I made them out of angle aluminum. Didn't have to form them, just cut them and weld them onto the aluminum tube. I got my stock from a young man I knew who was taking a welding course at a local Tech school.
Paul, thanks for the video? How are the steps holding up? I am a 230lb guy and was wondering if I should maybe get a beefier aluminum angle (such as 0.250" or 0.375") for my steps? Thanks
They are all as good as they were on day one. I go 270 in my birthday suit, so you shouldn’t have an issue. I built 4 with the intent of destroying one of them by loading it up. It was holding up so well that I decided to just keep it in a set of four.
MrShysterme no I didn’t. I paid a HS kid who was taking a welding class at the local tech school to weld them. I’m planning to make a set for my nephew and for one of my hunting buddies. This time my nephew will do the welding. I can weld a little but he’s much more proficient than I am. I paid the HS kid and this time it won’t cost. My nephew is a farmer and has his own welder and a kick ass shop.
I got them from a kid I know who was in Tech school learning to weld. He got the material for me. Sorry. I don't know where. You can google it though and I'm sure there are a lot of resources. A lot of guys have bought 1' square tubing for DIY projects, especially climbing sticks.
Hi Paul. I was wondering since you got the new standoffs, are you going to sell your lone wolf standoffs? I'm on the saddlehunter forums. I've been planning on ordering some from the wolf, but would rather help another hunter out if your not going to use them
Actually, I decided to keep the LW standoffs and sent the others back. I liked them in some respects but for the most part the LW stacked easier and were quieter. The big thing though is that the LW clamped better to the tree. There is something to be said about them being able to pivot. I noticed that with the other standoffs, there was almost always one of the four parts that should be touching the tree not touching the tree. Made the sicks a little wobbly. And I was testing them on a pretty straight tree.
hunter truett may $40 for materials and versa button hardware and $80 for the lone wolf standoffs. That’s for all sticks. Four of them. $120/4 = $30 per stick.
I'm not really making them to sell, but I am planning on making a shorter set because my knees are starting to get bad. My Nephew also want a set so I'm going to make a set for him as well. So these might go up for sale. Let me know if you are really interested.
Hey Paul sorry I just now seen your response. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or what but I cannot figure out how to send you a message on here. Do you have a FB? Or maybe your could send me one
1" angle aluminum by 3/16" thick. They are 8" from end to end. Sorry, I forgot that little detail. The gap in the middle is theoretically an inch wide to allow it to accept the stick above it for stacking, but I made them a little wider on each side so the ropes can still slip in there and so they aren't so difficult to fit together when stacking. It think about 1/8' or so on each side is sufficient.
No, I got the idea from some sticks that Jared Schaefer from Tehrd made. The beast sticks weren't out yet when I made these. These are actually lighter than the beast sticks and the steps are way more comfortable on the feet.
