DIY Compost Part 2 - How to Start Composting

Fall is just the best time to do composting! There's so much plant material I can use in my composts these days. This is the second part of my series about starting a compost. In the last video, My DIY Compost Bin at Home, I built the bin from scratch. (Follow the link below to watch it).
Today, I wanted to give you an update on what's happened these past few weeks since I got started. One thing that hit me while creating this little mini-series is that a lot of new gardeners don't actually know how to start a compost, let alone how to use compost in the garden over time.
I understand that it can seem a bit complicated, so that's why I'm going through everything you need to know about making compost as a beginner in this video. Step by step. I hope it helps you get going with your own compost pile at home!

Great vid. Signed up for your channel. I like original ideas and approaches. No brown and green story, no temperature measurements, no weed seeds and pathogens terminations stories. Most of all I like you see the compost bin as a last resort, when mulching options are not available. Greetings from Holland, just a backyard no-dig veggie grower, that abandoned composting everything.

Thanks for help! I see you're putting plant material in. What happens if the plants had any disease is that okay to put in? DO you add a layer of dirt or just compost from another garden? I read years ago to add a layer of dirt as well. Any advise would be helpful.

It is ok to put it in anyway. I don´t add anything else in this compost but a have mor compost in the garden.Take care! 😊

Sadly in this cold Season rats move into our compost- do you have this problem 🙈? What would you suggest? We have so much to fill it with still. There is no cooked food just vegetable pealing and fruit and finished flowers and vegetables from our garden. It is not nice thing but l do not want to throw all that goodness away

I dont usually have problem with rats I do have cats to help out. Make sure that you don't put anything but things from the garden in the compost bin. Best of luck to you.

Hello Sara! It's a pleasure to watch your videos, a new subscriber is here :) I have 2 questions regarding your way of composting things (yes, I'm a boring person). You put only greens there, no soil and no browns. Don't you have things rotten instead of composted in this way? Second question: you said, "After a few months I will turn the soil from the first bin to the second." How do you know exactly when to do it? Can't it be too early or too late?

What about dried flowers. Can’t eat the grass makes money selling the dried flowers.

Absolutely, that’s great. And I love Can’t eat the grass-videos 😊 Dried flowers are harvested when they look their best. My flowers are not good enough for that. We have had frost many weeks ago. I dry some flowers too, many in summer and early fall.
