Ever want to display a set of antlers without paying an arm and a leg for taxidermy. In this video I show you how easy it is to create a nice mount on a plaque (sometimes known as a skull cap mount.)
WARNING: Grinding, cutting, or sanding bone produces dust that may be harmful to your health. Please take the necessary precautions to avoid breathing in this dust.

Came back to this video this year to refresh my memory before starting to mount up my dad's rifle season buck. Followed this tutorial last year and my mount turned out great. I used acrylic craft paint to cover the plaster instead of a fabric covering and also made my own keyhole hanger using a washer.

Wow this is the first vid that was more direct abt how to put it together i have made a mount with my boyfriend that is of a wapiti spike and, i cut the plaque and carved out two oak leaves and an acorn on it. We drilled the skull directly onto the plaque and added a teeth hanger to the back which is what i prefer. I bought a whitetail rack off etsy and I’ve been struggling trying to mount them more traditionally and this vid was really direct about how to actually do it and do it well. Thanks so much

That was fantastic. Way to take the extra steps to really finish them off. I like the acorn shaped head piece that is finished off with some braided cordage. My youngest brother likes to do an antler mount with a picture, but he just wraps the skull plate. I shot my first branch antlered buck last year on the first day of the rifle season in West Virginia. A 17 in wide 6 point with a broken brow and tip on the opposite G2. I ended up doing a Euro mount on two sliced logs 🪵 that had a dark stained WV, 2020 date and picture frame 🖼. I am pretty happy with it. I would share it with you but I didn’t find you on Instagram.

Great ideas. I mount mine in a similar fashion, except I don't use plaster of paris and the small piece of plywood. I also have a place for the picture of the hunt and a brass plaque with the date on it. And I have now glued the empty shell casing engraved to the mount. I have a few new mounts to work on over the winter, so maybe I can go over that in more detail. Not sure when those videos will be done. I just add water till its a consistency that seems good to work. Personally I try to err on the side of too wet rather than to dry. It sets up quickly and if its too dry it will be hard to work before you get it all where you want it. I try to make one or two batches that fill in the bulk of the space, then do a final batch thats nice and creamy to smooth on and get it really nice. I like to use something flat like the back side of a butter knife. I also find that getting my fingers wet and rubbing the surface can smooth out the imperfections. You can also sand the surface once it is fully cured.

Great video!!! Have you ever tried to mount several sets to the same board? My wife got her third buck this year and I was thinking of mounting all 3 to a barn board or a piece of live edge... Do you have any advice??
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman 5 лет назад
No, I have never tried doing that but I have thought about it. I’m too impatient to store up several bucks to do it that way. If I was going to do it I would probably use the exact same method of screwing them to the thin plywood, plastering them and covering them before attaching them to the barn wood. Then space them and screw then to the barn wood by what looks good. Personally I would use a leather covering and a twine or fibrous rope to finish off the edges. If you could find a piece of barbed wire and use that as on accent down the board snaking between your mounts I think it would just complete the whole thing. Just my thoughts...thanks for watching and commenting. If you get a chance, let me know how your completed project turns out.

Euro is easy to do too. Simmer the head scrape & wash the meat away and use multiple HOT rinses and soap and treat it with hydrogen peroxide. Ive done 3 myself and it works fine.if you ever want to whiten it more all you need is more peroxide. It is a great whitener and degreaser

Thanks for the video, it help me a lot. I'm wondering how you end the braided loop around the cap? I mean, did you make any special knot to make a nice joint between the start and the end of the braided leather?
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman 3 года назад
Usually we hide the ends behind one of the antler bases and just glue them down. Usually use hot glue to glue one end down which also holds the braid together. We use a small rubber band to hold the other end together while we work the braid around the mount. When you get all the way around, you can take the rubber band off, trim to length and glue the end down.

Usually to get started we just put a rubber band around the ends a few times. To finish it off we use hot glue to hold everything in place and put the ends at the top behind one of the antler bases.

I might clean it with some warm soapy water and an old tooth brush if you are worried. If you boil the antlers with the skull it can discolor your antlers.

How do you do the one with the tacs or nails around the scull holding the leather I love that look. Like the one on the left side in your thumbnail
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman 4 года назад
Thanks for the question. It is a cool look, but I quit doing it that way because it is much harder to accomplish. I'll explain it the best I can, assuming you watched the video. Instead of wrapping the leather around the plaster and backing plywood, you would actually screw that to your plaque first and then cover with leather. It is difficult because using the method I showed in the video, you can pull the staples out of the leather and reposition if needed to get all the wrinkles out of the leather. If you use the tacks, once you have a tack through the leather, you know have a hole. Sure you can keep the tack in the same whole, and just put it into the wood a different spot, but then you have a hard time keeping all of the spacing between tacks the same. If you like the look, then I am not trying to discourage you from doing it, you are just going to need to take your time and be patient. Also you will want to pre-drill the holes for the tacks. If not you will have to pound them in with the hammer, and will end up marking up your tacks. If you pre-drill you can use a soft rubber mallet, or cover your hammer with a piece of leather and then just softly tap them into place. Hope this helps.

Question: You used only plaster to create the mount but others use a mix of plaster and Quik-crete. Have you had any issues with the strength of the mount by using only plaster?
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman 3 года назад
I have had at least one crack once it was fully dried, however I usually sand them after they are dry. Once sanded and covered in leather you cannot see the crack and the mount is certainly not going to fall apart.
