Thanks for the neat podcast, Ray. It takes guts to decide to saw apart your first root bound plant.

Hi Ray; I have divided many plants, but not ferns. I see it is the same method I do with elephant ears, peonies, hostas, day Lillies… I use my Dewalt saw because I have weak hands and I have no use of my thumb so gripping is an issue. Some plants I only cut a quarter of the way down and tease them apart. I divide spring and fall in zone 8b PNW We have a lot of rain. But do get droughts in summer. I have divided plants in summer and moved in my garage with a fan and grow lights just to protect from harsh heat. I found that this works to get them rooted in. Last year we put a fence in bordering our acre and my husband said I was a slave driver because I had him digging up all sorts of plants that I divided up. This year I am still moving the plants I divided and put in containers around the fence line to see what looks good and also how it has changed the lighting as we also removed 4 huge cedars. Your garden looks lovely and the pool looks inviting!

Thank you so much! I just did this to my queen fern here in Georgia zone 7b. I tried old pair of wire cutters and it was touch. I will finish the job and find and old saw!

Ray…would you, perchance, be able to do a video addressing traveling with plants? Or, care of indoor and outdoor plants when you’re away? (We have no one to look after ours.) I’ve had to give away so many houseplants & a lot of my outdoors plants whenever we take our trailer and go. I’ve narrowed it down to a jade plant, a small succulent, a mid-size zamioculcus (ZZ plant), and a very small ivy. Your enthusiasm is amazing! Thank you! P.S. Any unusual planters or things used as planters that you’ve seen or might consider using? Just curious.

can you grow plants from the roots that you cut off the bottoms??
@HorticultureGeek
@HorticultureGeek 2 года назад
It is possible as long as enough of the root and a growth point is saved you certainly can give it a try. Plants are fickle sometimes so I don’t want to say 100% yes but I would give it a try.

Enjoyed your video.Dug my saw out and I am about to tackle my Kimberly and Macho ferns. Fingers crossed.😊 I think I will try the Macho in the ground. Have you ever tried not using a pot? Thanks from Tennessee 🌞

I keep my tender ferns in pots so that I can bring them inside for the winter. But I have seen people plant them and then go through the process of digging them up in the winter. I have several hardy ferns planted in the ground and they are beautiful.

Will you take these.plants inside for the winter?? I have the most HUGE plants that I have only had 1 summer that I can't bear to loose!! I'm so thankful I found your channel. Bring in? or winter in pots outside. I'm in ZONE 6A
@HorticultureGeek
@HorticultureGeek Год назад
I bring mine into my garden shed for the winter. It protects against frost/freeze. Ferns like this are not hardy so any freeze will kill them. If your plants are not hardy in your area then yes you should bring them inside.
@debbiechaille6535
@debbiechaille6535 Год назад
So in a dark area or keep in sunlight?? Water regularly or let them go dormant?? I just cut mine up into 4 plants!!! Oh I pray this saves all these starts for spring.

Ray...should I water thru the winter once I bring them in? or go doormant?

I know this is a year old post, so i hope someone responds. Can you do this when planting ferns in the yard?
@HorticultureGeek
@HorticultureGeek Год назад
Absolutely you can. Depending on where you live if you are already hot for the season make sure to keep a close check on the plants for water.

Should root ball be soaked and pulled apart to encourage new growth? You make me nervous sawing on nice tailgate lol
@HorticultureGeek
@HorticultureGeek 2 года назад
You certainly could but I’m this case I was already putting the plant into so much stress I didn’t think root teasing was really needed. And yes after I got them planted as you saw a gave them a good soaking. I don’t do that before hand just because it’s extra messy. 😁🤣
