DIY - BACKUP WATER SUPPLY

I have installed a small municipal backup water system at my home. I made use of a 2000l water tank and a small 0,37 kW pump from JOJO. I have calculated that I want backup for three days x 4 people x 150l per person per day. If anyone install a similar system to this one, you do so at your own risk. I will not be liable for any damage caused by a similar installation.

You forgot to install a non-return valve after the pump to avoid back feeding from the main supply so you are going to fill the tank fron the bottom upwards
@transnamibnel
@transnamibnel 9 месяцев назад
Not true, the pump acts as a one way valve too. Water cannot flow from the outlet side. At least mine is like that
@Hermsl
@Hermsl 8 месяцев назад
Very important to know that, yes.

Why gamble? Put a one way on pump outlet. If the municipal water gets thru the pump and feeds tank from bottom u got a big problem. Depends on pump.
@nikhildeolall3909
@nikhildeolall3909 Год назад
Thanks for the great explanation. It always puzzled me. I always assumed the municipal line would run directly into the tank, and from there the water would be pumped into the house taps.
@transnamibnel
@transnamibnel Год назад
You can do it that way, but then you will use the pump 24/7 even if the municipal pressure is sufficient. My sytem only starts to work when the pressure drops to far or if thre is no pressure at all.
@joelmhlongo9294
@joelmhlongo9294 2 месяца назад
You can do that. Then add a bypass so Incase you don't wanna use the pump

Nice Martin! Where I live the municipal water is not always so nice…. I am using rainwater and just installed a booster pump. However, I will fill the tank with municipal water if the rain is not enough. I also am adding a filtration system to make sure that the water is clean. Our drinking water goes through a dedicated filter already. So far it seems to be working well… I like the way you plumbed your system up, gives me some new ideas! Thanks for sharing.

sorry one last thing. i see you have a kind of white pipe used for the setup. You obviously did some research on what pipes to use. What is that and where can i get some. the supply side is also thicker pipe i guess . thanks

It is called UNIPEX and you can bend it like you want. Save on elbows, etc. You get it in 15mm and 20mm at your local hardware shop.

I have power issues at home with a similar setup in mind, can use a pressure tank? instead of a pump as most of there is no power and u need water in all parts of the house, what do you recommend? or maybe i can get a solar pump though it will bring several complexities
@transnamibnel

I am not an expert on this. This is purely my own work. So I cannot recommend on the use of a pressure tank.

Nice setup but if you have a new geyser under warrantee the geyser company may not honour your warrantee. Your geyser cant relieve itself as the non return valve prevents the PRV from working. I realize this is for emergencies but it would be better practice.How does the little 0.37kw pump perform. I always use much bigger pumps but maybe its overkill and a waste of money.
@transnamibnel
@transnamibnel 2 года назад
There is a PRV at the geyser also and according to the guy that installed my new geyser, this pump's operating pressure is less than the max of the geyser ( 6 bar) This pump is doing very well. If it is in operation, you won't even know it.
@transnamibnel
@transnamibnel Год назад
I forgot to mention also. Regarding the PRV, when their is pressure from the main line, the PRV is working as always as the outlet from the pump act also as a one-way valve.

Hallo. That is normal. If you installed an expensive pump with stainless steel impellers, that would not happen. When we do not have any water interruptions, I switch the pump on for a weekend every 14 days and then I open the tap outside nearest to the pump to get rid of the rust.

Goeie More oom baie dankie vir n baie goeie video.

So as jy dit oopmaak, sal die pomp begin werk. Die belangrikste is dat die stelsel installeer word voordat enig aftappings vir die huis gemaak word maw net na die meter. Dit sal meebring dat water wat vanaf die stelsel kom dan die hele huis en buitekrane sal bedien. Hoop dit help

Thank you for this informative video. Would like to know if it’s compulsory to feed from the pump back into the municipal feed at the PRV OR is it fine to feed back at any mainline ? Same applies to feeding the tank from the top, can we feed from any mainline?
@transnamibnel
@transnamibnel 7 месяцев назад
My system do not feed back to the mains. There is a check valve ( one way valve) that block the water going back to the mains. The system should be installed before any other taps or junctions on the mains. Best place for feed from the mains and back to the mains from the pump, would just after the mains munipal stop valve.

Hallo, yes that is the main purpose of the system. As soon as there is no supply from the main, I only switch on the pump and as soon as you open a tap, the pump starts to pump and when you close the tap, it switch off again.

Good day sir nice informative video. I have a question. I see from your pump to the house is a 15mm pipe.i also installed my water pumps like that .the only difference i did is from the tank to the pump is a 32mm.than the pump burn the fan melted ok.i suspected load shedding. Now the problem is some one try to say its is because of the 15mm pipe on the outlet side of the pump. Can that really cause a pump to burn .i failed to understand. Cause ive installed many pumps with a 15mm out let and they r still working fine.
@transnamibnel
@transnamibnel Год назад
Hallo, I am no expert on this. I have only use the 15mm outlet to the house because off the fact that the delivery to our house is 15mm. I have used the pump now for 2 years without any problems. The water supply is more down than on where I live, so the pump is working for days whenever you open a tap.

This looks like a automatic switch on if the municipal water stops, I am doing a similar installation and concerned about water pressure, the 400kpa prv you use is it a safety component
@transnamibnel
@transnamibnel 2 года назад
The PRV is the one that is installed before the pump on the main line from the municipality. The pressure from the pump is not exeeding 350 kPa. It has an auto switch that sense when there is drop in pressure from the main line when a tap is opened

The 0,37 kW pump is making a whining noise which can be irritating but not as much as it would be to be without water. I have upgraded to a 0.75 kW pump and it almost runs silently.

Question out of curiosity, why are you turning on/off the source water to the tank instead of just installing a float valve inside the tank?
@transnamibnel

There is a floating valve inside the tank and it is working fine. In case of it not working, I have installed manual valve to cut off water feed to the tank.

Hello Martin Excellent design! What is the pressure valve on the municipal supply for? Is the a rating or setting for that
@transnamibnel
@transnamibnel 2 года назад
It was there from the beginning, something to do with the new law. As the pressure from the pump is lower that that of the PRV, I put the supply of the pump after it so that the water does no go through the valve. You would have to install a bigger pump if you connect the supply from the pump before the PRV.

Your inlet pipe to the pump is too small which may cause the pump to heat over time . And reduce the overall life of the pump . The input must always be bigger than the output.
@transnamibnel
@transnamibnel Месяц назад
You clearly looked at the wrong side. The inlet to the pump is at the bottom and is 20mm. The outlet is at the top and it is 15mm like the rest of the house. They system is working 4 years now without any problems. Thanks for your comment anyway

You need one extra non return valve from the pump to the house to avoid a back feed

And why would that be? Where do yo want to put? The system is working for four years now without back feed. Watch the video again and you will see it is correct, but you can put and extra non return valve in in your system. Thanks for the input anycase
