Time lapse of over 10 hours of construction
UPDATE - For those asking for a materials list:
All lumber was outdoor pressure treated. Got quotes from lumber yards in area, and ended up being same price as Lowe’s.
6 - 6x6 pieces of lumber 10’ (bought 12’ and cut down for posts)
6 - 2x10 pieces of lumber cut 12’
3 - 1x3 pieces cut 8’
6 - 2x10 pieces cut 10’
22 - 2x6 pieces cut 10’
20 - 2x2 pieces cut 14’
12 - 7” long carriage bolts
100ct - box of 4 1/2” screws
200ct - 2 1/2” nails
6 - concrete anchor brackets (6x6)
1 - box of wedge concrete anchors
Found a plan on @myoutdoorplans.com as a reference and then customized to my size patio and style of pergola.
Not sure exact cost, but with lumber, fasteners, and a couple tools I believe the whole project was around $900. Includes 4 trips to Lowe’s!
Also, live in Ohio (tornado alley) and had a rough winter. 1 year later, no problems with movement - still solid as when I built it.

I wanna first say good job doing it yourself with family. I’m not being a critic but rather asking for myself Question. Did you pour extra concrete (footing) where the posts connect to concrete? Will Or has concrete crack on edges from weight?
@Knightswoop1
@Knightswoop1 5 лет назад
You're right, I think that's only a 4 inch pour slab. I worry its top heavy and it doesn't have any diagonal bracing. Seams very weak. Looks good.
@Craig5150EVH
@Craig5150EVH 5 лет назад
Theres nothing weak about this. Do you have any idea how heavy a 6 x 6 post is...any idea how heavy a 2 x 12 is ? Go to lowes Lift a 6 x 6 post at 8 feet. This thing is built right and built to withstand gail force winds. He lives in Ohio. Brutal winters and highbwinds at times. This is going nowhere.
@josephharmon1202
@josephharmon1202 5 лет назад
I didn’t pour any extra concrete, and yes, it is a 4 inch slab. So far no concrete issues. Also, like some others mentioned, these beams are extremely heavy... I’m not an engineer, but so far everything seems sturdy still.
@Knightswoop1

@Knightswoop1
@Knightswoop1 5 лет назад
@@Craig5150EVH i actually do know. I framed for 7 years built custom homes no less than 7500 sqft and up to 15000 sqft. It was only a suggestion. Salt treated lumber plus the load it distributes from carrying those 2 x 12 or 2 x 10 is a pretty heavy load. When you put so much weight on the edge of concrete, you want to make sure 4" slab thickness is enough. No big deal.
@LewisDennen
@LewisDennen 5 лет назад
Joseph, this is fantastic! Great video and list really appreciate it! I have a question...I'm considering this as well...or a big awning, but I like this better because it's prettier and permanent. However, I don't really have a large slab. I'm not sure what to anchor the beams into...I understand the concept of a hole and cement to keep things sturdy, but wondering if, because of that issue, it's not really a do it myself kind of thing? Or is there a simple way to put the beams on the ground? Part of the structure would be on a solid concreted slab, and part wouldn't...thx!
@josephharmon1202
@josephharmon1202 5 лет назад
Hey Lew! I would strongly suggest the 6x6 posts rather than 4x4... go to Lowe’s and see the difference, much heavier and stronger. For the anchors in slab, I drilled holes using a hammer drill (Harbor Freight $30), then bought the heaviest duty post anchors Lowe’s had. It was my first time, but was easier than I expected. The right tools make a difference. For the beams in ground, dig deep, pour cement to stabilize. Let me know any other Q’s, or if you need pics to help

Pergolas use fat beams so when the sun is at the side and it hits them it will only cast some light. Making it a bit cooler. It's for people who still like to feel the summer sun some but don't want it full power beating down on them.
@PFab
@PFab 4 года назад
It is the same idea behind those mesh hats ladies wear. Or even sitting under a tree. If done right you get less direct light. It is designed to filter direct sunlight but still let it in. Some pergolas I have seen have multiple layers crisscrossing each other. The beams that cross are tall. The layers block out sunlight. Yes you get direct sunlight when it is over you but it's still covered by beams in both directions. And since the sun is always shifting east to west you can design your pergola according to that. It's not designed to completely block out sun light. That's why people choose a pergola vs a roof cover. You can always add a little more coverage and still allow for natural lighting by adding in a mesh fabric. No matter how you build your pergola, you can choose how much light you want in. Imagine putting a completely covered overhang from your home. Now you look outside and it's so dark. The pergola would allow for so much more light to come in without being hit directly with the sun. I hope that explains the purpose.

@dane8122
@dane8122 5 лет назад
@@operationhotshotinc.6887 I understand it's not holding major weight. But it DOES make it weaker by being lag bolted to the sides, as it shifts the majority of the support to the lag bolts rather than the posts. I'm sure it will hold up. My point was, and remains, it is weaker this way.
@josephharmon1202
@josephharmon1202 5 лет назад
Very true Dane! I did some research and for anything carrying a lot of weight (decks) you definitely want to put top pieces resting in grooves. If I were to do it again I would probably take the extra time to do it. It’s still structurally sound and safe, but I understand all weight is resting on bolts.
