Would have liked a little less cutting 18 fingers to length and a little more of the jig in action.

It took a couple of trial and error runs for me to figure it out completely. The main thing to know is you'll rout the ends of 2 boards (4 ends) with the boards flush with the far right edge of the first finger of the jig. The other 2 boards (4 ends) will be routed with the board edge lined up with the inside (left) edge of the first finger of the jig. It's pretty slick and the easiest way to make box joints without a table saw or table jointer.

I miss a stop on the long board to align the work pieces too... And please, do us a favor and attach a magnet to the key of your drill press before it gets tangled around the drill in the future.

Jamie would this also work with a template bushing on the router? I can't remember if I have a ½", top bearing flush bit or not. Also, this design would work for virtually any size wouldn't it? Thanks for doing this video! HUGE help!!

Yes a template bushing would also work and as for the size any 1/2 inch or smaller should work just fine

Is this working on bushel bearing (like that kinda bushel thing that goes into the router plate and overlaps the size of the router cut bit. Or does this jig work only for bearing staright cut bits? That’s already has bearing on the bit by itself?)

The other side of the jig is used to cut the other end fingers. They are offset from the first side so the joints will mate.

@robertstewart9658
@robertstewart9658 Год назад
That would be used to cut the other end. Because it is offset the fingers will then mate.

I built your exact jig. Thank for tip! The big day came today for routing the panels that make up my speaker boxes. The material is 1/2 birch plywood, which I have heard that a lot of companies use for speaker boxes like this. I am using a very solid Porter Cable fixed base router with brand new 1/2" wide bits, with the bearing at the top of course. The problem is that no matter how slowly I go I still get a lot of tear-out (chipping) which makes a real mess and adds additional work in order to repair. Since this will be covered with Tolex material like most guitar speaker cabinets the patching will be hidden but if I was making a stained box it would all be scrap. Can you suggest something to minimize this or am i just screwed because I am trying to do this with plywood? Disappointing to say the least. I know that people with router tables recommend spiral bits but there does not appear to be a spiral bit with a top bearing. Not sure where to go from here. Any ideas?
@jlistdiy
@jlistdiy 3 года назад
Have you tried using tape on the wood to avoid tear out ?
@moustange

I think I read that spiral-cut router bits result in less tear-out than straight-cut?

3/4” ply is the go to for almost all guitar speaker cabinets. Solid!

You have to back up your plywood with another piece of sacrificial wood, like MDF.

We're some ladies who go to a women's shed and have been making your jig. What we're confused about is how do you stop the router blade cutting into the jig? It looks like you use a specific router bit. Can you let us know what it is. We're learners, so please be patient with us. Thanks in advance.
