DIY £13 ATN tacker for your spinnaker / cruising chute
Heres a video of us using it here - • Learn how to sail a sm...
I really wanted an ATN tacker but at £120 I thought it was a little expensive for what basically looks like a lump of plastic with a bit of webbing, nothing against ATN but I had already seen a DIY one and at £13 (£8 for a fender & £5 for some d-rings and snap clasp) it was hard to resist
our Bavaria boat has no pole so this seemed like an excellent opportunity to make a DIY version to get our spinnaker flying!
So while this could be a tutorial, i do show you exactly how to make one and of course it works for our boat but i have to say if you make one its at your own risk :)
you will need;
Materials
Old ratchet strap or webbing length
1x fender appropriately sized
2x D rings
1x snap shackle
Some thread for sewing
Tools
Sewing machine
Tape measure
Sharp stanley knife
cutting board (or something to cut on)
Marker
Hopefully if the wind plays nicely the next time we are out we shall be flying the spinnaker with the very same tacker I made.
In hindsight i should have cut the fender the opposite way, but it still works fine !
any thoughts suggestions and comments are welcome below
Don't forget to look at our other videos to see it flying in action!

Thanks for sharing your very clever idea. I'm new to all of this. I got an ATN douser, but haven't used it yet. Can you please show how you're using this device? I'm a complete novice here.

I am going to make one with a fender and try one out of kydex and maybe one out of electrical pvc.

Thanks! I put one together with no probs. '81 Catalina 25. Also, thanks for mentioning to cut it width wise.

We’ve been using ours for at least 3 years now, makes getting the spinnaker up pretty easy and you can see it in action on some of our vids, glad you found it helpful though.

Glad you found my photos helpful. I used a manky old fender for the first one to see if it would work and yes it does particularly since the inside is probably clean, smooth and slippery even if the outside needs a good scrub. So we need a video of it working next. Oh I found the sound had to turned right up to hear, not sure if you can adjust it for future videos but would be good if you can.

pete9501 - yeah not my idea at all but just sharing the knowledge! Thanks I’ll have a look at the sound - the wind was doing its usual thing and blowing the wrong way to get the spinnaker up we’re hoping to fly it soon though.

Yes I bulked at the price too, hence a bit of Blue Peter (that should confuse the American readers)

Great idea (and good video) as the ATN Tacker is rather pricey for what you get. Question: Have you consider cutting in half a 6-in x 6-in dia. PVC Schedule 40 Hub Sanitary Tee Fitting instead of using the fender. Since the PVC fitting is hard it would better spread out the load instead of the load concentrated on the strap around the sleeve. It would also seem to slide up and down the furled sail better albeit the small amount needed, instead of the sleeve 'clamping' around the sail and not allowing free movement of the sleeve. I'm going to fabricate both and test which one works best. Thanks for your work!

Have a quick look at our video rigging it here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DGrGyf_EvJo.html it doesn’t clamp onto the foresail and is free moving, easier to see on the video than explain though :)

how easy it will slide up and down over the furled sail? This is the most important property of the original ATN tacker.

Renown31 yeah it works alright we’re still using it over a year later and means we fly our spinnaker more often. Check out our video next week for more detail on the diy tacker in action!

pete9501 - this was filmed on the iPhone 6 nothing special but it’s HD capable and I always find the quality isn’t too bad

Why don't you consider making these and selling for $50 US + postage from the UK, please post link.
