DIY CNC Enclosure - Silenced & Dust Free Solution (Cheap)

This is an easy to build CNC enclosure that will provide silence and dust free CNCing. All the OSB was found at construction site where they were building a house. 2x4s were purchased but there was lots at the construction site in the scrap pile. Polystyrene foam board was left overs from a past job, which ended up free. I think it was about $8 a board or something like that. I found pink foam board in the dumpster at the construction site that would have worked as well, but used this instead.
106db coming out of the CNC router was quieted to 75db. Which is the tone of a normal conversation. I could have coated the walls in egg crate foam for even more silence, I found this to do the job and the price was right.

Nice job I just made one myself. It helps a lot with dust and cuts the noise down as well. I use a security camera and wifi plug as well so I can shut down in the house if I see any problems.

Interesting material choice with the styrofoam. Styrofoam is more for heat than sound. I think a good thick layer of it would be a good thing, but I would have supplemented the choice of materials to stop a wider range of frequencies. I like using 30 mil thick construction paper, the thick stuff, and use 2 layers of 3/4" sheetrock on each side, and you could put styrofoam inside that, and 3/4 plywood on the outside. You need some weight to stop sound. Also, you could put some odd shapes of styrofoam inside to create uneven walls inside so there are uneven reflections so there will be nothing trying to resonate. Maybe a layer of thick home insulation, or thick super heavy commercial insulation much better, and put that between the plywood and the sheetrock. The sealing to make it air tight is really important. Still a great job. Glad it worked out for you.

Cnthib57 Thank you Curtis!!! I almost installed a pull out drawer inside the enclosure... For sure a cool idea!! I do want to make something that holds all my bits and I want to buy the 2 exact size wrenches to have just for the CNC! (Return the present ones to the tool box) Glad you liked the ending... It really gets the kids rolling in tears when I break into character and get a little cray cray! 😜

If you make plans for a laser cutter attachment, I think you could get a pretty penny on the side! I saw one where they converted a CNC to be one, custom mount, added the power source and changed up the software a bit. I still don't know much about adding one to mine, so figured I would toss the idea to you, cause I like you tutorials lol. The X,Y, & Z computer navigated directions appears to be the same.

Thank you for sharing this.. I will be building my own version very soon. I will thought make sure mine has a solid floor for the CNC to rest on.. Might make it 4-6 inches of insulation thick under it. (I have a Shapeoko 3 XXL not assembled yet) But like everything you did with yours. I might put the laptop on its own shelf though.. Thanks for sharing as I wan to run mine at all hours like my 3D printers..

That looks great. If you caulk all the air gaps, especially with something like green glue, it will work even better. BTW egg crate foam does not sound proof, it is for reducing reflections.

i like it other then the part i would turn it 60 degrees clockwise , so the end of the table is facing the door , just in case you want to mill like a larger sign into 2 steps with the door open.

Just wondering what a layer of eggcrate foam would do. You see it used in sound studios all the time to absorb acoustic reflections. Nice you care about the neighbors. I don't like to use my metal abrasive saw as it's so darn loud.

luckettg excellent question! This was my biggest fear as I had done something similar to this with my air compressor and a silenced box and ran into issues with it overheating. You can find this video on my channel. This cnx box howevever knock on wood has never given me a problem. Likely because it's such a large area in there for it to heat up. Some people say what happens if it gets over a hundred degrees. That's fine but that's like saying people in Arizona when its a hundred and twenty degrees can't use a CNC in their garage because it'll stop working. Some Cuts last up to an hour and a half and sometimes more. I keep a thermometer in there and if it gets up to 116 degrees inside the Box, I pause the job and open the box to let it cool off. Once it's had time to cool off I close the Box up and start it again. Most Cuts will be under an hour and 30 minutes and you won't need to let it vent. You can obviously run an inlet of air in an outlet of air but in all the testing I've done so far I have not needed it on my box. If I were to put one it would likely allow the noise to escape. People can tell me their skeptical my motor is going to burn up on my router tomorrow. But honestly it'll be fine because I can actually work in my shop without earmuffs on and without dust and was the single greatest thing I have done to this cnc besides making the bit duster. If the rider dies tomorrow I will gladly share it.. if you have a CNC in you're on the fence if you should build an enclosure I highly suggest it, it's worth the time and the few dollars I showed you how to build it. 👊🏻😉

Great Video! I also own an E3 and just love it but that Dewalt can get a bit noisy. I noticed your vacuum tubes near the spindle and those cool looking work piece hold downs, any plans for videos on those two addons?

