues.
My first werewolf book was twilight as well! I moved more towards the werewolf romance novels after that introduction to werewolves. I purchased Such Sharp Teeth! I’ll have to move it up on my TBR list I loved Ginger Snaps. Thank you for the great reviews. Love your in depth explanation of werewolves. Such a great video! 🐺
Novels about werewolves are a huge blind spot for me, so this was awesome to get so many great title recommendations! Bored Gay Werewolf, especially, seems like one I have to pick up ASAP. If you’re interested in movie werewolves in relation to otherness, I’d recommend: Dog Soldiers, Late Phases, Werewolves Within, The Beast Must Die, and Wer. 🐺 (also, how do we have an emoji for Dracula but not a werewolf?! The horror!)
Firstly, I love your earrings, Lauren! 🔪 🩸 Secondly, I love your deep dive into the lore of the werewolf and your book recommendations. 🐺 My favorite werewolf story is the illustrated novella Cycle of the Werewolf by Stephen King. The movie, Silver Bullet (1985), is based on it which I also love. Kelsi and I did a book/movie livestream on her channel a couple of years ago. I like the Underworld movie franchise and An American Werewolf in London. Terrific video!
I never got into teen wolf because I wasn’t much of an MTV gal growing up but I now what you’re talking about!!! Did you ever get to the movie spin offs?? And did they reboot it recently??
Wowww now that you say it I can 100% see the inspiration to Gingersnaps in Such Sharp Teeth! I HAVE to say Such Sharp Teeth is the ONE Rachel Harrison book I have not loved. I had a few issues with it and like certain directions it took that I wanted it to go the opposite way. It didnt feel like a typical rachel harrison book to me and I think it could have been really great but I would have changed a few things! OHHH I have wanted to read Squad for so long!!!!! This is the PERFECT werewolf rec, I had totally forgotten about this one so thank you for putting it back on my radar! Artie and the Wolf Moon looks INCREDIBLE WOW!!! Went straight to the top of my tbr!! 😅 Thank you so much for doing this video Lauren!!! We do not get enough werewolf themed books and so this was so helpful to get some great recommendations of ones already out that I can start with!!!
I have heard that critique of Such Sharp Teeth before. I totally understand your issues with it! I appreciated how she was able to touch on something feminist books rarely do, which is challenging hyper-individuality as a coping mechanism to trauma. Again, it ended too quickly for her to fully flesh out her characters and the plot so things felt under-developed and forced at the end. The two last graphic novels were such great quick reads that would be perfect any time you’re feeling slumpy. I feel like you’d enjoy them quite a bit!! It honestly took some time to find these books. We need more werewolf stories out on these reading streets!!! 🐺
I really need to read more werewolf stories. Such Sharp Teeth is the only one I have read, but this video gave me so many great recs. This video made me appreciate the werewolf image. It really does give a great outward physical expression of that "otherness" and internal emotional conflicts. I have empire of the wild on my list. I'm sad it didn't work for you! I'll still give it a go eventually. The commentary sounds so good! An American werewolf in London is a great older werewolf movie!! The practical effects are beyond impressive
I’m so glad my explanation about the allegorical uses of the werewolf made sense 😅 because I’m always feeling like I’m talking nonsense but I’m happy you were picking up what I was putting down 👻 And I tried to find an American Werewolf in London streaming online last month and couldn’t. 😭 I have to pick it up from my library. I definitely need to get to that one ASAP!!!
@@happyhauntslibrary stop, you are SO good at explaining things and presenting them in such an organized, well-articulated and easy to follow way!! I love your educational approaches 🤗🫶
Emily!! Thanks so much for watching. Some of these were already on my TBR but most of them I had to hunt down online. I have such a huge appreciation for the werewolf in literature now! 🐺🐺
An excellent, informative video. I really need to read some more werewolf fiction. Such Sharp Teeth has been on my radar for a while. The Wehr Wolf sounds very interesting. There is a Robert McCammon novel, The Wolf's Hour, that I am dying to get my hands on.
Thanks for watching, Cliff. The werewolf can be used for such a wide variety of purposes, it was so cool to seen! And I really do think you’d enjoy Wehr Wolf!
OMG I am so happy that you made this video because I was just thinking about how I don't watch or read much werewolf media! Gay and hilarious werewolves?! I need to read. Adding to the TBR 📃 While reading Such Sharp Teeth, I thought it was just okay but as time passes I am like.... wait this book was actually so good!! 🤣 I need to watch Ginger Snaps! Especially if Such Sharp Teeth feels like a sequel! The only werewolf I am familiar with is Jacob from twilight 🤣🐺
Yes!! I love Ginger Snaps!! Have you seen the sequel? I felt the same about Such Sharp Teeth! The ending felt rushed but I did like that the sister was pregnant and comparing that transformation to herself becoming a werewolf 😅 Ahh! That's great to know about Artie the wolf moon! My library has been promoting it to me! 🤗 This was awesome!! I love a good werewolf story! 🐶
Why aren’t there more books featuring werewolves? I feel like there’s lots of movies about them though! And I haven’t seen the Gingersnaps sequel because I am afraid it’s going to suck as most sequels do 🥲 and that it will tarnish the masterpiece that is Gingersnaps in my head 😅 lol. Can you confirm that it’s good, or atleast decent? Haha
Love your earrings, cute!🔪🔪 I really liked Such Sharp Teeth, I need to read more werewolf books I think that is the most recent one I've read. I read The Fervor by Alma Katsu and really liked that one, haven't had a chance to check out any of her other work yet. Nice selection of wolfy books.😊📚
Thanks so much for the kind words!! And The Fervor includes werewolves?!!? I am so freaking sad I missed that for this project! I would have definitely read it since it’s on my TBR!
Red Moon by Benjamin Percy, I really enjoyed it. I haven't read much on werewolves, so your video was great!! My favorite Werewolf movie is An American Werewolf in London. I also like Jack Nicholson in Wolf. There is the cult classic the Howling, which is based on a book. But that is definitely not a 5 star movie.. 😄 More of need to see just to check off your list.
My intro to werewolves was also twilight! Would wolverine be considered a werewolf? Lol that would also be another one for me Omg the commentary points in Bored Gay Werewolf sound super up my alley. Definitely adding to my tbr! I also really enjoyed such sharp teeth, currently the only Rachel Harrison I have read 🫣 Omg pretty little liars meets teen wolf?! Say less!! Squad sounds amazing. I absolutely love these deep dive videos, you're very insightful and I learn so much!
I would like to share a good werewolf series called High Moor by Graeme Reynolds very good series and doesn't shy away from the violence, the werewolves in this book series are very unique but i won't share what makes them that way.
YESSSS....hahahaha or yeah the Twilight series do NOT have particularly good representation. I always find how interesting it is that a lot of early true crime were called 'Werewolf' killings and how as opposed to a lot of more very problematic MODERN depictions of serial killers in media, Werewolves are actually a bit more apt to certain psychologies of serial killers. Oooh I am so glad to hear about the Bored Gay Werewolf being good! That is awesome to hear. Such sharp teeth has been on my backlist FOREVER....really need to get to it. So many awesome sounding books that I've been meaning to check out for A G E S haha. Oh interesting I would be interested to check out Empire of the Wild to see if it works for me. Graphic Novels are a very rich subgenre so I am excited to see how you feel about it as you continue it. This was a fantastic video and is talking about books on a level I don't see much on youtube.
