@JWhiteBBTV - tv.bedbugcentra... - In this episode Jeff will demonstrate how to set up the sugar/yeast carbon dioxide trap for bed bugs. This do-it-yourself bed bug monitor was developed at Rutgers University and has been show to be highly effective at collected and monitoring for bed bugs. The trap uses a 4 gallon container with 150 grams of active dry yeast, 750 grams of sugar and 3 liters of warm water (100o F). Place all 3 ingredients into the container and stir for 5 minutes or until completely dissolved. Place the lid back on top of the container and this mixture should generate about 1.5 human expiration worth of carbon dioxide for at least 8 hours. It is best to be set in a vacant room but will work in rooms that are occupied. The mixture should be placed on top of interception devices such as the textured dog bowls shown in the video. After a night of monitoring, the ingredients of the trap can be disposed of accordingly and the interception devices inspected for the presence of bed bugs. For more information on bed bugs visit BedBug Central at www.bedbugcentral.com or Rutgers University's Extension site at njaes.rutgers.e...

This video is old so you may not read this, but you're a great explainer and this is a great, cut-to-the-chase video with no fluff. Please keep this video and your others up. Thank you for the great presentation.

MEASUREMENTS: I saw a lot of complaints in the comments about Jeff using metric measurements. I too was annoyed by that. But I did some conversions and came up with a very easy system. First, his measurements were by weight - not volume, but I don't have a food scale so trying to do everything in my power to avoid having to go to the store to buy a scale, I wanted to try and figure out a way to do it with the only thing I had - which was a measuring cup. And it turns out it's quiet possible to do! I just looked it up online and there were many sites that give the number of measuring cups necessary to hold a certain amount of weight of various foods, including sugar and yeast. And basically, it comes out like this: 150 grams of yeast is equivalent to 3/4s of a measuring cup 750 grams of sugar is the equivalent of 3.5 measuring cups 3 liters of water is roughly equivalent to 3 quarts I used these exact measurements last night and it worked fine. Oh and for those of you who like me have never seen yeast - much less ever worked with it... I was curious why he was telling us to use a 4 gallon container if we only had to pour 3 quarts of water into it. Well... the reason is - the yeast RISES!!! I've heard the expression "yeast rising" but I've never seen it! It will fill up the whole container, so please don't try to shortcut (like I almost did) and use a smaller container. You will need at least a 4-gallon container!

Conversions are easy. So are 25 unnecessary mouse clicks. Easy yet a waste.

