I have heard from several different people that they would like to see a bushcrafted flute how-to video. Here you go. Lonnie takes you step by step through the process of making a Native American style flute while in the woods. Also taught is some brief info on how to tune your new flute. This is a rough type flute constructed in the woods from Nothing but gathered materials and created using what tools many people carry with them on a normal outdoor hike. Enjoy and please be sure and pass this video along to others who may enjoy the instruction and info.
Intro song "Tucson" found in RU-vid Audio Library

Adrian Paez hey Adrian, it was awesome getting to meet you as well. I have heard from different folks that they feel like they know me since they see me in so many videos even though they have never met me personally. I on the other hand, miss out on that since I don't get to see my video viewers. That is why it is so great and awesome when I do get to meet folks in person. I finally get my turn to feel like I know some of the viewers.

+scruffydude1 Thank you. Yes it is a great project for doing in camp. If you are going to be using the cow parsnip, be sure and know how to identify it. There are some look alikes. Some people are very reactive to the compounds in several of these plants (including cow parsnip) especially when they are green and live.

I made this flute out of Fallopia japonica (aka Japanese Knotweed. Which is an invasive species here growing everywhere some parts of the country). I was amazed at how fast I got it working, before I knew of it I had made 5 flutes, each one improving my technique, tuning etc. Thanks for teaching me this trick Lonnie! I love all your videos! Channels like yours is the best of youtube! Be aware that some insects love these tubes, I found many dried tubes that had earwigs or spiders living in them, kinda nasty when they rattle out of there on your lap :D

Thanks for making another great video. I love how they always calm me down. I truly appreciate your peaceful spirit and your knowledge. On a side note; 'I went to this church this past Easter and the people from Hillsongs (do a youtube search of their video 'All Things are Possible'), from Australia, just happened to there and they sang and played music. It was wonderful, and then one of them got out this wooden flute (costs 425.00 if you wanted to buy one there), and I'll tell you this. I have never heard anything like it before. I believe that the Spirit of God was with this man. Everyone's mouth dropped open as he began to play it. Everyone was trying to smooth down the goosebumps running up their arms. Thanks for reminding me. Music is necessary. God bless you, brother.

your instructional videos are entrancing, -very well documented step-by-step tutorial. nicely done! p.s., -when I saw that green weed Indian Celery, my *first thought* was omg is that HOGWEED!? We have invasive hogweed here in Ontario, and Parks & Rec. posts warning signs to identify & avoid contact with... yeah, the two plants look very similar...

Hey man ! I'm trying to make a native american style flute, for my own pleasure, and your video helped me a lot to understand how the "whistle" works. Now I have to try to understand how I can tune it fine but that's my part of the work. Thanks a lot for your help ;-)

+Strat Hamer I too was on that quest a while back and now have a PVC flute that I made that sounds pretty good. You can hear what it sounds like in the intro to may video called Learn The Long Fire Campfire To tune your flute to a certain key by hole placement and hole sizing you can go to flutomat. www.flutopedia.com/naflutomat.htm I did not do the most common PVC flute type fipple air chamber etc layout but rather one closer to the traditional wood flute design.

Nice project Lonnie and I think it worked great. Thanks also for taking the time to show some tuning tips too. I have lots of bamboo down here in Florida so I will give this one a try for sure. Side question: What’s your bug repellent secret. Were you using your natural formula with Mint, Wormwood and Labrador or store bought stuff. They were all over Connie and the camera but they didn’t seem to be bothering you at all. Thanks for another great video...
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 9 лет назад
***** Thank you for the kind words my friend. If you are going to spend the time with a good material such as bamboo, you might be interested in tuning more effectively. Flutopedia has an indispensable tuning program located here www.flutopedia.com/naflutomat.htm I have made several Native American style flutes out of PVC using this tuning program and it is quite helpful.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 9 лет назад
***** I forgot to mention earlier that you can get programs or "apps" for smart phones or tablets if you have either, that will help you tune a musical instrument including flute to the exact note once you know about where to place the fingering holes on the flute. I use a program on my androids called "G-Strings". Good luck.

@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 9 лет назад
dalton vickers I am making mine out of 3/4 inch schedule 40. Key of G. It may not sound quite as clean and clear as a quality made wood flute but it sounds quite good. Not too breathy or windy. It did take me about 6 flutes though to finally get it figured out on how to make one that sounds pretty good (not too "breathy").

