The Tula Shop - tulasendlesssummer.com/shop-tula/ Some of our stanchion bases were leaking and it turned out that our stainless lifelines that we replaced a year ago probably aren’t as high quality stainless as they should be. We decided that instead if repairing and re-bedding the stanchion bases conventionally to borrow an idea that some racing boats are using as well as our friend Mike and make carbon fiber stanchions. We bed a fiberglass rod into the deck of our catamaran with a collar that a carbon tube will slip over as the stanchion. This will prevent any leaks from forming again, it will take some weight off the boat, and it will be a great experiment. Our next project will be to splice our own dyneema lifelines.

Very well done video, my friends.I have a little information for you. Quality in stainless is subjective. 316 stainless will rust and that doesn't make it "quality" or not. I was a machinist nearly 40 years and worked with all types of stainless. I made any new hardware on my boats with 304 grade stainless. 304 will take a polish and not brown up. I made mooring bits and cleats with this grade and never had a failure through storms and a hurricane. 18-8 is a common fastener grade stainless and when sized properly for the job doesn't fail either. I really don't understand the marine fastination with 316. It is an alloy that is plenty strong but browns up and stains the boat's finish. 304 is a much better choice as it holds a polish and doesn't streak the fiberglass. I have a little consern with your stantion bases. I like the basic idea but when filling a hole in the deck straight sides are not very strong. The top and bottom of the hole should be beveled to create an hourglass shape. Also the G10 bottom plate should have the fiberglass post through it to provide strength. I don't know the wall thickness of the carbonfibre tube but I hope you researched the shear strength. Impact of a body pushed by a wave can be quite high. I admire the way you two tackle your repairs and Billie's skills show in his workmanship, confidence, and research. I am a little overkill in safety and strength areas. Tme will tell on this improvement and so far it looks good. Can't wait for the next video.

You guys are killing it. Wonderful that you can do so much of these projects by yourselves. The nicks, cuts and abrasions on your hands and arms tell the story. Time flies watching your videos. Thanks.

OK - someone please tell me why I find this relaxing? Is it because I will never have to do this in my lifetime? Great video tx

I like the Carbon stanchions idea. I might have put a small flat on the fiberglass rods to allow the water to drain out , I think dirt will clog the gaps but looking forward to see how they hold up. Cheers warren.

One VERY important thing to remember when working with stainless is not to contaminate it. Even the best quality stainless will rust if say you use an old steal wrench, pair of channel locks or old screw driver head. I've seen this happen a 1000 times. Regular steel pieces can be embedded into the stainless steel causing rust.
