If you want to build your own fiber laser cutter, join our Patreon group: / diyfiberlaser
In part 5, I hook up the cooling system, gas assist system, connect the laser optical cable, and continue building out the frame.
I've been working on building this DIY 1000W fiber laser cutter for the past 6 months and I've finally reached the stage where I've begun successfully making test cuts with the machine. Because I could not find any guides on the internet to help me with the build, I am going to create a series of videos sharing what I've learned during the process. Please understand that I am a novice on the subject, and that fiber lasers can be very dangerous, if you are going to build or use a laser, please do your own research and understand the safety risks!

There is some really creative ideas here. Your solution for an adjustable cutting bed is, simple, effective, cheap and ingenious!

As a person running high power laser in research labs, I am chiming in to advise you to add some anti-fungal compound to your chiller's reservoir : heat plus moist environment is something you do not want to have to clean when microbes and fungus starts inevitably to grow inside there.

Thanks for the tip! I will look into that

100% this. Your water needs to be super clean and have some kind of biocide in it. Otherwise your tank will end up looking like something out of Blue Planet. Don't ask me how I know haha!

Wouldn't that gallon of antifreeze work as the antifungal stuff? Or are you recommending more than what he put in the first go?
@TheRob2D
@TheRob2D Год назад
@@haydenc2742 Antifreeze can be the problem. Our machine had antifreeze in it for shipping but it wasn't flushed out properly on installation. What ended up growing inside our tank looked like something from the Discovery channel. We had to change every filter in the entire system three times. Some even more before we were able to clear the water again. But we'll never clean it 100% I don't think. To this day we have to keep an eye on the system.

If you get leaks in the cooling water, consider fuel injection hose clamps.

Need a dual 1.5mm nozzle, lower head to 0.5mm focus at +2 mm ( focus 1/4 the way into the material) 8mm is going to be tough for 1kw no matter when you head the ringing/pinging sound you are at the right power/pressure with oxygen. Also double pierce with focus above the material.

As Im sure youve already noticed, cutting Aluminum or Glavanized steel with Nitrogen is much more forgiving than cutting Carbon Steel with O2. Steel and O2 is a lot more finicky to get it right. Looking at the cuts, I think the O2 might be a bit high as is the power. In a past role, I ran both a 4kw Mazak CO2 laser and a 4kw Bystronic CO2 Laser.
@TheRob2D

Yup. It's the heat. 3.2kW TRUMPF CO2 here.

I have seen a good cut on one side, and very bad cut on the obisite side if the Laser Beam is off-center, and Yes it looks to me O2 pressure is to high, from my past 10 years experiance cutting with 3.2kW TRUMPF CO2.
@diyfiberlaser
@diyfiberlaser Год назад
Thanks for the feedback guys! My O2 is only 8.7 psi, I guess next time I will try going a little lower and see what happens. I spent some time making sure the laser was centered, but I guess I should take another look at it…it’s odd to me that the good or bad sides are not consistent, it seems to be different in every test.
@STidrvr
@STidrvr Год назад
@@diyfiberlaser one more thing to consider. As you continue to cut in the same area, the steel will heat up which can also cause inconsistent cut results.

I've seen such a finish on 60kw laser cutters that cost more than $100,000 (when cutting 1" steel quickly). This really is laser assisted oxy cutting.

Late to the show, hopefully you’ve found the bug! Run the videa at half speed, and you see some lag on the second half or the run. Also I would suggest making a video with a thermal imaging, to watch heat dispersion

I think you want the aluminum bed supports the other way around. the knife edge is less likely to reflect back up into the laser. also you may cut through them quicker
@diyfiberlaser
@diyfiberlaser Год назад
I was considering that also, but I'm just going to try to never actually cut over them and just have them support the edges of the material...we'll see how that goes

I'm pretty sure you want the electro pneumatical regulator valve as close to the head as you can get it. It reduces the length of hose that needs to be "purged" to the correct pressure every time the assist gas is turned on/off. At least, this is how that valve is installed on of the fiber laser machines I've worked with, but those machines are 5'x10' or bigger so your length of hose might not be that big of a deal Also, I know with the other fiber laser controllers there is a calibration curve you can program at the controller to make sure the regulator is giving you the correct pressure. However, I'm not sure if the Rudia controller has this feature. My experience is with the FSCUT2000/Cypcut environment. You may want to check that the gauge is correctly displaying what you are asking for. The machine looks great, I'm definitely following this build as I've wanted to build my own fiber laser machine and this might just be the way to do it.

Philips Millennium M10 Oxygen Respirator can u use this O2 filtering machine? It has 92% purity oxygen filtering output. It is possible to bottle with a pump. cheaper than buying gas.

I was wondering if it might be possible to retrofit a laser welder and the source. Save some money if I want to do both task.

Technically you should be able to. cnc plasma tables just pull the trigger wires to a 5v relay to trigger the torch. CNC is overall universal. XYZ motions are the same for all. Just needing to turn a different accessory on. Extruder, plasma, welding, router, laser. Its very cool. I run CNC Lathes at work everyday and I love it.

I also built the 1000watt fiber laser with MAX laser source. And exactly same cutting problem and as the automatic gas pressure controller is still missing i also think it might be the problem so you installed it already is it better now it helped or same as before?

I'm still using the manual regulator for oxygen and it seems to be working ok...I've cut out a number parts from 1/4" plate and the edge finish was better compared to the 8mm test cuts.

Wouldn't have been a 1kW Fiber laser with water micro jet? I mean with water instead of Air you could cut thicker material and with more precise and smother (EDM great even with non conductive Hard materials) cuts than that.