Thank you for your videos. Trying to deal with bed bugs on our own in an apartment complex is difficult. We got them from our neighbors since we started to see mattresses and sofas at the dumpster that looked in great shape. They make everyone sign a BB clause in the lease stating that if you report bed bugs, you are responsible for PCO charges for everyone that gets them in your building so NOBODY is reporting it and is scared to say anything.
@BedBugCentralTV
@BedBugCentralTV 9 лет назад
Cody Darnell that's the slippery slope of trying to pass bed bug fee's off to residents, the first issue is it's tough to prove where the bugs came from and then people stop reporting, I would recommend consulting with an attorney on the matter in regards to the wording in the lease
@tekobari
@tekobari 9 лет назад
Cody Darnell Check your state law or landlord-tenant relations office (sometimes is combined with Fair Housing and Employment office, odd as that sounds. It was true in my case.). They're usually county, not state, offices. If in doubt, call the county agricultural extension and ask them. They're usually in charge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) so they'll know everybody and anybody. Anyway, in my state, it's illegal for your landlord to do what yours is doing, and no matter what the lease says, the landlord has strict liability. In fact, should they decide to evict you as a result of a pest infestation or reporting one, my state gives the tenant serious control against the landlord. The problems are 1. knowing your rights, and 2. being willing to go the full course against the landlord if need be. I'd also look for another place during the intervening months if you're going to attempt to murder your landlord and when the cops get there. Oh, my! Did I say that? Anyway, what I mean is financially trying to murder your landlord. In other words, let's say he/she still gives you notice. You're better off moving than fighting, but if you need more time to get rid of the bugs before you go, do the paperwork necessary to stay an extra month or whatever. You'll get your money back later. DON'T take the bedbugs with you, for god's sake. It's not only stupid for you to bring them along with you to keep tormenting yourself, it's immoral - yeah, I said it - flat-out immoral to do that to anyone else. Then you can sue in small claims court at your leisure. Sue? For what? Getting your security deposit back, for one thing. He/she will try to blame you for the infestation to begin with, then steal your deposit. He might even threaten you with a countersuit to clean the entire apartment building because "you brought them in here." That's like saying it's your fault a fly flew in. They're bugs. They have no preference for tenants or homeowners, opera houses, or museums. They only need somewhere to eat, sleep, and make little bed bugs. Who knows how they got in there? Maybe he/she brought them in while inspecting apartments, for that matter. Don't be cowed. Just keep records, don't argue, don't yell, and - this is most important of all - pay your rent. You'll get it back in court. If you can't pay the last month on one, plus the first one on another, PLUS a new security deposit without getting the old one back (we're talking at least four months' rent here!), then leave the last one and move into the new one in a one-day operation. My judge destroyed my old landlord. Serious punishment. Also, before I left that residence - just to give him a little something to remember me by - I got the housing authority out there to inspect the faulty wiring, furnace, termites, and a lovely set of unsafe stairs. Around 2/3 of the problems I didn't even know about. The reason they were so happy to do this was because all my rent was paid in full. About 95% of the time, the tenant is withholding rent. Trust me on this: if you're paid up, they're happy to help you. Otherwise, they think you're trying to pull a fast one on your landlord, because many tenants try to do that. Scumbags make it bad for the rest of us. Anyway, the city condemned the building. I think a lot of this was due to how the landlord talked to them. He was a hot-head, and began calling one of the inspectors a lot of nasty names, swearing, etc. It made the inspector so angry, he came back out and found MORE stuff to cite that the landlord would have to repair. You might not be so lucky; that is, your landlord might not be an insane, greedy, loudmouth. In that case, you'll just get the one inspection. I got my deposit back, filing fees, law library copying fees, the cost of a book on landlord-tenant law, and double damages, meaning an additional two months rent worth of cash. When he stiffed me on the payment, I notified him by mail that I'd accept payment over six months at 10% interest, interest to be paid first. He paid five days later. I was told by former neighbors that it cost him nearly $20,000 to repair everything he was cited for, AND he had to remove the illegal rental area he'd put in. I didn't know that the house was a single-residency place. He'd tried to turn it into a duplex, but illegally. So not only did he have the construction expensive of illegally turning it into a duplex, he incurred even more expense when it had to change it back into the single-residence house it was to begin with. That, plus the termites, the entire heating system, most of the wiring, etc., and doing much of the work himself and with friends, still cost an extra twenty grand. Now that I've gone through it, I'm proud I did it, but I wouldn't wish court on anyone except him. He deserves it. I'm not making this up - within the year, his wife left him. Apparently she believed his story at the beginning, but when we got into court, and I had all that evidence, she realized he was lying. Then, when he refused to pay, it made her so nervous, the problems they'd already been having were maximized. Finally, a woman sued him for child support! I couldn't ask for anything better than that. His wife left him; he lost thousands, and he refused to pay child support. The mother of the baby took him to court, where HE demanded custody. Best thing ever: his mother was so thrilled to have a grandchild, and adored not only the ex-wife, but the girlfriend, that she testified against him during the support/custody hearing, saying he wasn't fit to have custody. The judge ruled on his back support and gave him supervised visitation only - at his mother's house. The ex got community property stuff, so she's half owner of everything, including apartments. The mother of the baby got her support payments. I got my money. An extra dessert I forgot to mention was that you have to serve papers on someone when you go to court. I knew where he lived, but he was being such a jackass about it, I chose to hire a county sheriff to serve his papers at his workplace, where he was a supervisor. A neighbor had told me how everyone at work despised him. I can only imagine the laughs and delight his co-workers and "underlings" got when that sheriff showed up and served him in front of everyone. Not one bit of this story is made up. In fact, I'm once again proud of myself and hadn't thought of this in years, because I've had such a professional and pleasant landlord all this time. Anyway, I hope this helps. And I hope he dies a penniless, lingering, death.

