I was searching for hurricane shitters because I am working on a house that has,... had some of these on the windows. Hurricane Ida recently ripped some off and loosened a few of those that are remaining. I had thought about simply rebuilding the missing ones and tightening up the remaining. However, they aren't really all that storm proof to begin with and the home owner would be calling me back to the house to repair/replace them after the net storm. I'd rather do it right the first time. But as I am writing this, it occurred to me that I could rebuild and replace the ones that are missing and rebuild those that are still there, but instead of using the 1 inch screws and smaller hinges, I could use glue between the boards, and use small bolts/washer/nuts for the fasteners and larger hinges.

Nice Video. I think most of us only have a portable circular saw and not a nice long table to work on. It would be nice to see a DIY with common portable tools too. My windows are surrounded by stone and no place to secure the shutters other than drilling in the stone. A DIY of this arrangement would be helpful.
@Falconlibrary

1. Get the lumber cut to length at the yard; 2. Get a portable work table (can be folded for storage); 3. Masonry bits and self-tapping screws will secure the hinges in the stone.

Great video! Thank you for sharing!! Shutters are fantastic for blocking out the heat in the summer, the cold in the winter, and the light for sleeping! After living in France for over 10 years, and now back in the states, I don't get why we're not using real shutters here... SO thank you very much for this video and your links. How much did this project set you back in terms of material costs?
@TheCraftsmanBlog

The wood was about $80 and the hardware about the same so between $160 and $170 for the whole thing. Not peanuts but cheaper than buying pre-made of this quality.

No window trim is unusual on an old house, but shutters can be mounted anywhere as long as the will then close and block the window appropriately.

Loved the video! A few questions: 1. Isn't the purpose of shutters to allow ventilation ? Do you get your ventilation with your result ? 2. What do you do if you have a wood storm window (or screens) ? In other words, I would imagine you can't have shutters when you have a wood storm in place? Just thinking through these things. Keep up the great work.
@TheCraftsmanBlog
@TheCraftsmanBlog 4 года назад
Thanks so much! To answer your questions, no you won’t get much ventilation with the shutters closed but the purpose it to protect the windows from inclement weather. 2) you do have to remove the screen/storm to close the shutters properly.

@TheCraftsmanBlog
@TheCraftsmanBlog 4 года назад
Happily! You want to leave about 1/16” to 1/8” space around the shutters when closed so that they operate properly. So the calls are based on the opening size of the window minus that space.

They’re not tested for that, but 1/2” plywood is tested to withstand “large middle impact” so I would imagine 3/4” solid wood should do even better as long as the hardware is attached appropriately.

nice job on shutters. but I think you're going to regret using wood filler if your shutters get a lot of Florida sun. As the wood expands and contracts - the filler won't and the paint will crack. Prolly in 3-6 years. also wondered why you didn't glue the boards together?

I have 5 x8 "shutters" on an outdoor pavilion. They are basically garage doors that are hung with shutter hardware instead of strap hinges so I can remove and relocate the doors really quick if I needed to. Just make sure you get hardware that can handle the weight of your shutters. I bet House of Antique Hardware has what you need. Tractor Supply might also have gate hardware that can work for you. I did a cross brace between the two battens to keep the shutter from sagging over time due to the weight. Yours might be okay without, but it wouldn't hurt.

The Craftsman Blog I am certain that you're using materials and techniques on 100 year old shutters that are a bit beyond the scope of your average DIY person looking on RU-vid on how to do it. I could be wrong, of course. I'm not a craftsman. Maybe your restorations can be done by anyone? This guy used what looked to be pine, I assume to hit a price point. What was done here isn't lasting 100 years in New England. I'd be surprised if they still looked decent after five.
