Making an antler mount for my nephew Johns first deer hunt. I used an old alder wood cabinet door, some copper sheet and a 5 gallon bucket lid for the design template. Nothing terribly fancy, but I hope it will be something that he'll remember the experience with for years to come.
Music is sourced from the RU-vid audio library. Credits are as follows:
Main song: Runaways by Silent Partner

What an easy and elegant way to get a symmetrical shape for the mount. Another great video!

Thanks so much Kaitlyn! I tried several round objects but the bucket lid did the trick:)

Congratulations to your nephew ! Love the mount, and that he'll both still have the brass - and he'll be able to take the antlers down to show off ! Nice work ! It looks awesome !

Never under estimate the valuable influence "uncles" play... I still beam with pride when my adult nephews post pictures of their bass boats and fishing adventures - and I know where those roads started - beside a creek - years ago - when they were shorter than their poles - posing for pictures with bluegill that might as well have been marlin... "Uncles" are wonderful influences... He is sure to remember it for a long time to come !

Uncle Joe must be Jaz's favourite uncle by far. It was a classy project like all of yours and whilst I am not a hunter I can imagine that a young man is very proud of his trophy. Kindest regards from the UK.

Looks great. Only questions I have is, isn't keeping skin on going to cause horrible smells? And start rotting away. Did you treat that some kind of way.

I like that design Joe. I have a few sets of antlers that need to be mounted and I'm planning on doing a video of my process. It's too cold here in Michigan to do any projects outdoors, so It's a good time to work on it.

Awesome job Joe! I like the touch with the brass case and the copper tag behind the antlers. Do you get those tags pre-cut, or do you make them from a piece of copper sheeting? Your friend in Virginia.

That is very kind from you! You're nephew must be happy to keep this very first deer memory like this! I'm wondering if you did special treatment to the deer skin, like tanning the leather to keep it in good condition?

This was a fantastic project. I'd love to see how you did that crown mount. I'd like to crown mount my first ever buck to include his ears but I've not seen anyone do that before. Any experience with this or suggestions? Thank you in advance.
@Salv1974
@Salv1974 6 лет назад
Looks great! How did you prep the crown? Did you have to tan the hide on the crown? I’d like to do one for my son just not sure what to do after I cut the antlers off.

I know this is an older video but what was the piece of wood you used for the ledge? I'd like to make a mount like this but I'm not even sure what words to use to search for to find a piece like that. Looks great!

How do you tan the fur on the antlers?
@funhouse62
@funhouse62 7 лет назад
What were all of the measurements you used? Because this is the only video I've found that comes close to explaining how to make a plaque.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 7 лет назад
Hi FH62.... I didn't have any measurements really as I was just trying to make something that had that traditional shape and was sized right for the antlers. This was a Coues whitetail which is the smallest whitetailed deer in North America so the measurement will likely be too small for most over deer. Anyways, I know that's not exactly what you were looking for but I hope it helps:) joe
