In this week’s video, I show you how to make a custom base plate for your router. Although you can buy standard base plates, there are a lot of cases where you want to make a custom base plate to handle guide templates or for special jigs and fittings. I use 1/4 inch melamine which serves as a durable easy-glide surface and is the perfect material for this purpose. Alternately, you can use plexiglass but it tends to be more expensive.

I was really stuck till I saw this, my brand is not supported by it's manufacturer, and not on the big auction sites... Thanks a million!

Eric I really enjoy your channel. You show that you can accomplish many builds without investing a kings ransom on the new tool that the big companies have just come out with. Great stuff.

Thanks for the video. The forstner bit was a great idea. I was using two thin pieces of wood and putting them together for the different hole sizes. Your way is much better and simpler.

Great video, I always make my bases circular so the bit is dead centered regardless of the orientation of the tool it also increases surface contact for stability on smaller jobs.

@D twist Rewind Thanks! Most router bases are circular. Because my plate is a different shape and I didn't want the overhang, a circular shape was not the right choice for me.

Thanks for sharing. 1) How do you center the Forstner bit on the drill press with such a large diameter pilot hole? 2) Does the 1-1/8" through hole give you enough material to support the bushing? (I measure more like 1-3/16" is needed)
@EricSorensenCanada

Thanks Mike! Use whatever diameter works for your guide bushing set. Mine is customized for the Shop Fox Set that I have. I should also mention that since this video, I found an adapter ring for my factory base plate. So That's another option if you shop around.

Dumb noobie question, but why did you use the fancy bit into the pilot hole before using the hole saw?

Hi Eric, can you recommend some good router bits. I have MLCS but for some reason they are getting dull after a a couple of uses. Especially my straight cutting bits. Even though i cut no more than 1/8" depth at a time. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Stick with good quality carbide bits my friend! They might cost a little more but they're well worth it. I prefer " carbide spiral upcut router bits " for most of my work these days, unless i'm doing trim work, slot cutting or cutting-in special profiles. You can search for those on Amazon and find tons of options.

I made a custom base plate for a router table and I wish I had done it the wat shown on the video it would have been more accurate and faster.

@brendan moellmann The beauty of it is you can always make new ones because they're so inexpensive to make 🙂

Nice work Eric! Question: Why does the attachment to the base plate not sit flat & in line with the rest of the surface of the plate? What kind of function does it have sticking out like that? Just curious.........or maybe I'm just missing something??
@EricSorensenCanada

Thanks Steve! These are special guide bushings for cutting mortise and tenons. You will see them in action in future videos. They are designed for a special jig that I recently purchased. I'll be trying it out over the holidays 🙂