A couple lil pks of yeast and a cup of sugar in a gal milk jug will make co2 also. A cap with a hole and a ft of plastic tubing stuck in it hanging down into the trap will work great with min spill risk too.

And by the way instead of useing yeast I found that useing vinger and tiny bet of tspoon barking soda creats lot of co2 that's kind I'm useing make the traps question how co2 is coming out can any give answer to that!!?

I plan on trying this while sleeping in an adjacent room. Will that cause bedbugs to spread or will the bugs be more attracted to the CO2? I do not think I have an infestation, but just came back from a trip and would like to try this as a cautionary measure.
@BedBugCentralTV
@BedBugCentralTV 10 лет назад
I don't think sleeping in another room for one or two night will cause the bugs to spread as long as you don't transfer them to the new room yourself (on your clothes, a bag) or they aren't already there, you would probably be more attractive than the CO2 produced by the trap but for one or two nights it probably wouldn't matter

***** I stayed at a hotel about a week and a half ago and had suspicions of bed bugs because of possible fecal matter (about 3 pen-like dots on the mattress). I had the hotel check and they said they found no sign of bed bugs after I stayed, but I was still concerned. I washed my bedding and most clothing, and I have tried this trap for 4 nights now (2 of which I slept in the room, 2 where I slept in the adjacent room). Nothing in this trap, or on the interceptors I installed. How would you suggest I proceed with monitoring the situation?
@thekhamisiproject
@thekhamisiproject 10 лет назад
***** It absolutely does matter - people who do this almost ALWAYS transfer the bugs to another part of the home. It's advisable to handle the issue where you spotted it for maximum containment.

My trap consists of a mid sized metal can, inside I put a plastic water bottle cut down about half, I place the neck inside the bottle. I then boil up water and sugar, pour the mixture into the bottle when about 90f, then sprinkle in yeast. Along the bottom of the can I put the talc. Oh, and cover the bottle first with paper towel. The mixture smells a bit like baking bread and looks like beer. I use this inside a sealed ziplock laundry bag to test suspicious items before using them in the house. Haven't caught anything, assuming because there's nothing to catch since we haven't had any signs of bed bugs. I'd use your method if I think I did.

Yes and technically you're brewing yeast also though there are optimal ways like brewing alcoholic beverages or for bread making or just to make yeast. Technically, more cost effectively you can brew your own yeast from flour and sugar captured from the air too. Search online regarding since there are a few different ways to "make yeast".

Why not use a white colored dish pan instead of the two dog dishes, the typical 18x18 inch size, cover with blue masking tape to give the bugs some traction or make paper/sandpaper ramps up the sides so they can get to the top and hopefully crawl/fall in. Coat the inside vertical 4 walls of the dishpan sides with baby powder to make it slippery so they cannot climb out, add 1/16th inch diatomaceous earth on the bottom of the dish pan. Place liquid ingredients in a gallon size sterile plastic bottle with a hole in the top cap, drape a piece of saran wrap over two thirds of the plastic bottle, add a few drinking straws down the length of the bottle to direct the CO2 into the dish pan, secure the saran wrap and straws with a rubber band.

