Thanks to Betterhelp for sponsoring today’s Draftsmen episode! You can find a special offer in the show links below.
When you go to art school, they provide you with projects, assignments, deadlines, and a schedule. They provide you with structure. In this episode we talk about how to create structure for yourself when you’re learning from home. Marshall gives his perspective from being a classroom teacher and how it can be applied to online education, while Stan explains how you can’t rely on discipline when forming new habits. Based on psychology, there are more effective ways to form new habits as you’re trying to set up your own structure. Stan also shares how he created projects for himself that got him excited to learn the technical skills.

Well I'm going to try what you mentioned about instant rewards during your practice, but usually it can be pretty motivating to remember the healthy dopamine rush you get after productivity. If you look at practice in terms of productivity, then you could potentially leave satisfied even if you failed at a piece or practice. Yeah, maybe your drawing didn't come out how you hoped but think about the fact that you left your comfort zone and did something productive rather than playing games or watching videos. And at least that time of practice will compile over time and eventually result in progress.

A rigid scheduled. If I don't give myself a specific time frame to do something, I simply will not do it.

I turn the clock off on my PC, that's probably the biggest thing. I'm not tempted to look and think about my next break. I also turn off my phone, and set a timer to block access to my social media after 5 minutes of usage. Eliminating distractions, so getting to work early in the morning not only when there's not a lot of distractions, but also I'm still groggy and don't overthink about starting. I use an alarm clock that forces me to take a picture of my workspace, and if I don't it never turns off, so it'll keep ringing until I'm out of bed, so that's the first problem solved. Also competition really gets me motivated, with others but also with myself.

This podcast is way way more relevant thatn an art podcast is expected to be. You guys do give good life lessons, lessons about how dealing with yourself into the world. I am passing for a moment of re creating my career (and not in art) due to a pandemic related layoff and damm, Marshall insights of how to scruture yourself fit perfectly! I feel less lost that I was yesterday already!

Haha Marshall was feeling that coffee. Glad he was honest about the experience of a good cup. I like coffee too. Sometimes that afternoon cup is SO GOOD. I get my best ideas in the morning, but when it comes to the grind, that second cup is everything.

Our two gents are right on the money - you really need to apply everything you learn, right as you learn - not even after you learn it. You see a video, you better have your brush in your hand, and be making the patterns - you need to apply immediatly, and keep reinforcing those skills. Whenever you make art, you apply what you have learned before, whether this week, last month, last year, twenty, three hundred years ago, you need to apply it right now, and keep digging. This is literally one of the things that made Kim Jung Gi so great - he just was thinking and remembering things to apply, and, subconsciously, he was applying things that had gone subconscious, because he used them so much they got engrained into him.

The best thing I got out of going to art school (Watts Atelier), is the community of students and teachers who are passionate about the same kind of art as I was. When you go in to a class and you’re motivated to do the best drawing you can, in order to impress yourself and everyone else, you perform better, I think. Your brain kicks into a higher gear. That and the connections the teachers had to professionals working in the field. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.

@Draftsmen I am self taught. I've drawn for as long as I can remember. About 2 years ago I realized I had plateaued. Marshall's comment about 'swimming with sharks' had been all I'd known. I've been using online resources to relearn for the aforementioned two years. I even began an attempt at a RU-vid channel 9 months ago. I will be using Honeycutt's list from reddit for supplemental courses now. As I've become more attuned to my own progress; I've noticed some stagnation recently. This series is right on time. Thanks for your suggestions and moral support however comprehensive that may be. I appreciate the work you gentlemen do.🙏🏻

I recently started the Proko program and was looking at the field of materials. My jaw dropped to the floor with how much content was available. I really appreciate this info on creating structure for myself at home. I've been drawing all my life without any formal training (and have followed Stan's channel for some time) I will be combining the information you guys shared with the continued curriculum set forth by the program. Thank you for the information guys. Looking forward to crossing paths with you in the future!

I had a professor who felt very strongly that no artist should exhibit at all for the first ten years after they graduate. Is that idea completely at odds with an artworld that still loves wunderkind art stars? Yes, it is. But on the other hand, I'd hate to be stuck churning out the same silly ideas I had at 22 if I got famous young. I would say, make work that you like, find a way to be sustainable, connect with good people, stay committed, and the rest will come with time.

