I would use split lock washers on all those carriage bolts as well. Just ensures that they all stay tighter as the wood shrinks.

What are your thoughts on using those screw in piles instead of the concrete blocks or even digging and pouring concrete posts.
@semchuck90

Quick question, when building a box beam, can you use different width boards? For instance could i use 2×6 around 4×4 posts as well? Looking to build a floating deck myself soon, but it won't be more than 20 inches tall and I'll be using the deck blocks as well. 2 × 12 would be too tall for my use. Thank you in advance.

I’m about to build a small, ground level deck that I was hoping to support on one side by existing concrete decking, as you have done here. Is the rim joist just laid on the ground with no fasteners or any form of attachment on that side? If it was in the video, I missed it.

A little tip is not to use Channel Locks (slip joint pliers) for tightening hardware. By using them, yes they are quick, but as the teeth scrapes against the nut it removes the galvanizing allowing for the hardware to rust. Only use a wrench, box or open, socket, or a crescent wrench.

For those of you who don't know, pay close attention to Jeff when he says YOU DO NOT ATTACH A FLOATING DECK TO A FROST-PROTECTED STRUCTURE (such as a house). Frost heave will cause big problems if you do.

I believe this is where you can now use 5/16 structural screws like the grk rss or the spax power lag instead of the 1/2 inch carriage bolts. Removing the need for drilling holes. I think you would want to use a screw long enough that you see it come through the back side of the 4x4 post.

I'm planning to make a low level deck just on top a concrete slab but I am not that familiar with dos and don'ts here in North America especially on icy weather. My querry is if it is ok to directly put wood or the joist on top of the concrete slab or it is advisable to elevate it a little, the slab has a good slope though. By the way loves all your videos.
@jimmccall2689
@jimmccall2689 7 лет назад
I like how scientific and educational you are in your discussions. Is there any worry about the 4x4 end grain sitting on the concrete deck block, as far as water sitting there and being sucked into the end grain? Any reason to wrap the end of the post in joist tape? For that matter, why not joist tape on top of the joists?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
The deck block has a drainage hole in the center. If water does get absorbed it will quickly be removed with the dry air after the storm. I try not to build anything outdoors with an expectation to last more than 40 years. I find it impossible to manage a clients expectation and so I don't go through processes that may or may not have a small effect. I know that deck is good for 40 and that's what I am selling them.

Hi there,Great videos very easy to follow so thanks for sharing.Just a question I'm in the UK and the CAMO system isn't very popular here. I've got a deck to do soon and like the hidden appeal. We use a lot of treated lumber here? Do the boards ever move or warp at all? I really want to start using but not sure about it!Keep up the great work - cheers
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
Thanks Chris. In actuality I have found that the boards curl less with the camo system. With a traditional fastener the only downward force on the board is screw head. With the camo system the entire length of the shaft is downward force. This is almost 1 1/2" since the screw is installed on a 45 degree angle. The only down side is it takes 3 times longer to screw down. But I fin d it worth the time to have a lifetime of splinter free deck.

great work but still no i.d. of what screws used(size) .. brand.. one other video I watched the guy used 3 inch and 4 inch on the railings.. and was saying the crown on the boards had to be curving up.. (I think not) but does it matter w larger boards? do you check the "crown" on the sides?

Being a disabled person and having started a deck prior to my disability, I've been dreading the thought of having to hammer in all those nails. I am so happy I learned of this product. I know I'm late to this video but recently found your channel and really enjoying the learning. I've always been reluctant to do a floating deck for fear of washout/erosion around the blocks and any leveling media used. How do you account for or avoid that problem?

you can always pour a little post cement around the base and spray with water. it sets up and makes an onsite bowl to hold everything together. Cheers! or dig down a little. Cheers!

