Building and Maintaining a backyard hockey rink in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains
Check out this video documenting the process of building a large backyard rink at 5,285 feet above sea level in the snow covered rocky mountains. We'll walk through the overall process in constructing a rink, setting up boards and a liner, filling the rink, and maintaining it. With this rinks location, there are many feet of snow to clear throughout the season. Learn tips to help maintain your rink no matter how big or small.

Flags and Banners
I've had quite a few viewers ask about representing their favorite NHL/College team or country flag out at the rink next year, and I'd love to hang a flag out there for you! If you'd like to send one, the address is below. Please send us an email so we know to expect one and so we know who it is from so we can say thank you! The team flags / banners are all 28 x 44 inches and double sided. Any similar size would work. The country flags are all 3 feet by 5 feet. I've ordered many of the team flags/banners from Fanatics: fanatics.ncw6.net/gbbDPX - Most of the country flags have come from Amazon.

Hey Pete, I am a Zamboni driver at a rink... when putting down the layers of ice, go over the rink with a vehicle to crack layers and fill in gaps with more water. This will make your ice stronger and less overall maintenance needed. Also, it may take longer but the smaller and more layers the better!

Also if you use boiling water or close to boiling water it makes a glass finish that is hard we use a metal tank with Electric heat element from your local hardware store we fill the tank up in the evening And then the next morning we resurface it pretty much the same way you did in the video

Your videos are so professionally taped and the audio is clear and exciting to listen to. Just saw your sweeper. I bought an Ariens sweeper, used it once and found it wanted to push me to one side when it's angled so traded it in for a 36" snowthrower, but what I also found is that it's better not to sweep, just shovel and the residual snow fills the cracks once you flood with warm water. Finally, I used the plastic board liners then found them to be a pain so haven't used them in 9 years and what a joy. the boards are strong enough for any slapshot and if you use plastic shovels (Garant makes good ones) your plastic liner will be fine.

@@michaelsvenson2456 So he mentioned that there was an "unexpected warm spell", which I have seen other outdoor rink videos mention as well, including natural bodies of water that ice skaters use... So, ice skaters would be ones who would notice that their rinks / ice ponds melted unexpectedly over time, and how long they lasted season over season. Now that global CO2 is approaching 420 ppm in the Atmosphere, and the oceans have the "hottest temperature on record"... all that trapped heat has to go somewhere.

For those heavy snowstorms, you kinda need to remove the snow 3 times a day to keep it clean. Maybe a young lad can drive it when the school is closed due to weather. You could tell him to stay 2-3 feet away from the boards if he's a bit afraid to bump them.

Great to hear from you! If the snow is coming straight down, I'll sometimes go out a few times a day to work on things, but a lot of times we'll have 3-4 days solid of wind and snow, and it is a losing cause to try and stay on top of it because it will blow right back in. Cheers!

Growing up in Wisconsin the fire department would flood the school baseball yard and let it freeze. It made for an OK rink. The problem was the neighborhood dogs would pee on the rink. Each dog would pee in the same spot and over time we would have these 3 feet in diameter yellow mons to skate around.
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 3 года назад
There are so many things that are challenging when maintaining a rink! Bummer about the dog pee. I have a buddy with a pond that geese fly over all the time and his biggest challenge is good poop melting holes in the ice. There is always something!

Here in Finland pretty much every schools yard and half of the other public sports fields become an ice rink in the winter. After snowfall the cities use big tractors to first plow the snow and then they use big sweepers with the tractors to keep the surface clean. The motorized sweeper is definitely a pro move :D

What a wonderful experience you provide for your family and friends. You are doing a fantastic job. When I was a boy / teen, I helped build and maintain an ice surface 100' x 49' in a quonset style building. The water supply was about 150 feet from the rink so we learned to keep the water running while we dragged the hose to the rink to keep it from freezing. (40 degrees below zero makes that happen) Those were great days. I loved your very special time with your dad helping on this rink. Tradition is everything.

Very lucky with the weather - here in Poland we don't really get many freezing days but this year was crazy cold and we ended up skating for a month. It was a tough but really rewarding project. We'd get out around midnight many times to resurface the ice. Dealing with hoses that freeze if you stop the water running was a nightmare :) Looking forward to next season already :) If anyone is interested I posted some photos and stories on my instagram @piotrkol_lawn :D Cheers!

THAT'S A LOT OF WORK ! But, what a great rink ! Using a jar of last year's water was a fantastic touch. 3) This can only be successful when you have friends, lots of friends, lots of 'great' friends ! And endless hours of more work during the season. Made our share of outdoor rinks in the pass (For the kids, of course) Our largest was 40' X 80'. Water supply was a big issue but found someone who gave us water delivery service (5,000 gals. at a time) This was a game changer for us and it was free for three fantastic seasons ! Today we no longer make the rink but this video brings back all those memories. That power sweeper is one great tool ! We never thought of that machine and I can imagine the amount of work that would have saved us. Thanks for one great video ! Stay safe.

Great job man. I also have had a 40x80' Nice Rink for about 10 years up in Northern Ontario. As our kids get into their late teens and early twenties, it gets even more popular. Here's some quick tips, use water trucks so you get water in as quick as possible and you get indoor ice quality, use the tape they sell since you can poke a hole in the liner then tape it up once flat, buy the bigger version of the T pull behind gizmo with the towel on the end from NiceRink and you won't have to deal with uneven ice and use warm water to ensure a homogeneous matrix, don't cut the poly around the rink to high since if the black brackets are exposed to sun, they heat up and melt the ice in those locations, we leave our boards up all year, I just remove and replace the liner each year. Great job man, you'll be glad you made this family investment.

Hehehe watching this from a hot Western Australia where we're having the hottest summer on record. 6 days in a row above 40°c so far and only half way through. This makes me feel like migrating 😂

Heaven on earth. (not counting the maintenance) Great info here. Makes me want to move out of Boston and get some land to build a nice rink!

OMG I live in Winnipeg where hockey is a part of life and maybe at most spend 1/2 week on my rink maintenance. You my friend are a rink ironman. You vs. Mother nature. Insane!

Cheers from sunny Florida! What an amazing looking rink. Definitely jealous that you get to play anytime you want in the winter. Would love to play on a backyard rink sometime soon. Go Lightning!

The amount of maintenance required to keep this rink up after bad weather is just mind boggling for one person. I would have been ready to give up after the 2nd or 3rd snow. That 'over-it' feeling you got when trying to smash your shovel down into the compacted snow is the same feeling I get shoveling my DRIVEWAY!

Us Iroquois helped invent Hoghee or “Hockey” and theres an old method of making a rink using run off from a small river/creek. There are certain spots that naturally flood when the river runs high and we’ll take advantage of those spots. Most times we do the work of “filling” the spot but sometimes Beavers will already have the spots filled by damming parts of the river! 🤘🇨🇦