Hello Stan, Marshall and everyone out there. Thank you for the channel and the content and entertainment you bring. I'm 10 min and 17 seconds into the video. I had to stop it and say that it's ironic that I decided this week to get back to my workout routine, knowing I had to create a habit of it somehow. Then I hear you speaking of creating routine and habits. I'm in school (online) and trying to fit in time for these important parts of my life from working out to working on my own art projects (Mind, Body, Spirit and...um..coffee). The info in this video lines up with that perfectly and it will prove very helpful. Thanks guys!

I really appreciate this video because learning art has always been a challenge. I took community college classes for about 4 years and also had to work jobs that I hated and really struggled to have the amount of time to put into art. When you dont go to an art school you don't necessarily learn things in the right order or you lack certain fundamentals. I started Brainstorm Inland and am finally learning what I wish I could have 10 years ago. Really appreciate the resources you guys put out for the community.

I love that the audio podcast comes out first. Thank you for all you are doing guys! These days I've been circling around the drawing community and your efforts. I feel like I am doing some serious progress here. Basically, I wanted to thank you for giving us access to this insights and advice. I'm 18 years old, 4 months into my art instruction (concept art and illustration oriented) and I am already thinking of making my own RU-vid channel. There's so much to take out from Stan's and Marshall's efforts. Looking forward to be able to afford your resources. In the meantime, I'm taking advantage of Aaron Blaise resources, as well as a couple of others. I'll list them here just in case anyone is interested. I'll do a video of the organization of my education in the future, hopefully. Thank you again! My resources: -Creature Art teacher (now it's on discount, really hard) -Domestika (mostly Spanish, has cc and translation. I personally like Jean frasse instruction) -Coursera Graphic design specialization from CalArts (ikr, there's an option to ask for financial aid) -LovealifeDrawing channel for figure drawing, for improving your vision, which you can practice on: -Croquis cafe (free life drawing resources). I'm thinking of getting a newmasters academy subscription soon. -Of course Proko too, but I assume you already know that they have some free stuff for the month. -Trent Kaniuga has a lot of useful videos in his channel, as well as his Gumroad. I have the toolbox from 2017, great stuff, just starting -Hardy Fowler is also a great resource to stick to, more advanced and rendering stuff. Tried this initially like 6 months ago. Bad idea, you should totally stick to the basics when you are starting. -Sinix design anatomy series is great and is really well explained. I don't really need instruction in the usage of Photoshop (I draw in ps), as I was afraphic design freelancer and video editor (premiere) a couple of years ago, however, there is also a lot of stuff out there that is super useful for this matter. Stay safe :)

So its been a couple of days now since ive lost my motivation for practicing drawing the reason why is because i tried drawing something that has been on my mind and i was planning it for a long time. When i tried drawing its just not coming out as i wanted it to, i did it a couple of times but just gave up after that. I tried just practicing anatomy and i can't even pick up a pecil to draw because i keep procasinating i realised that i lost my motivation and i keep telling myself to practice. when i finally was able to do so it was really hard to focus and of course more procasination. I hope i can somehow regain my motivatiin and passion for drawing before that insident, no matter how hard i try trying to focus and draw i would end up just watching shows all day and i feel so guilty because just last week i would practice for hours. Sorry for my english. Also i havent listen to this podcast yet, you guys posted right in time i hope i can atleast be moee motivated after lisening to this Edit: im glad that people actually responded to my comment i often dont seek help from people because i thought that i can fix my problem myself but not only does this gave me motivation but also realise that thre are community and people out there that helps troubled artist such as myself to give advices and opinions. i'll propably participate in art challanges or comment if i have questions more often thank you everyone who responded to my comment also i lisend to the podcast and it was really helpful because it also answered a couple of my problems.

i run into this problem from time to time. if you draw something and it doesn't come out the way you want, go and *study* what *exactly* it is (usually with *reference* ) that you're running into a roadblock on. and then come back to the drawing. you will clear that roadblock and have fun doing it because you learned a new thing. this helped me a bunch when trying to paint skin tones. also, *give yourself permission* to do what you see your online teachers and role models doing. hope this helps!

