You guys have been asking for a DIY Chevron Bench tutorial since I shared one on my blog a few years ago... and with the weather getting nice, I finally found time to make one to match the outdoor coffee table I made last summer. So excited to show you how I made this outdoor cedar bench in just a few days!

Wow! That is a beautiful bench! I love chevron furniture, but was always worried about the wood expansion. The spaces fixe that. Great idea! I have 2 questions: 1) Would you mind explaining why you put water on the wood between sanding? 2) Why do you use a urethane with cedar? Isn't it already weather resistant? Thanks for sharing 🙂

Thank you! I wet the grain because when you add a finish to raw wood, it can “raise the grain” or make the wood feel hairy. By raising the grain and knocking it down, it stops it from feeling hairy when you add the finish. As for the urethane, it helps keep the cedar tan - cedar naturally greys outdoors. Hope this helps!

Yess! Please do! I’d love that. These might be a new pair... I don’t remember. I replace my Vans a lot because I destroy them. 😂

Hello, You inspired me to try to make this. Have you found that the way the chevron pieces are attached to the thin board frame that it is weak in any way. I am asking as i am a heavy person. I wouldn't want to break it. Me and the wife i am guessing are close to 500 lbs. most of it is me. Also can you tell me what brand of spar you used? Thank you. I think this bench is wonderful!

I wonder if it would work to build it kind of in reverse? Start with building the frame for each one of the four rectangles inside the bench, attach the boards while leaving them a bit long and them trim the ends with a track saw like you do for you geometric wood projects. Then you could attach the centre cross beams and frame pieces around those finished rectangles. Maybe it wouldn't work structurally for some reason, but it seems like it might help with the dodgy angles.

Looks really great! Pocket holes on bottom not only looks better, they will not allow water in them, only spiders. Did you use galvanized nails? Otherwise will they not simply rust out quickly?

Let me axe Ya a question SuperCat?? Would you consider doing the Shoosiobohn (I know I mis spelled it), only enough to show the grain a burnt & still have natural wood color showing. Is that technique named the same?? Just curious is all. Great build as always Homes. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!!

You could torch and then sand a bit to keep the texture but show the grain! Hope all is well!

cool project Sam, the tip to keep frame square is to secure offcut peice of wood corner to corner.

Nice job, Sam. It is an attractive piece. Will you go back to work via Zoom or 'the old fashioned way'? At this point in time, my entire family is waiting to be told if they will be using Zoom or not. Have a good vacation. I'm looking forward to the new projects. Hi, if I was doing this and it was so warm, I would just glue all the pieces on, let the glue set for a couple of hours and the turn it over and nail

@@diyhuntress trebuchet seems impractical as it draws too much attention. A catapult you can easily hide behind your fences so better for sneak attacks. You would get a few views if you built a catapult.

Thank you so much! Absolutely! You can purchase most of the lumber in the sizes I cut them to for this project. I just had to mill my own because I had to use what the store had in stock. 😊

I have the materials breakdown on my website (I know lumber price can vary by location). But, I spent a little less than $50 for the lumber for this project.