57eje I have a raw video of the hold downs I haven’t posted yet. I may make those plans available. The air duster I will probably sell at fair price. It took me quite a few tries to make it perfect. It keeps the work free of dust so you can see what it is doing. 👊🏻 That is the final product and works great.

if you get semy soft foam under cnc router so its sort of floats on it you will have it more quiet as it eats moest vibrations going from cnc frame try to stack your cnc on some sort of like a car suspensions so its semy floats helpet not only in noise on my 3040 cnc but also improved some chatter as vibration is most killer for noise )

Nice box build, I was thinking of using 3/4 mdf for mine since its denser. I'm more concerned with the sound of actual cutting than the spindle sound. Has anyone used Mdf? How did it work out for you?

Nice Box.I Have a question or two. because of the enclosure and everything in it how hot does it get and how did or do you deal with the excess heat? I like the idea but I don't want to overheat the cnc.

Thats a common question and after a year and a half of doing this.. I can safely say exhausting the router heat has not caused an issue at this point to the router or electronics. 1 hour of cutting non stop will result in a temp of 120 degrees. If my project has not finished in that time period, I will pause the job. Open the box, let it cool off and finish the cut. Do i have to do that.. No.. But I think its probably wise if you are going to do anything with any power tool over an hour + to let it cool off at some point. (My opinion) In regards to 120 degrees.. Meh.. Arizona in the summer gets that hot daily and cnc's work just fine in those temps every day... I now own the larger E4, and this one was passed down to my father. He runs it 2-3 times a week in the enclosure still no issue. I plan on building the new E4 box larger but still no vent system. If there was a vent system. It would be one I could pause... hit a switch... all the hot air is removed in 10 seconds and close it up and turn it back on.. (But its not really needed.. it would just be a cool feature to show your friends)

I made something very similar, but I used egg carton foam for sound dampening. It started getting really hot inside, and I was worried that I'd spark a fire with all the little dust flecks floating around. I ended up attaching a vacuum port to one side and putting a small vent hole on the other to get the fine dust out. The extra noise from the vacuum didn't help, but I'd imagine that dust collector would have been a little quieter.

WoodenCreationz Without dust collection it will get very hot inside and your router will recirculation an incredible amount of dust through the bearings and brushes. You will find that a dust shoe is necessary and a great addition.

Hey Brian. What are those plastic tubes you have mounted on the spindle for? I am almost done assembling my new Bobscnc so if those tubes are for dust collection or additional air for cooling I'd be interested in installing them on mine also. Great video.

Alex Reid Hey Alex! There to blow the dust off of the bit while it's cutting. It's something I've invented and it works pretty good. If it's something you wish to do feel free to go ahead and try it otherwise I'll probably make CNC plans for a few bucks and have them available in the new year.

I no longer have this enclosure.. But.. What I learned was... If you have the E3... Build the enclosure for the Evo 4... Because you will eventually do the upgrade and need a larger enclosure...

Not a single one. I have a thermometer in the enclosure and when it gets up to 120 degrees.. (1hr 1/2) I open the door let it all cool down.. Its run for 3+ years with zero issues. I look at it this way. Arizona gets up to those temps and you dont hear of peoples cncs dying in Arizona. There have been lots that have made enclosures like mine after this video and none that I know of have had any issues. I am getting ready to build a new enclosure for my Evo 4 with the same design. In the meantime, I even went as far as to bench the DeWalt 611 back to being an ordinary Palm Router ( it's actual purpose ) and picked up a 800W Water Cooled Spindle controlled by a VFD - Much "silence", such bliss, wow. I did this with a cnc machine at work and noticed a ton of heat buildup inside. How is yours after running for a few hours?

On long jobs I will run it for an hour… open the doors to let it cool off and sweep it out while I wait. I blow compressed air on the router to clean off the dust build up. Then fire it back up about 4-5 minutes later. I had this box in the video for about 3 years and never burnt up a router. I have a new larger box with a bigger cnc and had it 2 1/2 years and never burnt up a router on it either. I put a temp gauge in the box. When it gets up to the 90s I let the box cool off. If you think about it people in Arizona use cncs in hotter weather so really it’s fine. If I had ever burnt up a router I would think different but so far it seems to work great keeping sound down and dust to zero. Hope that helps. 👊🏻

Once the cut is done I shop vac it out. In the video I show it takes jusy a few seconds to shop vac the dust. 😉

The polystyrene sound proofing you use.. it appears to have a white material over it (Yes/No)? if so what is it, if not then what is that product called and where did you get it, it looks like it would clean up easily is why I ask. Most of the sound proofing board I've looked at has a paper covering which I'm thinking would reflect noise though I really have no idea.. thanks.. Nice Video and you gave lots of good suggestions..

the white material on top pretty much looks like fiberglass fabric. I have the same stuff but just as sleeve, and its not hazardous like lets say stone wool. It feels more like fabric than anything else but its heat resistant up to 600 degrees Celsius

Did you hook up dust collection to this enclosure or just vacuum it out after each use? This video is great, thank you. I am ordering a e3 machine in the near future and I'm definitely going to make an enclosure for it now that I have seen this. Great idea! One more question, do you use F-engrave program only? Or are there other programs you use to run the cnc? If so, are those programs also free?

