I put a banana plant in the ground and shortly afterwards got some cold and wet whether. The plant rotted and fell over. I thought it was gone but a few weeks later it came back and started growing again.

Hahaha I just watched this and went out in my yard and dug out 2 pups and moved them to their own space. I did, however, put my shoes on. Normally I just wear flip fops everywhere. Thanks for the watering tip.

I was just perusing through videos and came across yours and thought I'd drop a comment. I used to have an apartment in Shreveport, LA which is in the northern part of the state. This apartment had a small patio with a couple of spaces not covered in concrete. I decided to give it a tropical flair and put down bananas (Musa paradiscica) and elephant ears, both Alocasia and Colocasia, after I had thoroughtly plowed the native soil. I didn't add anything to the soil or fertilize, but MAN did I get gigantic plants! I trimmed it with lariope and seasonally planted impatiens and begonias for color each year. I took some pictures at the end of the summer when all the plants had peaked and brought the pics to work. My co-workers were raving and wanting me to landscape their yards! Great channel and good luck. Just keep crankinig out interesting videos. 🌱🌴

Thanks for this video. I have like 11 small pups on my potted puerto Rican plantain tree! (Very similar to a banana tree.). They each just have one leaf. I removed two but also broke two. I think the optimal size is to let it grow at least maybe as thick as a quarter so I can pry them out. Even digging with my fingers they are very delicate and the stem is likely to break.

I have a cavendish and a blue ice cream, haven’t gotten any fruit yet. I was watching another video of somebody talking about what he called “water pups” pretty much banana trees that suck up nutrients and almost produce little to no fruit at all. Do you think this is just a variety thing or are not all banana pups created equal? I’ve lost the initial mother plant on both and I am hoping that the tree growing now will actually produce lol.

I have a banana tree in a 5 gallon bucket with a pup coming up. The mother was “pulled out of the ground” last summer or so and is about 4’ tall after being stuck in the utility room last year because it gets pretty cold for a couple days in 7b. If this thing gets 12’ tall and doesn’t fruit this year, do I want to cut it all the way down, or can I cut the top off and be good?

We are in zone 8. We cut them back to about 18” and covered with straw for the winter. Found out later others in my are just cut back below bottom leaf. My question is two of the fastest are full of water but no new growth yet, others are fine. Do we wait to see or dig out?

Good video on how to remove a sucker (pups are baby dogs) from its mother corm. I suspect you already know that this one was left to grow for too long. Also, instead of cutting away the leaves only, you might want to completely cut away the whole stem at 12 inches above ground.

Need help! I separated some banana pups and when replanting the leaf that was growing is not, I had to chop one in half and it started growing again. Am I gonna have to do that with all the pups I separated? They all had a lot of roots.
@TheGardenNerd
@TheGardenNerd 2 месяца назад
I think I understand what you're asking. Just be patient, as it warms up, it should start pushing out new growth. Don't worry about the existing leaf, it will push new ones.

Question! When transplanting a banana tree, do you prune the top off? If so how low do you go? I topped mine off since the leaves die out anyway, and it looks like the top is hard and dry, making it difficult for the new leaf to come out.

Hello GN, Do you know if its wise to remove pups and more mature shoots while one of the shoots is starting to fruit? Working with a neglected plant and would like to see the fruit succeed.
@TheGardenNerd
@TheGardenNerd Год назад
My only concern would be that it may damage the roots of the mature pups. However, I know that the more pups, the more energy is sucked away. I try to only allow 2 to 3 pups at a time to allow the fruiting stalk to have the energy to grow nice, big, healthy bananas.

Once it rots and starts to fall over, not much you can do. Cut it out and wait for a new pup to grow.

I've never understood the concept of cutting off the leaves for roots to grow. The plant needs the leaves to photosynthesize energy, and energy will be needed if root cells are dividing and growing.
@TheGardenNerd
@TheGardenNerd 2 года назад
The whole stalk of the banana tree is actually a leaf. The plant can do photosynthesis still, even if you cut off the top leaves.
@spartanpatriot3163

Because it will put all its energy into trying to keep the leaves alive and not enough into rooting