2:40 Look how beams are attached to the posts. I am not familiar with Canadians building codes, but I am pretty sure this deck will not pass a code inspection in most (if not all) US municipalities - support beam must be placed directly on top of the posts (post could be notched), rather than bolted to the side, so the full load is transferred to the posts. Basically, the entire weight of this section of the deck itself, plus whatever furniture/grill they will have on top of it, plus weight of all the people who might be there is going to be supported by 8 bolts, which are not designed to withstand lateral forces.
@northerncoder
@northerncoder 6 лет назад
Great videos. Question, why does the top half of deck have a box built on top of your structure, while the bottom half the deck is built right onto the supports? Why not build the top half of deck right onto the support too and skip the 'box'?

I find it interesting that you use just a pile of ... whatever that is, gravel? to hold up the blocks. My old house has this kind of foundation on an outside landing/porch, and they dabbed a blob of concrete or cement down in the ground, then aligned the blocked on top. I don't know why your sand or gravel would move or get disturbed, but it seemed funny to just have everything on a pile of gravel. That doesn't settle and change over time significantly?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
It is just there to make it easier to level the block. serves no structural significance.
@roshawnsims8390
@roshawnsims8390 7 лет назад
lol now that is interesting @ barron. So you think tightening galvanized nuts would take the galvi off? I think that most recommended galvi hardware is usually 3x dipped as most people are using treated wood.I would worry about them rounding the nuts more than taking the galvi off. then again if they got the cheap type then if they see the galvi coming off the nuts or heads nothing some outdoor spray paint won't fix. Tape them and spray them black so they look sexy. Good video and watch out for rust.I wonder how long it would take for a nut or bolt to rust so it would fail? I would think way after the wood on the deck failed.

I guess if you used a really cheap pair of channel locks that couldn't take the torque it could be possible. but then I would be more concerned about my knuckles.

This summer I replaced my ranch gate lodgepole posts (2 on a side), after ten years they had rotted right at ground level from snow, ice and water during the winter in Central Oregon high desert area. This time, I did it right and tarred the posts and left a quarter size drain or weep hole at the pole bottoms with an additional tar paper over it. The 5/8" diam. 71/2" lag bolts had some rust only about 2" from the Head of the bolt. I believe they would have held for at least another ten years. This time, I greased the lag bolts when I installed them. So should last longer and remain strong enough.

Regarding the landscape cloth: for all the decks I have built and never used it, nothing substantial has grown underneath any of them. Not enough sun, air and water gets down there to create the habitat required for anything that would pose a problem for the deck's enjoyment. (My background is horticulture.)
@gsh319
@gsh319 6 лет назад
You guys are great but there's no way I could build that deck in my area. Aside from the hangers, nothing else would meet code. I don't see how that platform is going to remain level with even a small amount of vibration. The dead load alone is going to settle those prefab concrete piers.

one Question tho. You talk about nails or bolts being used but they have structural wood screws on the market that I cant see how they would not preform just as well as nails or bolts in a comparable size. I know that I used some to put 2x12 lumber to 4x8 posts and have been standing on them and they are not moving but then again this is not a deck and there are 2 per section and the posts are 6 ft apart. I did use them on some wood stairs also and the stairs are also solid.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
The structural screws are to be used when attaching joist hangers only. This eliminates the need to use a hammer in close quarters of your fingers. The bolts are used to attach box beams to 4x4 posts

Surprised your city would allow you to use a floating deck for that application, in my municipality you can't use floating if the height exceeds 24" but then again we don't have to use the footers at the bottom of the post holes.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
It all depends on the city and the inspector on site. Sometimes you need to haggle a bit to get to an agreement. Most city officials are open to ideas and when you can't agree get an engineer. The city has rules so they don't need to be engineers. There are a million ways to build. You just need to find out what your jurisdiction wants and deliver a product that will pass inspection.
@mini_worx
@mini_worx 6 лет назад
Although codes differ from one county/city to another, the one thing that baffles me is the piers passing inspection, as you have them. The gravel underneath will "wash" away from rain and movement. So all in all, those piers will all settle about an inch lower than when set. I'm surprised the city would allow that as oppose to digging down 1'+ to set them into a "pocket".
