My grandmother recently died and me with my mum went to her place (witch we didn't do for some 15 years) and in the abandoned garden she had about 10 good sized piles of single dark (I think they're called landini and blackout ) burgundy, red large flowering lilies, so we decided to dig them up and bring to our place, cause we planned on selling her place, so I started digging, and since the garden was unattended for some 20 years or so, the piles had more than 50 thick stems emerging from the ground and each yielded more than 60 bulbs, so I brought home about 300 lily bulbs, and good sized too. . . I remember she sometime ago had some yellow lilies (I think they were called double fata morgana and dreamland if I'm not mitaken) but those were long gone by now. . . so yeah, not something you would see everyday I guess :D
I have some growing in front of my house. Every year they bloom really nice. They were already here when I moved to this house. They are growing more and more. I want to move them to give them more space but I'm so scared that I will just kill them. I guess I don't have to worry about it right now because I have to wait until fall. Thank you for watching our video and your excellent question. It is possible to divide them in a similar way as the Asiatic lilies. That is after the foliage has died down, probably early fall. You can use the bulbils as well. Take them off the stems and pot them up. Probably dig the pots into the ground to keep from freezing, but that takes a couple of years to get plants big enough to bloom.

Native plants do not readily transplant as they have a symbiosis to the soil mycorrhizae they are growing in. The suggestion is to enjoy them in nature where they are growing naturally.

I have lilies & don't know the type. Some have great scent and last on or off the stem/stalk. I also have some naked ladies. Can I divide these in the spring? I really enjoy them and don't want to kill them. Thank you.

Regarding the 'Naked Ladies', it sounds like they are Belladonna lilies and they can behave in different ways depending on your climate. The best time to divide most lilies or bulbs is when they are in the dormant stage. If there is no leaf growth in the spring or if it has died down from winter growth, this would be the time to divide them. The other option would be after they have gone through the blooming period and the regrowth of leaves and then those leaves have turned yellow. You may lose a season of blooms while the bulbs settle into their new space. +marilyn n. dudek Thank you so much for answering me. The naked ladies grow foliage in the spring which dies off. Then in late summer stalks shoot up, buds appear which result in pink blooms. I need to move them because my husband mows that area and I never get to enjoy them. lol And no he hasn't killed them. I will try to move them in the fall. I will check out the other web sites. If you have the Red Lily Beetle on your lilies the adult stage can be in the soil anywhere near where your lilies are. Dividing and digging will disturb them and you will get some or most of them. However, you should be vigilant come spring and disturb the soil in and around where you have replanted the lilies and if you have planted in a different spot, check the previous spot. If you see any adult red beetles, capture and squash them before they have a chance to lay eggs. Once your lilies are up several inches, check the undersides of the leaves for any egg clusters and remove those. If you plan to store Asiatic lily bulbs over winter it is important to separate the bulbs and remove the soil. If the roots are thick and packed with soil it is best to let them dry out so this soil can be removed. Don't cut the roots flush with the bulb as you could damage the bulb, but if the roots are really thick try to remove some of that growth. Be sure to store in slightly moist peat moss or vermiculite in a well ventilated container such as a cardboard box, in a cool, dark place. Be careful about using the fridge since there tends to be uneven moisture and it could lead to rot. Your main concerns are too much or too little moisture. Check periodically and remove any bulbs that look like they are developing some type of rot. If you see sprouting happening in late winter, early spring and you can't plant outside yet, then plant up in pots and plant outside once conditions are right.
Thank you for your question about dividing lilies. My answer applies to a Zone 3 climate, but most of the information would also apply if you are in a warmer zone. It is best to replant the strong, healthy bulbs in the spot where you want them to grow. Be sure to give them a good watering so that the bulbs are firmly in place, but the soil is not soggy. Provide some protective mulch once the soil starts to freeze. It is fairly late in the season so they may be slow to emerge in the spring, but they should grow. If you are not sure where you want to plant the bulbs, then it's best to plant them in pots and bury the pots in a spare space, just deep enough that the tops of the pots are visible. Also make sure they have been watered and put a mulch over them before the snow falls. In the spring wait to see how many start to grow and carefully plant them in the new spot trying to keep as much of the pot soil in place as possible. Storing the bulbs in a slightly moistened peat moss mix in a cool, dark place does work, but there is always the chance of them getting dried out or mold developing. I prefer to plant them. Thank you for contacting MMGA with your question about lilies. There are different types of lilies so not knowing which type you have, I will provide a general answer to your questions. If the lilies have been in a pot for five years and aren't blooming, they are probably crowded and need to be divided. Also the soil in the pot is probably depleted of nutrients and needs to be replaced. The best time to divide lilies is once the foliage has started to dry which means the bulbs are going into a dormant stage. I advise that you empty the pot (unless it is very large) in which case dig out the lily clump and most of the surrounding soil. Separate the bulbs and save the ones that are strong, firm and healthy looking, no soft spots or rotting roots. Remove the stems as shown on the video. There will probably be a lot of small bulbs and some attached to the sides of the stems. If these are healthy you can save them, but they will need more time to develop into productive bulbs that will bloom. Discard any bulbs that look unhealthy. If you intend to repot in the same pot, be sure to give it a good cleaning and refill with a potting mix that is for containers, but add some compost to provide added nutrients. Add some bone meal or root type fertilizer and replant the bulbs, allowing space ( at least three bulb widths ) between bulbs. Water to settle the soil. If you have a cold season, you should protect the pot from low freezing temperatures until warmer weather begins and the bulbs send up new growth. If you plan to store the bulbs for any length of time, you need to make sure that you remove the stems and all the soil. Allow the bulbs to dry thoroughly in a cool dry place. Check to make sure they are all healthy and then they can be stored in a paper lined container, in a cool dry place. There are some sources that advise putting the bulbs in peat moss into plastic bags and storing in the refrigerator. This is fine for a short period of time, but there is the risk of too much moisture forming and the bulbs rotting, so you would have to check them periodically.

The part that is twisted off is the dry stem. Sometimes secondary roots form there, but would not be viable to produce a new lily plant. You need the bulb or parts of the bulb known as scales to get new lily plants to grow. Good healthy bulbs are the best and quickest way to get new lilies to grow and produce flowers.
Ok, but will that part still flower At least? I had one and the bulb detached while i was pulling it up, however, there are still roots there on the stem.
@@kantabhanderi The dry stem part, even if there are roots, will not grow. It can be compared to the dry stems of perennials that are cut off so that the plant can send up new growth from the roots. The source of new growth in lilies is the bulb which you can replant as long as it's a healthy bulb, that is firm with no soft spots or rot at the bottom where the main feeder roots are. You can divide in the spring. Try to do it as soon as you see any growth emerging. Also if the bulbs aren't too overgrown and can be separated without disturbing the roots too much, you may have more success in having them bloom otherwise you will probably have some bulbs that won't produce blooms as they will have to establish a new root system. Pot up any extras that you have and grow them in pots over summer so you have more just in case and can plant or share next fall.