The juices in the stalk is what can give you Photo dermatitis good vid brother
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 8 лет назад
It is the outer skin of the stalk. Once those tiny little hairs are scraped off then I don't think there is a problem any more. I wont say that that is definitely the case though since I am not sensitive to it at any time personally. I do know that that is how the Tlingits of Southeast Alaska eat it when young. People with sensitive skin will be affected by simply brushing against it or riding a bicycle with bare legs through it.
@WilliamMyersmantisoutdoors
@WilliamMyersmantisoutdoors 8 лет назад
well the parsnip in the eastern woodlands only gives you photo dermatitis when the plant is cut and the juices are on the skin and exposed to solar radiation

@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 9 лет назад
Barbarossa4U Now that is an idea that I did not think of. If "snake charmers" can charm snakes with a flute then perhaps a flute can tame the wild mosquitoes. lol It is definitely worth a try. I'm afraid that with *MY* flute playing they might leave only to find there whole squadron and return in battle strength force prepared to "take me out". lol

@@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival No worries. I have learned so much from your channel and have been able to put the skills you teach to practical use out in the woods. In a couple of weeks I’m going to make a long fire with a mylar blanket and the painter’s drop cloth to camp in. Huge thanks!

How would i be able to turn this into a A
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 8 лет назад
+MrGhostranger I believe you are asking how to tune this to the key of A. If I am guessing correctly then I will have to say that that would be very difficult for me to say since I have no idea on the length or diameter of material you are working with as well as the wall thickness. There are many web sites that have a lot of info on how to make and tune flutres. here is one that may help to get a rough idea on where to place your holes and how big to make them. www.flutopedia.com/naflutomat.htm There are "apps" for both Android as well as Apple that can be used to fine tune a Native American style flute. I use one for my Android called *"gStrings"*. Hope this helps

What type of hat are you wearing?
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 7 лет назад
The hat is called "Flinders Reef" by Outback trading. It is a cotton oilskin material that when treated sufficiently is waterproof. Evidently that company no longer makes that hat. However I do have a link in my Amazon store for USA shoppers that is very similar and is made by the same company. See the link below if interested. Go to the link and then click on Outdoor Clothing to see the hat. astore.amazon.com/far-north-20

That looks like what I have been told is devils club.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 8 лет назад
+Rustic By Nature There are some similarities between the two plants for sure and at a distance they can be perhaps mistaken for each other. They both have very large green leaves that look similar and the plants are of similar hight at least here locally. Up close though, one can see some major diferences. The biggest difference is the little tiny sharp stickers all over the stocks and stems of the devils club as well as the under side of the leaves. The cow parsnip has none of that anywhere. Please be aware though that some folks are quite sensitive to the chemicals found in the live cow parsnip that can make life miserable for them for a while.

dalton vickers I am quite familiar with their website and RU-vid videos. I really appreciate the way he shares a lot of his knowledge. Their kits appear to be a great value but I wanted a 6 hole flute and all they offer is 5 hole. I have been making my own out of PVC pipe.

Alex piv Yes Allen does seem to be pretty good. Very enjoyable music. You may or may not have seen my comment where I mentioned a recent favorite of mine. His name is Jose Cabezas. He is a native fella from south america but now resides in the United States. Very accomplished musician on several different instruments. I especially enjoy his Native American Flute music with other instrument accompanyment. He is also a commercial flute maker

Ron Larimer You may have bamboo or river cane or...... If so, they make much better flute making materials than what I used in this video. If all else fails you could always make a flute from local wood. If interested, do a web search for making wood native american flutes. There is a wealth of info out there. Also I have been making them out of PVC pipe. The pipe ones don't sound as good as a well built quality wood flute but all things considered, they do sound good if made right.

It might not be a bad idea to tell folks about a plant that looks similar to cow parsnip the giant hogweed that has a much worst reaction
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 9 лет назад
bad hat I did say in the video that people need to be sure of the identity of the plant that they are using. The giant hogweed is very similar to cow parsnip but so are some deadly toxic plants. People do need to know what plant they are using as I said in the video.

first time i have to disagree with ya bro, that plant looks like Giant Hogweed what we have here in the UK and its very dangerous to mess with, I could be wrong about the plant but just in case here is a link ( one of many ) to look at,,,,,www.cbsnews.com/pictures/giant-hogweed-8-facts-you-must-know-about-the-toxic-plant/

Electronicpoacher1 You can disagree all you want. It still won't change the fact that I know what I am talking about. I eat this plant. Look it up. Cow Parsnip. I can't believe you want to tell me I don't know what I am talking about with you basing your judgement on a poor video representation (not detailed close-up) of a plant you probably have never seen before since you live 1000s of miles away and across the ocean. I am personally standing on the spot handling the plant that I am very familiar with and have been for so many years I don't remember when I first learned of this plant

***** dont worry my friend , i figured you were having a bad time lol, I meant no harm bro just when ya said ya couldnt remember the name it looks very similar to Giant Hog weed in the UK thats all i was saying but no matter obviously I am wrong and its not that plant so thank you for your apology bro and greatly accepted God bless you ,

Electronicpoacher1 You missunderstood me. I knew the name of the plant no problem. What I didn't know was the medical term for what happens to the skin of sensitive people when touching the fresh plant. IE "photo-toxic", "photo dermatitis", This means that the chemical reaction is dependant on light.
