DIY Analog Tape Delay

In this video I show my DIY analog tape delay that I just finished. I built this device from four portable cassette recorders. The first cassette recorder records the audio onto the tape and then the other players play back the sound giving three different repeats. There is a PWM board that controls the speed of the tape and delay length is set by how fast the tape is moving. I also built a 4 channel audio mixer to mix the dry signal with the 3 playback heads. Everything is built into on old art supply case. In total I spent just under $100 to make this device.

Adding that arm to adjust for tape length and tension was a really great idea. Excellent work, as usual.

Mike, this is utterly cool. Your stuff isn't all that much different from my own--but yours is WAY cooler. I'm gonna try and steal as much of this idea as I can as a tribute to you. Thanks for this cool video. Jonathan in Seattle.

@@SISKworks thx! I don't really mind eq'ing the signal but amplification is a must. Feels kinda weird to max out the mic input gain on the mixer so a pre amp is useful. thx!

Probably somewhere around $400ish. It kinda takes a lot of work to get all the mechanics working correctly.
@lafeo0077

hey sorry this might sound like a super dumb question, but a magnetic audio head can we used both ways right? to read from the tape when the input is taking at the terminals and to write when voltage is applied at the terminals right? SECOND, what is the name of the heads you have used?
@SISKworks
@SISKworks 11 месяцев назад
Yeah the play and record heads are the same. They just can’t do both at the same time. Not sure what their names or part numbers are though. I just pulled them from old cassette players.

May I please buy one of these from you pre-built and functional please!? I am a serious inquirer... I've been shopping around with a few other RU-vidrs with similar creations! I understand the beautiful machine that's demo'd in this video is one of a kind BUT I'm sure you could come close to replicating it for the right price! Please consider, thank you!
@SISKworks
@SISKworks Год назад
I actually just started on building a second one and trying to make it better. But trying to do some of it a bit different so that one is still a work in progress. But I’m totally down to build a brand new one for you…for the right price that is. Contact me through www.siskworks.com and maybe we can work something out.

Have you ever tried recording on VHS tape? It adds a warmth not possible with cassette tape.
@SISKworks
@SISKworks Год назад
No, not yet. But funny that you asked because I’ve been thinking about this the past few days. I want to try a put a speed controller on the pinch roller motor to see if I can get variable speed playback. I don’t think it will work for video since that info is recorded on an angle on the tape. But I THINK if I find a non “HiFi” vcr it could work. I wonder if anyone has made VCR tape loops yet? Hmmm.

@SISKworks
@SISKworks 7 месяцев назад
@@E-BikingAdventures well ok then. Haha. 😬 Thanks for watching. And TBH the dual battery packs is one of the things I don’t like about this project. but it really was only (easy) way to have clean sound with a PWM speed controller.
@sirgavalot
@sirgavalot 5 месяцев назад
@@SISKworks I was wondering about the dual supplies. I started having a go at one of these years ago, I wanted to put it in a standard 9v fx pedal configuration and one of the things I got stuck on was the PWM noise. Putting a battery in for the motor control (while powering the rest of the circuitry from a mains psu or whatever) was one option I thought about. I'm going to push the PWM frequency a lot higher than what I have currently (what's yours?), got some ferrite beads to try, maybe isolate the motor and audio circuitry with a transformer somehow. Great outcome with your project though!
@SISKworks
@SISKworks 5 месяцев назад
@@sirgavalot Thank you. I actually don’t know what the frequency of my PWM is. I guess I could check that with my oscilloscope. Just never thought to do that though.
