I was just telling my husband we could add more Billy shelves to our Billy shelves we already have flanking the fireplace and add trim to make them look like built-ins. Then I found your video!!!! I'll have to show him what you did. So nicely done! 👍
This makes me so happy! It’s one of the main reasons I started my channel- so others can see all my projects and realize they can totally do them too. Good luck with your projects!
AMAZING!!! Finally, after watching a ton of RU-vid videos of tv/fireplace built in's, yours is exactly what I was searching for. Your work is inspiring for a girl like me who's never used a power tool. Fingers crossed 🤞🏽 that I can replicate your wall. Just patiently waiting on the Billy's to be in stock. Thank you again for sharing. I just Subscribed 💖
Yay! I’m so glad my video could help! I think it’s awesome that you’ve never used tools before but you’re totally willing to try. Seriously hope ikea restocks everything soon. Good luck with everything! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this. I'm doing something similar and had read/watched what feels like a million tutorials, but yours is the first that actually *showed* me what I needed to see for it all to click. Subscribed and will check out the rest of your videos!
MOST INCREDIBLE IKEA HACK BUILT IN VIDEO!!! Ever! Loved it! You have crazy awesome DIY skills. Would love to see more detailed instructions for basic beginners like myself. Very inspiring...kudos Kelsey!
Absolutely love this video. We are doing the same thing on our fireplace wall. We only have room for one Billy bookcase on each side. We frameed them in. Then we built a new wall above the fireplace that is even with the bookcases. I did a vertical ship lap on that new wall where the TV will go. Everything is done except for painting and a few trim pieces. I loved what you did!
I like your attitude, you're willing to learn on the go. You are indeed a doer and worth watching. My eyes bugged out a bit when I saw how high you left your saw blade while cutting your trim casing.
Absolutely love this! As a bit of a noob to DIY I find your build inspirational! I personally like a darker aesthetic so I would do like a dark oak style as apposed to the white!
I totally considered that option. But at the time (about 6 months ago) the price of wood was out of control. This was so much less expensive and saved me so much time.
What an awesome project you did. Makes me think I CAN do my craft room. And I won’t have to even move a door. But let’s give credit where credit is due. You keep saying we however, you are the only one I see doing any work! And it is fabulous work! Very inspiring. I love how you go into details
Thank you! One of my favorite things is hearing that my videos make someone feel like they can accomplish their goals in their own spaces. I’m definitely the only one doing all the work but I realized I keep saying “we” as in me and you- the viewer. We’re in this together! 🤣🤣
Omggg you have gained another fan amongst the many others you already have lol. This is exactly how I want my living room. You are definitely talented you motivate me to start doing diy projects. Thanks for sharing your journey with us
Years of DIY under the watchful eye of my professional son taught me to not take short cuts and do it right the first time. This would have made me finish the drywall in the corner too. You are a very handy lady!
Love the entire thing. Exactly what I want in my home. You have great diy skills. I don't know if I can do all that. But, at least I know how now and can certainly direct it to get done. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Beautiful! I have a question about the cords and how you access them to change out the TV. Do you need to remove the fireplace? I couldn't figure out how you reached in there to plug in the fireplace and tv 😁
I really wish I would have included this in the video. I left a hole behind the tv and shiplap. I also cut holes in the side of the cabinets that touched the shiplap. I had wall outlets behind the cabinets that I accessed by cutting additional holes in the back of the cabinets. So the tv cord goes behind the shiplap. It runs down then comes out of the side and plugs in a wall outlet behind the cabinet doors. So you never see any wires. Hope this makes sense.
Hey, you could get a cheap motion sensor light switch for the closet, or else they make something called a door jam switch which installs in the door frame and when the door opens it activates the light (the same way a fridge light works)
Incredible!! That was the word that came to mind when watching you build this & then seeing the reveal.....You did such an amazing job with this project & boy does it change the whole look of the living room! You made it look so easy too! I realize the magic of editing makes everything look MUCH easier than it is but still!! You were so enjoyable to watch...I subscribed ♥
Thanks! I wish I would have included this in the video. The cord for the tv runs behind the shiplap and into the cabinets (I cut a hole in the side of the bookshelf). There are outlets behind the cabinets so I cut a hole in the back of the cabinets to access the outlet. The tv/shiplap area is 96” tall and about 66” wide.
Fast delivery - beautiful , easy to install! My neighbor is ordering one as well! 60 inch is perfect size if you want it to be the center piece of the room!
Hi, Kelsey, Just discovered your channel and immediately subscribed. I had been thinking of doing something like this in my family room. Absolutely amazing. You are one of the very best DIY-ers I have seen on RU-vid. Great job!
For an European like me - it’s unbelievable how she made a hole in the wall 😂😂 My daughter wanted to do the same - we needed the expertise from an structural engineer - and then it needed a lot of time to fix it - because the wall is from concrete wall. Chapeau - good job for sure 👏 Love from Austria/Europe 🇦🇹
There are outlets in the walls behind the cabinets. I cut a hole in the back of the cabinet and used surge protectors. The cords come down behind the tv and fireplace and through the side of the cabinet.