There's a study of people who procrastinate. The study found that procrastinators are much more creative than non-procrastinators. Procrastinators find it difficult to commit to a plan because they have lots of ideas and want to keep playing with those ideas. As a sometime procrastinator, I really need deadlines set by others - entering shows, teaching, filling client orders... Without a deadline, I tend to be way less productive. I work long and hard on anything I'm committed to, but don't do things if I don't see a direct benefit from doing them.

I came across this episode exactly when I needed to! I'm a big fan of Proko channel but this is the first time I've ever listened to the Draftsmen. I decided to give it a shot on a night where I'd been feeling particularly frustrated with myself for lots of reasons, including a sense of stagnation in my pursuit of learning to draw. It's uncanny that most of your suggestions I had already curated in my "curriculum" (as I type I literally have a dozen syllabi I've downloaded and even notes on that 'Hidden Brain' podcast episode lolol). I found myself bolstered with a bit of confidence when I finished listening as I realized that despite dropping out of college I'm a decent scholar. I was reminded that, in fact, I've taught myself new skills before (I'm a makeup artist, and astrologer of 8 years); if I keep on this path I've begun to carve in learning to draw, I'll get there. All that to say, even though it was more of a latent effect, thanks for helping me towards a different point view. Looking forward to the next episode :)

At 25.04, Stan mentions exploring other artists. Personally, although i love doing this. (I have Villpu's courses, Sheldon Bornstien, Aaron Blaise, Riven Phoenix, Robert Marzullo and Dave Finch, books by Hamm, Hart, Loomis, Bridgman, Terence Cuneo and others) but, each one has a very different approach to applying gesture, form or structure to thier artwork. This can be confusing for beginner or self taught artists. I find that it helps if a student focuses on one skill (ie comic book art, fine art, illustration) and then follow artists who do that type of work. Then move onto another discipline (Fine art etc). Great show. Great topics.

Brian Tracy mentioned the practice of what the Japanese call "Kaizen". Which basically means incremental change. What it boils down to is doing a little bit every day. In practice, you do something for at least a minute. You give yourself permission to stop after that, but chances are your'e going to keep going. I've been using this for the past year with my work and its improved dramatically. Even when I'm tired, I'm just so wired to practice its automatic at this point.

There is something else that pops up to destroy one's discipline, it's called "Fussing" and it's actually quite a sophisticated behaviour pattern. It was actually recorded by the military. Officers would avoid doing unpleasant tasks by obsessing over minutiae. Have my men got the correct gear etc. It's something I've come across myself at university. It's also much more difficult to deal with than lapsing.

Hi Draftsmen. I'm have a question about mentorship/community. I realized your dynamic with each other fits well and you both compliment each other. How do you maintain your connectivity and friendship? What advice do you give to those who are introverted, don't want to deal with people on a regular basis and/or not confident in their social/talking skills? (I didn't get that enough of that in engineering school and overall experience was just bad, from can't keeping up with classes to comparing my miserable situation to everyone else's success. I'm good now, and I'm transferring to a trade school for drafting).

I just found out that why i wasn't able to make something showy even if I worked really hard on those process classes.... it was because i never took any finished classes and never really saw any project as a finished product. I thought i would complete all the process classes and then start doing stuff i really liked and gave up many time in between (but came back too). But after watching this podcast i realized that there's so much process to learn. I can't just learn processes if I am not making finished products after that and applying what i learnt. I will eventually forget what i learnt.

