Moen 1222 One-Handle PosiTemp Faucet Cartridge Replacement - cartucho de ducha - cartouche de douche
Restore usability to One-Handle faucets that are leaking or not operating properly with the Moen One-Handle PosiTemp Faucet Cartridge Replacement. This replacement cartridge is designed specifically for use with Moen One-Handle PosiTemp tub and shower faucets. It features brass and plastic construction and is designed for easy installation.
Fix your Moen shower valve mixer cartridge. When the shower handle stops letting the water come out, it's time to open it up. It's super simple. There are many handle variations, but if it's Moen, the innards should work the same. Pop off the handle cap, unscrew a couple screws, pull out the clip and use vice grips or cartridge extractor to get the cartridge out. Lube up the new one and put it back in. You can do this! Fix your shower valve, you probably don't have to replace the whole fixture.
The Moen 1222 as the same as the Moen 1222b. The "b" stands for bulk.
The Moen 1222HD is the commercial strength Heavy Duty version. These cartridges are the standard replacement for Moen bath and shower fixtures.
The Moen 1200, 1225, and 1248 cartridges are similar and will come out in a similar manner.

My Moen tub/shower valve was originally installed in 2008 when I remodeled the gust bathroom. Recently, I used the shower to make sure everything worked okay since we had company coming. When on the hot water setting, the pressure dropped off to a trickle. Watched a few videos and found out that the cartridge (1222) needed to be replaced. Picked up a new cartridge at Home Depot for $54. The old cartridge would not come out like shown in this video, even using the plastic notched piece that came with the cartridge. Tried pulling it out using vice grips. Watched a few more videos and found out I needed a cartridge remover tool. I went to Lowes (closer) to pick up a Moen Cartridge Remover Tool. Found the Moen 1222 cartridge a lot cheaper for $38. Damn. The cartridge finally came out with the remover tool. Sanded out the inside of the valve with #320 sandpaper, cleaned it out and installed the new cartridge with no problem.

Don't even think about starting this job without a puller. If the cartridge is stuck due to deposits - you'll have a hell of a time trying to pull it out.

Oh my god are you ever right. First time ever replacing one of these and I cannot get that damn cartridge out no matter how much force I use. I know I am going to be sore tomorrow. Just ordered that cartridge puller tool online and will have to suffer a dripping faucet for a few more days until it arrives from Amazon lol.

WD-40 works wonders...should replace every couple of years to avoid cartridge getting wedged inside shower body due to water deposits .

I actually didn't use it, cartridge came with a plastic cap that helps twist and then just pull off with a plier, now inserting back is taking me awhile as I text 😅

I notice you first had the cartridge with the notched flat on top, then the correct way with the notched flat on the bottom, the correct way. This is important.

Two big points not in this video. First on older cartridges they won’t come out unlesd you loosen them first, use a puller, and pray a lot! Second, the clips don’t go in the bottom holes of the cartridges easily. Sometimes you have to push the new cartridges in about 1/32 of an inch more and slightly bend the bottom of the clip towards the slot. Old copper clips almost never work with new cartridges so buy a new clip just in case.

This video showed me there was no inner handle adapter required on Moen Posi-Temp trim kits that use a handle attached to the center with a phillips head screw. Newer Posi-Temp handles use a allen head (hex head) screw at a 90 degree angle to hold the handle on and therefore require an adapter. Thank you!

At any point do you need to turn the water back on to check for any leaks? i put the new cartridge and pin in. Should i turn the water on after that step to check for leaks or do all the steps and wait to turn back on at the end?

I have a shower that won't mix properly. The valve is clear and functional. There is a thump as you turn from hot to cold and back, and then it just gets hot or cold

Do you know if NOT having a temp limit stop would make it not operate correctly? Seems like it wouldn't hold the valve body in place?

Ok I did that but now I have blend on right off at top and cold on left. Do I need to switch the tab with H C to the bottom?

Easy if it goes accordingly. I'm in the process of doing this now. Second replacement on the same shower. The first time was easy. However, this time a whole other story. The handle stem was welded onto the cartridge stem by corrosion. It took a cutoff wheel to remove the whole handle. Massive pain to remove. This is the reason why Moen changed the design. No more metal on metal contact.

Check those seals. Are they well lubricated? Any tears or abnormalities in the surface? Any dirt or other particles stuck to the cartridge or in the opening? Good luck!!

I am getting low water temp from shower, so I will put new 1222B. To measure the temp of water coming in, do you know how can measure without the 1222B. What is the name of the plumbing assembly that the 1222b goes into, so I can ask home depot also

My moen leaked behind the shower wall, it’s not the pipes that are leaking because the leak stopped when I shut it off, will changing the center part what you just showed stop the leak? Or do I need a plumber to come out? Can you let me know. Thank you in advance!

Here is a simple trick to get the valve out. Take off the shower head and replace with a standard end cap (1/2" black iron cap - less than $2). Take the pin off the cartridge and turn on the main water supply. Wait until the valve is pushed out by water pressure or you can help it out with pliers. (Have someone ready to turn off water supply) Done!

@@robdude1969 I doubt your method I have no evidence like you, but I still doubt it. Imagine all you want, but you are just guessing and it's bad guessing. You could hold the cartridge from moving with your hand, it's not going to shoot out like a bullet - if so the clip that holds it in place under normal operation would break and shoot out like shrapnel. Shop trying to be in charge - it's embarrassing!

For those who don't know this trick, the water pressure pushes the cartridge out. Very simple 2 person job. One person at the water main shutoff, one person at the shower body.

Moen replaces parts for free- DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE CARTRIDGES! Call Moen. Also, when I replaced mine, it was to try and stop a squealing/howling shower. Well, that’s fixed but, according to Moen, the tub faucet leaks now because I used the oil my new cartridge came with to oil it...as the instructions instructed (and every RU-vid video). Moen says they come pre-lubricated. They’re sending me a new one AND emailed me their instructions. Good luck!

I bought 2 of these and one came with the packet of oil, and the other came with a packet of silicone grease. From previous experience, I'd used the silicone grease. Didn't feel right about using the oil, and you just confirmed it. Thank you.

You should contact Moen but most likely it is like mine (about 20 years old house with original Moen cartridge) p/n 1222B. You MUST consider the cartridge pull-out tool before starting this job. The Moen original is about $33 (CAD) but Canadian Tire offers a compatible tool @ $12 (CAD). The cartridge is the posi-temp series but best to ask Moen for a confirmation.
