In this video I make some custom leather patches using a 3d printed die. This was my first time modeling something in a cad software as well as my first time 3d printing.
*Note- This project only works with veg tanned leather because it is the easiest to emboss.

Watched this this morning and have been experimenting during the day with embossing a patch for my EDC.TWO project. Thanks for the tips!

Nice job! No need to soak leather for five minutes. Wet it for thirty seconds or so. Then let sit until original color starts to reappear. Then it's ready!

I realise three years have passed since you posted this video... but credit where credit is due. My wife has just bought an expensive travel-shoulder bag. I thought that a tag embossed with her name would be a stylish finishing touch, but I know zilch about embossing/debossing! Never fear, let's research it on the "University of RU-vid"! The first three videos were depressing rubbish, and left me rather despondent, then I found yours. Clear, well produced, nicely paced, thorough, up front about your lack of prior experience, and best of all you nailed it with a really great result! Many thanks, Liked & Subscribed. I will definitely check out your channel for more gems.

Nice work Miles, thanks for sharing! BTW, you don’t have to soak the leather in water, just use a wet sponge to sponge the water into the leather.

Great work, Miles. I love this! Question: Do you have a suggested source for the leather?

Awesome job Miles. Was Fusion 360 an easy program to use? What kind of a file did you have to save it as, to send it for the 3d printer?
@MakeWithMiles
@MakeWithMiles 3 года назад
Hey thanks for the comment! Yeah fusion is pretty easy to use, it can be very complicated at first but that was second time using it. I'm pretty sure I saved it as an STL file in fusion and then used the splicing software for the 3d printer to generate the toolpath.

Nice, btw do you know what type of filament you used? Looking to see if 3d printer is viable for making my own custom stamps. Thks
@MakeWithMiles
@MakeWithMiles 4 года назад
Thank you!! haha, I really don't know much about filament, but I'm pretty sure it was PLA
@contra81

@@MakeWithMiles good to know, ill look into it more. Reason why is i want to find out what would be most shock/compression resistant for making stamps. Usually an arbor press is used with leather stamps but a clamp like yours or even a set of C-clamps works just as well.

Ever try opening a can and using that to cut the circle of your leather out?

is this possible with fake leather?
@MakeWithMiles

I haven't tried that before, but I don't think that plastic leather would react the same in warm water.

Soaking the leather for 5 minutes is unnecessary. Simply dipping the leather into the water would have been sufficient, especially since you used a vice to press the stamp and leather together. Leather does not have to be saturated to take a good impression. I have been leather crafting for over 7 years, so I know better. I have messed up a project before by other saturating the leather before stamping.
