I have built the DIY machine (robot) which makes delicious cupcakes. Everything is controlled with Arduino. The two stepper motors are responsible for moving cupcake from dough station to the cooking station (microwave oven) to the topping station. At first the machine was not working properly, but I managed to adjust everything to make it work.

I experimented with 3D printing peanut butter on my channel and what I learned was that the syringe has to be filled up with absolutely no air bubbles. Since air is much more compressible than water, the compression to extrude from the syringe will cause it to leak afterwards. Retracting the plunger of the syringe after extruding also helped against leakage. Thanks for sharing and happy holidays! 😊

I think someone made a good "open source paste extruder". And i think the person making that "OpenPNP" thing also did peanut butter. and Happy Holidays ! Make a festive (tiny, non-homogenized) cupcake for freinds/family!

And outside of the frosting pumps, everything else workedd great! Some minor tweaks and it should be near perfect.

If the compressibility of the syringe contents is variable, maybe a force sensor is required along with some control software to be confident that the proper amount is extruded. In the 3d printing world, the term "linear advance" refers to compensation for static (non-variable) nonlinear extrusion volume, and it seems to work well for most people who bother setting it up, but I suspect they find their linear advance settings aren't as good if they change materials or other operating parametera.

Definitely your most worthwhile endeavor so far! :)) With some fine tuning it's going to be a beast of a machine! May I suggest that you reverse the feed on all 3 tubes after dispensing each material. That may help with the dripping of unwanted material on the machine. Also pick a batter mix without chunks. Your next thing should be a cake decorating machine. There are already some out there, but once you master this task, you can combine it to create even more beautiful cupcakes! Great stuff. Every geeks dream to combine tech and junk food. Yumm! Maybe you could insert the cream topping dispenser down INTO the cupcake and make one like I used to buy at the store with cream filling!

Another way of evening out the energy some microwave ovens use is by pointing the magnatron at a metal fan. That might help since you have such a small cooking chamber. You might also add a cooling fan station before the toppings.

man, I love your channel! I would so love to build robots with servos and actuators, maybe even a servo 3d printer but they're so expensive! I would love to find a cheap alternative to driving servos for making inexpensive robot arms or other devices, but servos are prohibitively expensive and even "cheap" stuff like Odrive is $100+ so you'd end up spending upwards of $400 for two servos

@excitedbox5705
@excitedbox5705 3 года назад
You should retract the plunger on the toppings to create negative pressure. Also adding a fan to cool the cupcake will help the toppings not melt. The microwave leakage could be from the hole for the motor under the cup. A normal microwave has another sheet of metal which yours lacks. The simple solution would be fixing a screen around the entire machine to keep people from getting their hands caught in the conveyor as well and that way you can shield the waves making it out of the microwave.
@michaegi4717
@michaegi4717 3 года назад
Impressive result. At the beinnging I was concerned about the miceo wave oven. But with all your security measures it seems to be fairly safe. For liquid topings you might use something like the "soda fountain machine" from the channel "the q". I guess their machine is not good solution for soda (because of the CO2-gas from the soda will push the soda out) but for your topings it should be a clean solution.

3D printers have the same problem of dropping down unwanted material. They (try to) solve this by pulling back the material for maybe 4mm. So you might try to pull back the "pistons" for just a few millimeters after each usage by 2 or 3 or 4mm maybe. For the next cupcake you need to push the material by these extra millmeters down. But it is difficult with such liquid materials like the ones you need. You would need some tweaking and it might not really help. Maybe you get an air pocket on top between your "material" and the "piston"... Well, you could try it. If it helps, it's great. If it makes things worse, sorry, don't use it again. ... But the microwave is the really scary part of that machine... try at least to fix the microwave leakage, maybe it is in the ventilation holes, maybe at some other gap.
@synchro-dentally1965
@synchro-dentally1965 3 года назад
That's really cool! I'm only speculating but would having the microwave chamber's dimensions be proportional to the output wavelength help with the leakage?
@Skyentific
@Skyentific 3 года назад
Thank you. If you made them proportional, this can create standing wave inside microwave, and this will make the heating extremely inhomogeneous.
@BeefIngot

Are the holes in the side of the microwave case small enough to stop the microwaves wavelengths? (Im not even sure that made scientific sense but I think theres a reason microwave windows use mesh)
@DanielSMatthews

Can you add a randomised surface to the inside of the microwave to act as a diffusing reflector? I think that the problem is the modes for such simple geometry are not very complex so you get that patterning of the energy distribution.

I'm glad you're using a microwave leakage detector. I like this project! As darrin husmann wrote> Perhaps the most joyful thing I've seen today. . Microwave leakage: You should check out how microwave ovens "seal" the cooking cavity around the door (which apparently doesn't seem to actually seal the cavity). These depend on half-wave shorted stubs to simulate a cavity "seal". Here's a very brief description: www.edn.com/your-microwave-oven-needs-a-choke-flange/ . Microwave Hotspots: Many ovens include a "stirrer" to constantly move standing waves inside the cavity (standing waves are the reason hotspots exist.) The hotspots still exist, but they are never in any particular place long enough to be a problem. The stirrer is located near where the microwaves are injected into the cavity.