I saw the title of the video and the first comments and I know I still haven't watched the video but I felt like voicing my furstrations to a comment probably giving a summary to what you guys tackled in the video. I felt like reposting my comment here so you guys could address some of the frustrations (a.k.a: pain) I have regarding teaching myself art. I appreciate what you guys are doing and I hope I learn something out of it that clears the confusion. So here was my reply: Start a project that you have 80-90 percent skill and only 20-30 percent to learn. What if I have almost 100 percent to learn and that sounds too much? I still haven't watched the video, but what pros forget is that sense of feeling over-whelmed when you're trying to learn something alone You aren't just over-whelmed by the amount of knowledge, you are over-whelmed to the point where you don't know where to start. Then, ok, I watch and read a lot and a bit and , have an idea about how art works and pick a point like gesture drawing and.... I am also lost Because the process feels pitless when questions like (For how long should I be doing this? When do I know I'm ready for the next step? Am I doing this right? Am I making mistakes????) start to pop up and you don't have answers And from this point on it feels frustrating instead of fun because you have no sight of the next step This is when you envy those with mentors, because you have at least those who could lead you and point where did you fall so you can fix it and they have an idea about when you are ready for the next step And the road feels like trying to make all the different choices, failing at all of them and only finding ONE that works!!! This sounds so exhausting and so discouraging. It's like wanting to make statues of of silver and gold so you throw yourself in a desert hoping to find gold and silver. There is indeed gold and silver, but it's a desert and you don't have basic knowledge even on tracking ore or extracting it, also you are looking for efficient methods to do it without proper guidance, you are basing your hopes on impersonal books and info that teaches you how....but doesn't teach you how to learn the book itself. Also, you could spend a lifetime digging a hole in the ground and not find any ore You have mastered how to dig a hole, yes, but you haven't found any ore despite the time and frustration spent doing the digging So, it's a discouraging process I'm sorry for the rant 😂😂😂 but I have problems as you can see and I came here having very high hopes to clear all this mess from my thought process And no, saying "do not be discouraged and fail again and again and love the process of failing" doesn't clear confusion, it makes it worse 😂 Because....I have no process to fall in love with in the beginning, I have no idea how to make use of my failing. And that's why I really HATE people who have massive skills in art who whine about not having enough skill and talent to meet the masters, they sound like rich people complaining about money issues and about how hard it is to live Because they have mastered basics to be able to make room for improvement in their lives and I'm LOST trying to learn bare bone featureless basics!!!! I'm sorry for the rant again but...yes....learning anything alone as your own mentor and guide and student isn't fun and I'm desperate to know how to make it fun and a little bit clear.

1. To create discipline - create a reward system for yourself or find a way to make the practice enjoyable for yourself . Identify the friction and ease it out somehow . Don’t make the curriculum super difficult @ first 2. Don’t flood yourself with knowledge. Have moderation, watch something and then do an assignment if you need to. 3. Treat each lesson like art school : lecture, assignment, & figure out how to apply the info (like a personal project) 4. Make lessons fun! Think of it as your own fun art school
@costcobongwater
@costcobongwater 2 года назад
Its funny how they talk very little about how you can actionably create a structure for yourself, and more on the theoretical aspects behind what ought to guide you. Very nice. I feel like the part where Proko went on about working on your own projects could have tied back to removing friction more explicitly since there weren't too many usable art examples presented

i'm in art uni and i'm the kind who does practically everything 1 or 2 days or hours before final evaluation even tho i had months :') i do pull hairs, have mental breakdowns, hate half of it but that's the only way i manage. cuz either i figure out something and do it or i fail the year and that can't happen. my grades vary a lot, mainly on the better side but i never fail. ive gotten a 19/20 on stop motion animation i did and edited in 3 days. i'm doing 12 or 13 illustrations in a few days. i'm drawing in bulk for my drawing evaluation tomorrow and stuff actually looks good. i've learnt to work great this kind of way even if not perfect. i do better than many of my classmates who been working for longer. i suck at doing things when i have months ahead of me. i just let time pass until i have to do it. it gets really stressful. so im learning to deal with stress too. i think i need the pressure, height of consequences i can't stand, and limited time/controlled time. i just wonder how i'll be able to function on a studio for example. i might tell them to give me final deadlines weeks before without me knowing lol again and again and to please let me work with others so i don't get distracted by things outside of work. i wish i could do this the proper way but it's incredibly hard for me and has always been to organize my time, be disciplined, work with consistency and i've been trying for yeaaarrss. but on the other hand i've really honed some skills hahah Also what kind of person were you referring to when you said "it takes a certain kind of person to do it this way"? i think about the promise thing a lot but i really value my word and friends tend to let it go if i don't do my projects, promise or not, so it doesn't really feel like a consequence. i need to try this someday but seriously. it would be... interesting.

Regarding at 26:14 An important point I learnt about capturing gesture is that you can generally portray gesture in any body type. Try to capture the body language of the figure, because a fat, skinny, tall, short person can show the same gesture. (although some gestures work better with different body types).