@BedBugCentralTV
@BedBugCentralTV 8 лет назад
+wolffreak33 what's critical is that the bugs have a textured surface to climb to get into the dog bowl and then fall into a polished well that they can't climb out, the angle to get in is less important than the texture, the trap area should be close to 90 degrees. I don't the container doesn't have to be exactly 4 gallons but I'm unsure of how small it can be and still work as demonstrated

Only good for 8 hrs, but do this instead The size of the bucket and the quantity of sugar and yeast used in the video are unrealistic for a home, or apartment resident. Bed bugs are found in large numbers in bat caves. The CO2 they exhaust is very small compared to the human breath; thus you do not need a 4 gallon pail and a large quantity of sugar and yeast. I recommend using 2 cups sugar mixed with 1 tablespoon of dry active yeast (or the content of a 7-8 gr envelope) in a 2-litres soda bottle with warm water, still well before putting in bottle. Use a small drywall screw and screwdriver to make a hole in the middle of the cap and place a small glad bag over the bottle. The glad bag “guides” the CO2 down the sides of the bottle and into the tray. I use a large recycled lasagna black tray that accommodates two 2-litre soda bottles plus a SenSci trap with the Chemical Lure. IT LASTS 2 WEEKS not 8 hrs like the large pail recommended by Rutgers University. The SenSci Volcano Trap and Lure are optional; the trap still works well with Carbon Dioxide only. You can also sit the bottle son the inverted doggy bowls but be very careful about tipping them over, especially if you have kids, pets, and even your bed sheets may hit the bottle and tip it over; so caution is advised. A good idea is to use flexible tubing to direct the CO2 into the trap while the bottles sit somewhere else, a short distance away and protected from tipping.

What kind of yeast do I get to kill them
@tekobari
@tekobari 9 лет назад
louie stanley There are two types of yeast which normal people use. One is nutritional yeast. You get that at a health food store, body-building gym, whatever. It's dead. The one you want is active, dried yeast - the kind used in baking bread. That's what makes your bread rise. When mixed with water, it begins to grow again, but it has to have something to eat in order to grow. That's what the sugar is for. The water brings it back to life (so to speak) and it eats the sugar. Bubble, bubble. It smells just like bread baking, and if you like that aroma, you won't mind this at all. There are mail order baking supply places where you can buy it in bulk, such as a pound at a time, much more cheaply than those little packages. Amazon sells it, too. Get the cheapest you can find from a reputable seller. You just need them to grow, not bake croissants or anything. As I write this, Amazon has Fleischmann's at $11 for two pounds. That's a huge saving over the packages.

Palmina D'Alessandro heat is a good treatment option but it can be expensive, a "traditional" approach using pesticides and other non-chemical products can also be effective but tends to take a little longer to get rid of every bug depending on the degree of infestation, comparing heat and traditional services is like comparing a luxury car and an economic one, both get you from point A to B it's just a matter of what you can afford and the add-on's you want

This is an update on my review. Too bad its worst, This does not work. I did it as he said to do it but with fewer ingredients with a smaller container, I put this in my friend's room and it did not work. She was sad. Just want to share if you still have bed bugs because this method did not work, for the meanwhile you can buy Off bug repeller draw a barrier around your mattress with it and this will keep the bed bugs from biting you, I came up with it with my friend and it worked she was tired of getting bit. So I did it for her I put the nozzle of the sprayer close to the mattress like the sprayer and the mattress was coming face to face, Press down on the sprayer and draw a barrier around the mattress. She was so happy they did not go past the barrier, Another thing please wear a mask because this stuff "off" bug repellent is strong on fumes, Open a window let the aerosol out of the room. Then come back in the room do this two hours before going to bed to give the room air. Oh, when you spray all you have to do is draw with the spray very close and draw a line with the liquid that comes out of the "off" can Again She was happy. Do this every night but when you draw the line with the sprayer nosel on the mattress draw it fast make sure the line is connected. This can be done until you can find a solution to your problem with bed bugs. When you travel put some off spray in your suitcase and trust me nothing will come near your suitcase in the airport. Stay blessed and happy people, hugs for all.....Just for protection when you take care of your problem make it a habit to spray your bed's legs and headboard with this "off". put bug and roach and ant interceptor with some talc powder in the first entrance for the bugs they will enter your interceptors and breath the talc powder and suffocate and die. I ask; you to do this with all of your beds and your children's beds. and your dressers, if they have legs, do it also if your dressers do not have legs get rid of it and get a new one the same color of your bed so it can still match and get a new dresser with legs long enough for the interceptors won't touch the bottom part of the dresser, And your couch in the living room put some interceptors there as well These are sold in Amazon\, and they come in black and brown and white. you can instead of talc powder you can use "Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade" sold on Amazon as well. put some of the "Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade" in the first part of the interceptor and a small amount around Where the leg stands in the interceptors. Stay Blessed Everyone and be happy. Not P-noid about these suckers, if you have any comment on this please don't hesitate to enter your comment. P.S. forgot to mention try this way with a bottle and follow it to the letter.----------------- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nuKHsqubCm8.html ---------------------- Or you can get some "Sterifab" cost my friend $39 on Amazon you need to wear a breather mask. This drys in 10 minutes and the air in the room give it an hour 1/2 to clear out the air its not a bad smell, but do open the window cause it has chemicals. Look up 'Sterifab on Amazon". My friend did all I typed on here with some of my ideas with the bug repel and the link and the sterifab and the interceptors, read the instruction completely so you know what to do with the sterifab. Again Stay blessed people.