Shawn McKinney Lots of great questions.... I have Invented a Air Duster that blows the dust to the back of the CNC where I have a tray. The goal is to empty it when it’s full. I have a shop vac in reach if I need to clean it out squeaky clean. Awesome on the E3! It’s a really nice machine and I think at a fair price. I don’t get a dime if you buy one or not but I love mine and I think everyone else does too. In regards to the programs. Fengrave and inventables easel are the 2 best I have found for ease of use. I am going to do a easel video soon. Do not setup your CNC to automatically cut using the CNC software. When you get done have it build the gcode file for you. I will have a video out soon showing that. Also makercam and ArtCam are free... again a lot of learning in those. I have vcarve pro and straight up it costs a lot of of money but I can do some amazing stuff... multi bits, multi depths... it’s pretty amazing. Easel will be your friend so star with it. Stay tuned and I will have some more fun stuff down the pipe with it .👊🏻

Another question, could you share the plans, or at least the overall sizes of the enclosure? I haven't bought the e3 yet, but want to get an idea of the size so I can have a table built for it when it arrives.

Sure man.. I will get some dimensions and post them. Again... yours might vary by what kind of sound proofing you use for yours. (I used 2 layers of foam board on the inside.) Also i am 6'7 so i made it to my height, everything in my shop it raised so I dont have to work leaning over for 8 hours..lol

Watch this video at 1:11 Dust extraction is pretty quick and most of it stays on the cnc itself. I say leave the shop vac off until the project is complete and a few second clean up is much nicer on the ears than running it for long periods of a time as you cut with something like a dust shoe. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xWyYHJ7QJFU.html

Maple_Dude It doesn't hurt it. That foam is as hard as a rock. I did foam all the way around the box so I didn't have sound leak from any surface. The box is impressivly quiet but I have toyed with the idea of egg crate foam in there as well to see if it will go dead silent...... 👊🏻😉

For sure!!! I was worried about heat issues, but to this day I have never ran into any. If it goes for over an hour I pause the job and let it air out. I would probably do it with out an enclosure as well. Not sure if your running the E3 cnc.. If you are.. Not pushing my product, but I sell something called a Bit Duster that is for dust management on the E3. I will drop a link. It allows you to go dead quiet with the enclosure and have a way to clear the dust so you can see what its doing with out a noisy shop vac or dust collector. Do you see a need for ventilation? I'm thinking an outlet to connect a dust collector or shop vac to, and an inlet for fresh air to enter on the other end. Then you would have both dust extraction and cooling for the machine.

Jim Hester I am still trying to determine if it will be needed. It’s like a very well insulated cooler and the router puts off some hot air. I have been toying with the idea of a venting system and a possible fan to suck out the air. My dad explained I need to put a thermometer in there and measure the temperature to see how hot it’s getting. If it’s 80-100 degrees... well it gets up to 115 degrees in the summer in my shop on the hottest days and the CNC runs fine. For sure with a smaller quicker project I think it’s gonna be fine. I made an enclosure for my compressor that was pretty small but vented. It kept getting to hot and passing out... If it becomes and issue I will update everyone. 👊🏻

Yeah. The total temp in the box doesn't give a good idea of how hot the actual router motor is getting. If you have a shop vac anyway, it sure wouldn't hurt, especially since your shop gets that hot in summer. If nothing else, it will prolong the life of the router. Looking forward to updates if you decide to do it.

Use a proper spindle and it won’t be as loud. Problem with insulated sealed enclosures is excess heat when your cutters prefer to run cool for best cut and longevity. Every degree matters but if you’re using it once a month it probably isn’t too big an ordeal.

You are correct a spindle is quieter. And you are correct fresh cool air is ideal. But cuts for under 1hr to 1.5 hours have always been excellent on my setup. I suggest to air out the box if you use this design and want to do multiple hour cuts.. The DeWalt has lasted for many years with this enclosure and I used it 3 or 4 times a week. But in reality people in Arizona use cnc's when it's above 110 degrees.... So in reality.. keeping the router clean and free of dust is probably the number one priority to long router life. 👊🏻😉 Then again routers don't cost that much and any dead silent operation is worth the $40 if it pooped out.. Many computers run between 50c-90c and if you do fry the board it's not a huge financial problem at all. If it goes over 200c odds are its already on fire lol

This is actually a bobscnc e3. Which is no longer in production. I now own a Evolution 4. Its an amazing machine and worth looking into... hope that helps.

Jose you can tell this is not a shapeoko... It's laser cut wood. Nice build none the less. I'm needing to make one to run my CNC in my apartment.

All that foam does next to nothing for keeping the sound from escaping the enclosure. You use foam to keep sound from bouncing around inside a space, like a recording studio. If you want to keep sound from penetrating through the walls, you want dense. You want MDF or brick, not styrofoam.
