This is a HiVi-Swans DIY 2.2A speaker kit I got off Amazon and looks like a fun project. In this video we start the "glue up" of the cabinets! This is a pretty easy DIY project that uses some woodworking + electronics and soldering. I have no idea what they sound like yet but we will find out!
You can get this kit here:

This is the sound deadening material I used.

I'm glad you routed the front of the speaker, it cuts down on interference from the edge fringes. Looking good and the dampening material is a great idea.

Dynomat used on metal body panels in car's to stop vibration.

Thanks for video! That crossover soldering looks amazing. I can't wait to see how you did that.

I think the foil sound product, I think, is a good idea. I'm not a fan of grills, so I would have filled them too or installed magnets in the holes, so if I wanted to, I could put them on or off. Great Job can't wait to see how these compare to GR Research or other speakers.

Nice work Skunkie. I used the sound deadening on the large front panel of my speakers. They were ply not mdf and the material helped dampen the ringing when you knock on them. I am sure the car hifi builders use car body filler (bondo) on thier mdf boxes. Might be worth skimming with bondo if you have any. Dries quick less shrinkage.

I put Dynamat in both my Klipsch Chorus 2 and LaScalas. Made a tremendous different. I think you made a good decision.

Very nice, curious to know if you think you got a better product for the dollar with the finished product. I'm imagining there's a price point where DIY makes sense whereas if you source all the very best "stuff", do you get diminishing returns. This absolutely looks like a very satisfying project. Thank you for sharing!

Those are coming along nice. I might get a pair myself in the future if you give these a good review. I too have thought about using the same sound deadening material in speakers. I think it will help with resonance. I have thought about using it on the bottom of my turntable plinth also.

My feeling is, it can't hurt. I understand this stuff is designed for metal, but I feel like when the sound wave hits the foil, it has to transfer through the butyl to get to the MDF to then resonate externally.

@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics yep my thoughts too. I dont see it hurting anything.

Dynamat possibly

yeah it's a generic version of Dynamat

Did you consider using timber dowels to fill the grill holes?

That would probably have been a better plan!

Also Skunkie I was wondering if you think it's ok to make a new wire harness for my Quad 2's or should I stick with old one ? I love solid core cable as its reliable and pure in its conductivity but will it make a difference in resistance and overall sound ...the smallest challenges make difference s and you have had so much experience in this field of valves....I'm confused Skunkie can you help me ?
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics

I would use new wire and honestly any micro ohms of difference isn't going to be heard, just use some 18ga solid core wire :)

Fantastic thx Skunkie I will make a new wire harness with solid core...much appreciated thank you

Those look great already 👍 I am ordering a kit from CSS Audio today and will be building their Criton 1TDX with the upgraded crossover and matching center channel. The generic Dynamat is a great idea for deadening any cabinet ringing. Being that I was the Dynamat factory rep for NC & SC for many years I have lot's of experience with other uses than car stereos. Even used a dime sized piece on all of my dog's name/rabies tags to stop the metal clanging sounds. Was originally developed at MIT and literally turns vibration energy into heat. Became huge in the drag racing world where the engines were vibrating the panels apart, way before the car audio guys found out it was so useful. I'm still torn between veneer and painting my new Critons and look forward to see how your finished speakers turn out. Thanks, and good luck with your new project 👏

These are turning out so cool, I think I am gonna have to design and build a matching amp to go with them! Maybe a 6V6 push pull.

Hello Skunkie from Meaford Ontario Canada, I know a lot of secrets to speaker design Skunkie as I was the manager of Oakville Audio during the 90's and 2000's and became pals with master speaker engineer John Achroyd from England, Royd Audio are some of the finest and I sold them during my day and learned the secrets of Johns design ...message me Skunkie and I will share the secret s ...Skunkie as I mentioned to ya I am restoring my Quad 2's amp s and pre amp and I was hoping to ask you if a 300 v rated solid core copper wire is adequate to use in the transformer resistors board as I am not sure how much high voltage levels are used ...help ! Lol

300VAC rated cables are rated at 420VDC and this is if you are laying them directly against other wires, which you should never be doing. In my experience, they should be fine.
