Just for training my horse on the course and not competing I use my 1858 cap and ball revolvers. I can make percussion caps myself very easily and I don’t need shell casings.

@@sureshotranch406, just another thing percussion caps are hard to find now too but they can easily be made out of soda cans. I have a cap die that I use to make caps out of soda cans. I can make around 40 caps from a single soda can.

Your thumbnail shows a crimped cartridge, but I only saw you make one with a felt wad. I imagine an overshot card would work as well. How can you make them crimped so there is nothing but powder in them?

I found wads by the 1000 on Buffalo arms. What thickness do you use? They sell two. Also, you stated you use 1f for CMS, is that standard and have you tried cannon or 1.5 or reenactment powder? Thanks! Awesome video.
@sureshotranch406
@sureshotranch406 Год назад
Great questions! I have used the .060 wads and found that thumbs would get sore and they were a bit tough for the kiddo to get them started so I switched to the .030, which I highly recommend! They hold everything together nice and snug and are much easier and faster to insert. I have also used reenactor powder and I find it to be a great solution for training horses as they produce a lot more smoke and are a bit quieter than true black powder. Reenactor powder seems to be a different formula... more smoke and less energy than black powder. I've never tried cannon powder, but if you do, please report back on how it compares :)

I have a disc cutter in the same diameter as .45 Colt. I buy cork fiber gasket material from the auto parts store and cut my disc wads from that material. It is extremely important to use the cork fiber gaskets because they break up, shred and shatter upon discharge of the gun. It is dangerous to use the gasket material that is not cork fiber material because it does not break up and it becomes a dangerous hi-velocity projectile which can cause serious injury to anyone being struck by one. Extreme caution is recommended when using these !! Cork fiber gasket material is far better and safer than cardboard!

I've been testing 45 colt blanks for busting balloons and I'm having hard time busting balloons past 4 yards even with rice or corn cob cleaning media to function as a shot media over 3F real BP. Are you busting balloons with just a powder load?

I use Reenactor Black Powder or any semi-course black powder. The embers from slower burning black powder (larger grains are better) are still burning for 20-30 feet (I wish I could post a pic in the comments - I took a long exposure of me firing one at night, very impressive star streaks from the embers) It's not penetrating the balloon with force, but with sparks/embers/fire. Hope that helps :)

I wish I could upload a photo to the comments section, but sadly I can't. I once took a long exposure photo at night of my wife firing one into the night sky. Amazing photo! The black powder was still burning at roughly 30 feet away. Most folks argue that it is the embers that hit the target. I've also noticed that if I load more than 30 grain (weight) in powder, it doesn't all burn up. I've shot at Styrofoam ~20' away and found unburnt powder at the base of it (hit it and bounced off). Great question! Thank you :)

That's a great question... if anyone has any advice here, I'd love to know as well
@sureshotranch406

The best answer I can come up with is that the primer hole being drilled out to mearly same size as the primer, allows all the thrust from the primer to pass straight into the powder chamber of the main charge casing. Under normal (non-blank) usage, the recoil force from the expanding gas pushes against the slug during discharge and slams the whole casing back into the firearm's frame. This pressure prevents the primer from backing out (the whole case & primer are seated against the frame), but without that gas pressure smashing it into the frame, the primer's gas treats the casing like a projectile to the maximum amount allowed by the firearms 'head space'
@gijoe508
@gijoe508 3 года назад
Primers back out because there is no recoil to force them back into the primer pocket when you aren’t firing bullets.
@sureshotranch406
@sureshotranch406 3 года назад
That makes perfect sense. I get that there has to be a little headspace to account for cylinder movement and manufacture tolerance variations, but never realized that in the case when a slug is present, the violent recoil keeps the primer seated (or rapidly reseats them) by slamming the primer and casing into the gun frame. Thanks for commenting... very cool.
@michaelpriest6242

That's the first comment on this subject that I have heard that matches science and math. I, too, am glad that you piped up. Thank you for it.

