Getting 2 Plants From 1: Dividing & Planting A Foxtail Fern / Joy Us Garden

I set out in search of 2 Foxtail Ferns to plant at the edge of my pink grapefruit tree but the ones available in the 1 gallon size were on the puny side. The 5 gallon plants were looking much more pleasing to the eye, robust & healthy so I decided to get 1 and split it into 2. This is all about dividing & planting a Foxtail Fern aka Myers Fern.

I love these plants & even though their called Foxtail Ferns or Myers Ferns, they actually aren’t true ferns. As they grow, their twisting, arching fronds become quite sculptural. I had a large 1 growing in my Santa Barbara garden & needed (wanted!) at least 1 in my new garden here in Tucson. Not only are they artsy as can be but tough as nails. In my horticultural book, Foxtail Ferns are as easy as can be to maintain.
Some plants are easy to divide & some aren’t. I just wanted to give you this option in case you can’t find 2 smaller ones that are good looking & healthy. A big bonus: the 5 gallon plant was cheaper than 2 - 1 gallons. And that my friend, leaves more money to buy more plants!

Hello fellow gardeners, I grow mine in full sun in VA (zone 7). Mine has survived the last two winters (several snow storms) in a mulched bed around my mailbox. This last winter was rough, so I thought I had finally lost it. I purchased a replacement and planned on planting it in the same spot yesterday and to my surprise : one green stem about 5 inches tall is peaking out.

This plant is extremely tough! I have one in a container under full sun in California, and I literally didn't water at all for four full months from October to January, and it's still living!!!

Ive always loved this plant since I was a kid but I always thought it was a real fern actually and thanks for all your helpful information . I often propagate it by seed and they look cute when they're very small . I think it's a must in almost every garden . Very hardy .

Thank you for your helpful video I have 2 fox tail ferns in pots they are so large that I didn't want to get a larger pot so in the ground they go..... I hope the owner of this house appreciates the grounds we've worked on. It was all dirt now all green..Watching from Phoenix Arizona

Let Me Share With You What I Do.......I Use The Same Pot Over And Over : ) I take my “Foxy Tail” as I call it : ) when it becomes root bound or just to big for the Pot it’s in...... and I lay it on it’s side, just like you see in the Video. Then I too take a hand Saw and cut (BUT I CUT IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION) of what you saw in the Video. To make it REAL simple..... I cut the plant like I’m cutting of a “Carrot Top”........about 4 inches down away from the green portion. Then take THE SAME POT and fill it 3/4 of the way with fresh potting Soil : ) Drop that “Carrot Top” in the Pot, then place more potting Soil to finish filling up the pot....but leave some room for Watering : ) That’s It : ) 1. You don’t need to purchase a new Pot. 2. You get to keep you’re beautiful plant the same size. 3. With all new potting Soil, you’re plant is getting a new start in life. : ) P.S. I usually cut the “Carrot Top” (dirt) into a square by cutting off just a little bit from the edges. Oh, and you might have a few Tails turn yellow.....No big deal. Just cut them off. If you have any “Grow Power Granules” that’s always nice to sprinkle into the new Soil, before watering. Great Drainage =‘s Lots of drilled out holes in the bottom of any Pot. Enjoy : )

In Chicagoland I did not get mine inside this winter. So I lost it. But kept it going for 5 years by bringing it inside. I would cut it back. and by Spring it was perfect. This year I hope to get it inside sooner.

Omg I should have watched this video before I wrangled mine! I feel so much better knowing I didn't really hurt mine! I waited to long to repot and it was stuck in the pot it was in! If yours survived a sawing then mine is good to go! 😂

I have purchased 6 of the gallon foxtail ferns. I asked someone who was purchasing it if he knows about this plant. He said he bought one last year and it has grown quite a bit and is doing well. Now he wanted to buy and he said he puts it on the balcony of his apartment for the summer and brings it inside in the winter and puts it near the window. I am in NJ so the winters will be colder and I don't know if this plant will survive outside so I was thinking of bringing the pots in for the winter since that is what he did. Any advice as to how you would handle it? I can go both ways since I have access to a small garden front and back of my house but I want the best solution for the plant to thrive.

Can you propagate these from cutlings?
@amylareajohnson2019

Very beneficial to see how to manhandle the plant for dividing. Thanks. But I didn't hear you say how you amended your new soil. You kept calling it soil conditioner. Is that potting mix? Peat? Sand? My Foxtail was potted from the store by me about 3 seasons ago. I have to bring mine indoors in the winter, then move it out when nights are above 50* , usually April thru December here in north central Arkansas. I think I can get 3 plants to repot from this one. So what soil combination should I use in the new pots?

I have a question. A neighbor had cut some of these down & tossed them out as trash. They were thrown on top of a bunch of tubers with roots. I assume these grew from those tubers they dug up?? I don't know how long they'd been on the street but hopefully not too long. I got a bunch of the tubers with roots & they're in a plastic bag right now. Will these ferns grow from these tubers if I plant them? And if so...I'd like to share with a friend but I won't see her for awhile. Will they be ok left in the plastic bag until I can give her some? For how long?? Should they be watered? I really don't know much about them or how to store the tubers. Any info would be great! Thanks!

Absolutely! I bring mine in every winter and have grown new plants from seeds from the 1st plants I purchased. They do great even if they go without water for an extended period of time.

Actually, this is a *foxtail asparagus* even if people call it _fern_ all the time. Asparagi are not closely related to ferns at all.