Amazing! I'm attempting something similar in January. On the Ikea website the doors seem to have the handle holes pre-drilled. But your cabinet doors came without holes right? And where did you get the handles? :) Thanks in advance
So the doors are technically pretty-drilled but not all the way through. So from the front, it looks like there is no hole. Here are my cabinet pulls- www.lowes.com/pd/Brainerd-Square-Bar-3-in-Center-to-Center-Matte-Black-Rectangular-Bar-Cabinet-Door-Pull/1002690870?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-hdw-_-ggl-_-LIA_HDW_213_Decorative-Hardware-_-1002690870-_-0-_-0-_-0&ds_rl=1286981&gclid=CjwKCAjwiY6MBhBqEiwARFSCPjpqE2l_nYjgIP3NFZzQCSOEbgZxJgW3B9OAQ4Obu3ip2roO5m4W0hoC1tgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
OMG. That looks great and gives me a couple of ideas for some built-ins that I've been kicking around in my head for a couple of years :). Maybe you didn't video it but, I didn't see you make provisions for the power and cabling for the TV, soundbar, and fire place. Is that a separate video?
Wish I would have included this in the video but it was my first one and I was still learning. There are outlets inside the cabinets. I cut a hole in the back of the cabinets to access them. Then I drilled a hole in the side of the cabinet closest to the fireplace and pulled all the cords through to the outlet.
The Billy bookcases are so great, I just bought a few (Was difficult to get them) and made over my MB closet. I LOVE the built in idea and you did it all by yourself - you are awesome. I really like your channel, just found you 2 weeks ago and am watching your older videos along with your new ones.
Do you believe these shelves will stand the test of time? Are the bookshelves sturdy enough? Looks like a great budget friendly option to build! I’m thinking about doing it myself
We took a closet and reversed it into the kitchen it just so happened that closet was in the perfect place for a pantry. We sold that home and are in another home doing projects.
Looks great! The problem I have in general with TV’s mounted over fireplaces is that they’re always positioned too high, which makes for an uncomfortable viewing angle.
This is amazing! Exactly what I was looking for. My only question is how would you access the wall electrical plugs behind the TV and Fireplace. Is there a hidden door to reach them? Thank you for sharing!!
There are outlets inside the cabinets. I cut a hole in the back of the cabinets to access them. The cords come down behind the fireplace and through the side of the cabinet to plug in.
I love this, but I am one of those who needs more detail. If they are just quick videos, it seems more like a vanity project. Having said that, this looks absolutely awesome, and you should be super proud.
I love what you made and I’m so glad you shared it with the world. We are working on a similar project and I was wondering how you handled the carpet. After the shelves are installed, how do I keep the carpet from shifting? Can I nail the carpet down right in front of the base of the shelves?
Looks amazing! wondering what kind of trim you used for the middle and did you at any point debate between the glass doors? Did you find it easier to build the mantle after?
Wow, so impressive Kelsey! We are going to follow you step by step to get this done for our new house. Kind of nervous cause we are not handy at all lol🤣😂
Thank you! This was my very first RU-vid video and I wish I would have broken it into multiple videos so I could have explained more. Feel free to dm me on Instagram if you have any questions!
I never comment on anything. Hell girl im so doing this after surgery. 1 book shelf either side with a bottom faux fireplace as i live in a very hot state in Australia. thankyou i can do this.
I don’t think I included it in the video(definitely should have) but I screwed through the back panel directly into the wall. Also through the side panels that are touching a wall. Then I used a few screws on the other sides of the shelves to screw the bookshelves together. Hope this makes sense!
Kelsey I am impressed!!! Great job girl! Tell me how did you know what kind of wood and what size you should buy? I have 3 peace’s of ikea here and I would like to transform them into a library ( big bookcase)… please help me with your ideas……
Thank you! When deciding on wood for this project, I knew I wanted to go with primed pine because it’s very smooth and less expensive compared to poplar or oak. As for the size I needed, I measured from the tops of the bookcases to the ceiling because I knew I wanted it to be enclosed.
Great video. Finishing my entertainment wall just like yours. One question the trim pieces/panels you put on the studs, what’s the name and where did you get it from. Thanks!
This looks amazing! Not sure if you answered this previously, but after getting the fireplace and TV mounted how did you get them connected to the power? Did you have an outlet on the original wall and plug things in before screwing things in placing?
There are outlets on either side inside the cabinets (the outlets were already there- I just cut holes in the back of cabinet to access them). The wires run down behind tv and fireplace. I cut holes in the side of cabinets where you can’t see so the wires can come into the cabinet and access the outlet. I really wish I would have included this but this was my first video and I totally forgot. Hope this helps.
Me too- I love teaching people to use tools! I will try to include a little more detail in the tutorials. Then you can try a project and let me know how it goes!
This is insanely impressive. The build quality on this is equal to or greater than that of youtubers with far more views. Keep it up! I love that this is one video, but if I was in your shoes, I'd consider splitting something like this up into 2-3 videos. You could explain a tiny bit more and get a lot of views!
Thank you! And I completely agree. This was my first RU-vid video and I really wish I would have split it up into multiple videos. I’ve learned since then. 🙂
We could not do that whole door think cause our walls are made from brick but this video has definitely inspired me to get a fixer upper like I always wanted
This is awesome! I want to do something like this for my parents. Quick question...did you leave the hole open behind the TV, and if so, why? Also, you covered up where the shelves joined to make it look custom but you forgot to do it at the bottom.
I left the hole open behind the tv just in case we need to access that area for any reason. I didn’t forget to cover the seams at the bottom. I hadn’t installed our new floors yet so I wanted to wait until the new floors were in. They have trim over them now.