Howdy! Rylee worked on both mine and wife’s competition revolvers (EMF). After her conference with EMF’s company gunsmith, it was determined she had to mill down the “Base Pin Bushing” which fits inside the center of the cylinder to support the cylinder’s “Base Pin.” Milling down the front of the Base Pin Bushing provide a bit more play for the cylinder should the blank’s primer backs out impairing the cylinder from rotating. This would allow the Cowboy Mounted competitor to cock their single action revolver. Since then, both my wife and I had no further issues with our competition revolvers. Primers back out due to the pressure it produces. This potential solution was for EMF Great Western II .45 long colt 3 1/2” single action revolvers. If you own another make, model, or the same, please do not have tunnel vision and assume this is your only solution. It is just a consideration. (This is my legal disclaimer.) Yes, drilling out the primer’s discharge hole for non-Starline brass to prevent it from backing up is a great recommendation. Thank you for that input and producing this informative video.

Thank you for this! I think this is something we have to look into as well anyway. I say that because right now because as a result of this crazy primer shortage we're all suffering, I made some loads with rifle primers (winchester) as my local gun shop said they were basically the same. I was having issues with the cylinder rotating when loaded with these and I assumed they just weren't seated all the way. Nope. They are seated but the small difference in manufacturing for rifle primers vs pistol primers makes these a real struggle to use. I think I'm going to look at the base pin bushing and see if that might help me out... I know the right answer is probably just to stop using rifle primers, but for now, I think we have to take what we can get... in the meantime, these rifle primers still fire okay for home use, but no way would I recommend them for anything else. :) thanks for the note! Is the Rylee you mentioned above a Lawson?

@@sureshotranch406 Yes, the mention individual is a Lawson. I use to reload many years ago when I was an active police officer. Using standard Large Pistol Primers. They work nice, really reliable and my Rugers with Wolf Springs fire them reliably. My Taylors (factory lightened) will fire anything, but if load Large Rifle primers, my Rugers get a little picky and very unreliable. May seem like a no-brainer, but my local gun shop seemed to think rifle primers would work just fine.... with lightened springs, they do not.

Spent 2 weeks looking for black powder, not Pyrodex. Friends found some next state over. Primers now are going for $0.09 each. best I can tell German made imported FFFg black powder runs about $34.00 before taxes. I am beginning to think the best plan for getting black powder is make it yourself. And the cheapest route for primer for black powder cartridges is make them yourself also. Every sport that liberals disagree with are getting priced out of existence. Duck hunting, fishing sport shooting. Too bad they haven't gotten pissed off at badminton.

That would be amazing and I can't wait for them to get back to that here in Sothern California. At the time of this video (back in Feb 2021) the only place I could get primers was on gun broker, and $300-$350 a brick was the going rate. Fast forward to today (Oct 2021), my hometown gun shops (4 of them) are still out of stock... I'm still buying on gun broker, but thankfully they are running around $150 a brick (still 3x normal prices from 2 years ago), but more affordable than they've been. Thanks for commenting.. it's great to know there are still places out there that aren't completely nuts. Happy shooting!

Good video but one quick note about modifying a case to shoot blanks…one should clearly mark the case for blank only because if you get mixed up and load a projectile, disaster will soon follow, hence the star line brass is marked “Blank” on the rim.

@sureshotranch406
@sureshotranch406 2 года назад
Hey Mario, unfortunately the requirements for Cowboy Mounted Shooting are very specific and require the guns to be patented pre-1898, be chambered in .45LC and fire black powder cartridges. It's best to practice with the same equipment you'll be competing with. As far as performance goes the black powder is slower burning that modern blanks and allows them to pop balloon targets as far away as 20'. So while buying a blank gun might be more convenient, they aren't allowed in these competitions so practicing with it would not be ideal. Also, at the time of this response, .22 caliber starter blanks are around .60 each so certainly not any cheaper.