I'm doing RadioRunners curriculum (I'm really impressed by it). At my rate it will take me 9 years (just finished proko's figure drawing course after working on it off and on for a year because I mixed in fun trends to work on in between lessons.) Radiorunners course is meant to be done in 2 years-- proko's entire figure drawing course is meant to be done in 1 month plus love life drawings assignments. So intense!

I can say also now. About two years later. That it’s very hard to DIY. Especially if you’re a parent. With that online curriculum I got only as far as start of second term. Up to draw a box lessons 4-7. Probably can use both if you’re younger. But you need really damn good discipline to actually do it and not be sucked in. Good luck

This is coming out at the perfect time for me. I'm an art student set to graduate this fall (maybe? things are kinda crazy with school right now so it may be next year) and I want to take advantage of my increased time at home. I'm at a university with a strong fine arts/conceptual art/academia emphasis that does little in the way of teaching technique so I've had to learn how to teach myself (Proko has been great for me over the years). It can be difficult and overwhelming sometimes but I've had a lot of success learning on my own and have grown the most through my own studies, but it has been really hard to keep motivated the last couple months, I'm at an artistic low right now. I need to rethink my self education because what I was doing isn't holding my attention in these times, I'm feeling highly distractable and discouraged as much as I may want to keep working. I think your advice is giving me ideas for better, more enjoyable ways to continue my improvement and I think loving the process, getting creative with it and making sure I don't burn myself out will help a lot. Listening to you has brightened up my world a bit, I needed some fire under my butt to want to get things rolling again and I think, finally, I've got this. I just want to come out of this thing a much better artist and a better person, ready to take on those jobs when we get to that point again. Looking forward to your new episodes, thanks you guys.

What I find really hard since I started learning is that I'm such a beginner and I find that every course expects you to have been drawing (a lot) as a child and thus already have skill. I don't have that 😂 also. I'm way more interested in drawing animals at the moment and not really in humans and all the syllabuses are based around humans. So I keep getting stuck with making my own curriculum 😂 I know I'm late with watching the podcast. But it's been super interesting I absolutely love it!! Definitely been learning a lot just by listening 🥰

Hello guys, I'm listening to your podcast from the early first episode on Google Podcasts. And this is the first time when I decided to go and listen to it on RU-vid. And I like this format :) You mentioned a very important remark for me - just show your work, even when you know that is not perfect. That's exactly what I avoid to do. I know that I have a lot of mistakes in proportions, my gestures look awful and I'm afraid to get the critique. Thanks a lot, I've heard from you. I will work on my side and try to be more open and try to get a critique!

Wow I stumbled across Alex Honeycut's/ u/Radiorunner's self-taught artist curriculum a few weeks ago and have been working through all the lessons and units. Very surprised to see it pop up and be discussed on here! So far been really enjoying having the structure to follow to overcome the constant "what do I draw today" that is so prevalent in trying to self teach.

Interesting podcast guys was quite enjoyable. Yeah, I've really been struggling with the structure side of doing art stuff so this has helped to an extent. Honestly struggling to learn things has been the biggest thing I've been stuck with and rarely feeling like I'm making any progress has been another and the time its taking compared to what I'm getting out of I is another issue I'm stuck with. Not sure how to make it fun and enjoyable either since I find it pretty stressful too. Currently, I'm on a bit of a learning art kick I just hope it lasts this time and that I don't just give up and not draw for several months.

Hey guys, i've taken upon myself to get my education from home and im almost a month in of daily class sessions. One thing that has kept me going is working on a side project using the stuff ive learned everyday after i do my assignments (so im excited everyday to get to the point where i create something new). Also i've been doing some sports early everyday before starting my assignments, that keeps me fresh and energized! One thing im struggling with is building a community of ppl to work with, i live in a small town and during this covid crisis is tought to build new spaces. Could u guys discuss this a bit on the community building episode? Art ed. in covid times Thanks for the podcast as always! marshall u should read audiobooks

This was really useful to me, I have been through the education mill from primary right through to tertiary, in mostly science, engineering.and information technology. On my honours course, I'd totally lost interest in it after eighteen months and I had no interest at all in I.T. Consequently it became a nightmare to maintain any kind of discipline at all, I managed to do enough to pass each time - barely - but it made it a grind and not enjoyable at all. It is the great fear that I have for this course, that it will be so difficult for someone like me, that I'll become dispirited again.
