Yea. I looked a while back and didn’t find anything as simple. Recently tested it with 1/2-13 spiral flute tap. It worked. But the drill did trip do to over-current a few times. I think a more modern hammer drill (brushless) would have done just fine. Will be picking up a newer one soon. The parts list is in the description and everything was in stock as of a few days ago.

@@KnoxMachining I was planning on building mine based off of my old Ryobi (same as yours) that hasn't seen a battery for several years - my plan is to run it off of a 30A DC power supply I have on the shelf. I also have a spare monitor arm from an earlier project, so zero cost there. After picking the Ryobi apart though, I reconsidered. The clutch mechanism failed to impress when available for inspection... Based off of your above advise I have ordered a brushless drill that claims 60Nm torque, and has a comfortably low 0-400 RPM lower gear. My plan for it is to pick it apart, and optimally remove the Jacobs chuck and turn an interface for the tapping holders that I also have on order. I'll repurpose the trigger, 3D printing a suitable mount for it so that it fits logically with the final setup. Somewhat overkill when a pneumatic kit with the arm, spindle, tap holder kit, and more can be had for just a few bucks more, but there is honour in making your own tools... :)

Hey Billy. Love the idea and the execution. If I could make an editing recommendation: disassembly and reassembly should be mostly done with jump cuts and 5x speed. Your objective should be to make the length as short as possible, while still communicating the project goals to keep your audience engaged. Excellent idea and thank you for sharing!

Nice tool, good thinking. If the arm needs more mass and/or stiffness, you can pour epoxy and fiberglass chop into the plastic channels.
@KnoxMachining
@KnoxMachining 2 года назад
Good idea. The arm is mostly cast aluminum. I took off all the plastic shrouding as it severed no purpose. In fact the shroud on the upper arm prevented it from completely closing.
@Bob_Adkins
@Bob_Adkins 2 года назад
@@KnoxMachining Sorry, I assumed it was mostly plastic.
@KnoxMachining
@KnoxMachining 2 года назад
No worries, I probably should have made it more clear I. The video. That’s one of the reasons I picked that particular arm. I could tell it was cast aluminum vs a hard epoxy/nylon arm.
@Bob_Adkins
@Bob_Adkins 2 года назад
I bought an articulated iPad holder so I could use my pad for a GPS. Although made from strong plastic, the heavy pad made it bounce alarmingly on rough streets. I poured epoxy with fiberglass chop in the hollow channels, and it reduced the flexing enough to make it usable.@@KnoxMachining

Is it worth getting if the price is right?

I paid $200 or $250 for mine. It works. I wish I had the complete anvil set for it. I just have the one diamond and anvil. Mine has the 15kg weights. It’s a nice unit. It has instructions on how to use it on the left side of the machine and the Rockwell chart on the right.

Very nice Billy. I just found and ordered a pneumatic tapping head to make one of these. How low will the tap go relative to the table? Will I need to make something to raise up the item being tapped?
@KnoxMachining
@KnoxMachining 2 года назад
I'll have to take a measurement. But, I think I can almost touch the table with the tap socket. I'll post measurements tomorrow. I just noticed that the arm isn't available on amazon right now.. May need to look and see if there is a different version that'll work and update the link.

@KnoxMachining
@KnoxMachining 2 года назад
Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. I don't think we have too many needs for strange taps. Mostly your standard stuff. We have several cheap tap/die sets from HF, etc etc.. I have a little "store" setup that well sell screws and nuts. I have dedicated drawers for endmills and inserts, and one for drills and taps, but, I've not stocked it yet. The guys at the space can be hard on taps and break them. So, I want to stock decent quality ones they can just buy and keep for themselves or replace the community tap if they break it.

Do people come by or book times where they can use the milling machine or lathes or is it a members thing
@KnoxMachining
@KnoxMachining 2 года назад
You join the Maker Space. The monthly dues gives you 24/7/365 access to the tools. The mill and lathe do require one-time authorization classes before you can use them. And we have a general overall authorization class that covers everything else in machining. Welding, Blacksmithing and Woodworking have simulate classes.

Billy, how does your tapping arm do in steel?
@KnoxMachining
@KnoxMachining Год назад
Hey Bruce, I've been able to tap 1/2-13 in .75" thick hot rolled. The drill was in low gear, using the spiral flute taps. The Ryobi hammer drill did stall out a few times. It's a 1st gen model with less torque than the new ones. (Probably 1/2 the torque) Do to the way the last joint hinges horizontally, I did have to hold it with two hands to keep it from rotating, the single bolt isn't enough for the torque needed for the 1/2-13. Upgrading to a new drill and stabilizing the joint will make it work way better.

Always in aluminum. Kinda like most of the mini lathe video's, aluminum.
@KnoxMachining
@KnoxMachining 2 года назад
I find aluminum harder to tap than steel because it’s so gummy. However, I was able to tap 1/2-13 in steel recently. The drills battery shut off a few times due to over current. However, that drill is a first gen Ryobi with lower torque. They newer ones have more and wouldn’t have batted an eye.