+Kim Haines and Kimayah. I have been using diatomaceous earth as well, but the thing is that the bugs are not attracted to it. On the contrary, they will avoid it if they can go around. I would suggest that the reason you two are still getting bit is because I have found the bugs favorite place is to stay ON the bed rails and small bed crevices where you cant see them so if you're still using the bed and apparently still breathing, they are smelling you and you're easier to reach then the trap. In my case, I quarantined the one bedroom and no one is in there so I am going to try this trap now to get CO2 in the room. I also spread a dusting of Diatomaceous earth (Home depot 9.00) all around the perimeter of the room walls and all around the bed legs. I closely inspected the bed frame first after removing the boxspring and mattress and sealed both of them in matress covers(Walmart 30.00 each)

BB are drawn to CO2 because it's what we exhale when we breathe, the trap has nothing to do with the BB exhaling CO2, So as he said the bucket mimics the exhaling of 1 1/2 people to draw the critters to the trap.

@@skeptic3332 Pretty sure he was referring to the amount of CO2 the bats exhaust not the bedbugs. And while one bat does exhaust less then a human, maybe the difference lies in the large number of bats all exhaling at once rather then 1 human to 1 bat comparison? Something to consider?

Yeast is expensive. What do ya get when you combine baking soda and vinegar? (Hint: CO2). I made a yeast trap, tiny by comparison, in the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket. It made CO2 for many days. Smelled like bread/beer. I have cornered the market on fruit fly collection. If one goes the yeast route, dissolve the sugar by stirring first. You can re-activate (start) the yeast by adding it to some warm water, then dump it in. The sugar feeds the yeast which then gives off CO2. The correct temperature range (in Fahrenheit, as they say: "Numb Nuts") comes with the yeast; of course, there is google. The yeast:water:sugar ratios are not critical at all. Masking tape provides a texture for climbing bugs and is MUCH cheaper than cloth tape. Good luck, and DEATH to the BBs

This clip is one beautiful proof of University arrogance, clueless intellectuals lost inside their illusions of "higher" with minimal to zero practical experience and refusal to consult any "lower" person; especially any with competent housewives. About any competent housewife will fall over laughing at the idiocy of this sample. First the average house room temp is less then the ideal temp for bread yeast to ideally ferment, thus slower ferment equals way less CO2 then claimed - that's just one problem; the one arrogant oversight that will generate all the housewife laughs is the size and major mess danger when the house dog or the curious toddlers or many other sources of oops, dang, knocked this unstable solution of sugar water over onto the carpet - etc etc. Rutgers should feel major ashamed. Get one of your young creative civil engineering students instead to way way better design a simple wide usability model.
