Finding a suitable shower curtain rod for my clawfoot tub and angled ceiling was near impossible (unless I wanted to spend over $300). So I made one out of simple copper plumbing pipes.
This rod is rectangular, about 3.5 feet by 2.5 feet. To make this rod, I used...
-About 12 feet of 3/4" heating grade copper pipe. amzn.to/2WPivsy
-Two 3/4" copper elbow joints. amzn.to/2XtnYK0
-Two 3/4" copper "T joints".
Two 3/4" iron flanges for mounting the rod to the wall. amzn.to/31D736Z (I painted mine green for looks and also to slow the rusting process.)
-Two 3/4" copper male to threaded male fitting. amzn.to/2InkaRX
My one concern is that the copper fitting that is screwed into the flange will react with the iron and degrade over time. I will be keeping an eye on it to see how it reacts. If anyone has any insight on copper/iron interaction, please let me know in the comments below.

I'd been thinking of a copper pipe shower curtain rod for an oddly shaped shower I built. I'd been thinking I'd need a support in the middle. Obviously I won't. Thanks for taking the time to share your build.

Thanks so much for this! We just built it, massive improvement over the ugly and flimsy store bought curtain rod we had, with the added benefit of being exactly the size we want. It's so much more sturdy than before, and we were able to add a solid foot of extra width over the old dimensions so our shoulders no longer touch the curtain when in the shower. And I really like the look of it. Was also a fun project to learn how to solder pipes, my last solder was a lot better than my first, but still nowhere near as neat as yours. But getting there! We exactly copied your design except we added a support in the middle, not that it particularly needed it, but we had one left over from the old installation. For people wondering about the price (as I was), here's what it cost us. We bought everything at sLowes: Two 3/4" 10 foot copper pipes: $44 Two 90 degree elbow joins: $3.25 Two t-joints: $10 Two copper male to threaded male fittings: $10 Two "floor flanges" (the piece that screws into the wall): $17 Pack of drywall screws with anchors: $8 Total for parts: $92.25 I didn't have most of the plumbing tools, so I also needed: Pipe cutter: $21 Soldering kit: $23 Propane torch: $25 Total for tools: $69

That looks fantastic! What a great solution. That's exactly what I've been looking for.

Update: It's been about 4 months since I installed the shower curtain rod. I have yet to see any visible reaction between the copper and the iron fitting. The copper is certainly losing its shine, but that was to be expected -- it has not turned green, though. Overall, I'm happy with the outcome and it is still working great.

IT looks good! How much did you spend in total for it?

If you polish it with wire wool and paint it in a clear varnish, it will retain shine

Should use 3/4 inch PVC-it will never turn green like copper and is much less expensive-I would also recommend another support connected to the ceiling in the middle of the longest piece of copper-if anyone ever slips in shower and grabs the curtain or curtain rod, those flanges will rip right out of the wall

I made one like this, Mine is in a D shape. Like a $300 rod they want too much for. Im looking into making another one except the front rod would be a bend out over the tub so your shower curtain is further away from your body. My shower pressure makes it suck into you right now haha its annoying. Good job on the install, and solder joints look good and strong. I used black iron flanges on mine, with galvanized pipe i had laying around.

Danny Martin Love the look of copper, but I was thinking about using galvanized pipe

I built one based on this video. I also used steel wool to make the copper shiny then sprayed it with clear lacquer. Bbn also, there is a product that does a cold weld with copper pipes. That's what I used.

John Fealy awesome. What’s the name of the cold weld product, is it like a glue? Good idea on the lacquer.

@@lukeqstafford I can't recall the name but I got it at ace hardware. It's like working with PVC pipe and glue.

Nice job I had the same mind set, it is ridiculous to spend $200.00 for some cheap tubing when copper piping would be a much better deal and more durable .

So the whole set up is holding its own weight without a connection to the ceiling?? very neat!

Are your shower controls separate from tub controls? I am looking at setup in basement bathroom that has shower plumbing already installed in wall (tub plumbing completely separate). Wondering about shower curtain practically when shower controls are on wall (essentially behind the curtain). Thoughts?

We need to make something similar but just an L shaped rod, instead of a full circle.

A very nice bit of work, but not a good explanation. What did you use to 'glue' the elbows at the curves of copper rod? How did the threaded ends screw into the wall phalanges? Can you remove the shower rod without unscrewing phalanges from wall? Some of the many questions which were not answered.
@Chris.Rhodes

the "glue" on the elbows is solder. You would have to screw the flanges on after fitting everything together, place it where you need it, and put screws through the flanges to hold it up. It would be easier to fit everything together and solder on a table or something other than trying to solder close to a wall like that. And once soldered, and installed the only reason for taking it down would be to replace it but other than that you're good to go. I made one similar to this. and im looking into making another one, but doing the outside rod bent, so it goes out over the tub so the curtain doesnt touch you while youre showering.
