Your channel is brilliant, my grandson (7) and I watch it all the time, and we do some of them. My only (minor) complaint is that I wish you showed the circuit diagram, even if briefly (as ElectroBOOM does), so we can more easily copy it.

Another question, when you have a moment: It's about frequency of the power supply vs recovery time of the diodes. Everywhere I look, the 2cl2j diodes are insanely expensive... but I have many different alternatives rated at up to 20kv. I was assuming that the 2CL2J diodes had a fast recovery time, but when I looked at the data sheet it isn't even quoted. What I have collected with limited funds: R5000 rated at 5kV and 2MHz recovery frequency. PRHVP2A-20 - rated at 20kV, unknown recovery time CL04-12 (MO diodes) rated at 12kv, 450mA - unknown recovery time I want to avoid wasting time and solder using components that will not work together. Do you think any of these rectifiers will be up to the task of an arc lighter, or should I make an inverter based on a 555-driven circuit limited to 2Mhz?
@wyqid
@wyqid 4 месяца назад
You can get high voltage diodes for free from old microwave ovens. They are usually rated at 12Kv. Post an ad online that you are looking to recycle old microwave ovens and include free pick-up. You'll get diodes, 2Kv capacitors, 2000v transformers, turn table motors, blower fan motors or fans with spools of magnet wire, large ring magnets from the magnetrons, lots of switches, wire, and sometimes simple LCDs and small LED strips. Offer to pick up TVs and other electronics for recycling and you'll have a boatload of parts. I did it for a year and now have thousands of free high voltage components.

Also why in the video I mentioned to only draw sparks with the grounded wire.

@jacklewis1
@jacklewis1 5 лет назад
No it outputs DC and the voltage multiplier needs an ac input.
@theplasmaprince8651
@theplasmaprince8651 3 года назад
@@jacklewis1 I guess you could technically remove the multiplier circuitry in the flyswatter, then it would just be AC. Just a bit of desoldering (now I'm curious what a dual flyswatter arc would look like without the HV cap and multiplier circuitry).
@ABaumstumpf
@ABaumstumpf 6 лет назад
Where did you get the figure of x2.8 from? A voltage multiplier adds 1x the input-voltage at ever stage. The lighter seems to give a higher output than you stated too.
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 6 лет назад
So, Multipliers do not add 1x per layer. A 5000 volt source, is 5000 volts RMS. Peak voltage of any AC is 1.414 times the listed RMS. Then, when a multiplier discharges, it has two capacitors for each stage. That’s 2.828 times the input.
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 6 лет назад
Great question by the way 👍
@ABaumstumpf
@ABaumstumpf 6 лет назад
that still only adds exactly 1x the input per stage - and if you have a way to measure the output (use some resistive dividers) you would note that this is exactly what is happening - at stage N you get 'N' x 'Input voltage' As output. It doesn't matter if you measure RMS or Peak voltage as long as you stay consistent. There is ample literature on voltage multipliers and i kinda suspect that the millions of people that have built them and the thousands that use them in professional environments on a daily basis know what they are doing.
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 6 лет назад
There are 2 charged capacitors in a stage, each charged to 1.414 input RMS. How again are two of those in series (2.8) equal to only 1X input? It has 16 capacitors total, all charged to peak RMS. Equation is 2NVmax, or, (2* number of stages * 1.414RMS voltage)......... As per literature: 1)"The total output voltage will be 2nVmax where n is the number of stages" - www.academicjournals.org/article/article1379584824_Dwived%20and%20Daigvane.pdf 2)"Therefore, the maximum value of output voltage is 2nVmax in which n is the number of multiplier stages" www.hindawi.com/journals/jece/2017/4805268/ 3)"2nVpeak = Vout + Vdrop" www.irjet.net/archives/V3/i2/IRJET-V3I2114.pdf SECTION 3.1 The difference in design is the difference in equation. Some are built with capacitors diagonally from each other, with one capacitor per given length. In that case, my device has 16 stages. So 1.414(3kv)*16. 67,000. Or, multipliers can be rearranged visually into two capacitors per visual stage, with them both in line with one another, like mine. In that case, I have 8 stages, or 2(1.414)(3kv) * 8. 67,000. There is indeed ample literature, which, i've been reading for 12 years now.

the current has nothing to do with it, the only factor that's dangerous is the voltage. the current is the voltage divided by the resistance :/ also those sparks can only deliver probably about 500uA (probably) so, not enough to harm you. but 60kV wouldn't be nice to touch :/

I have built one of these lightning towers and powered it from an arc lighter DIY module which outputs 3-5 kV from 3-5 VDC input. The DIY module seems to be able to accept up to about 12 VDC for an even higher output to feed to the tower. I won't go much higher because the secondary windings of the small transformer might not be able to take much higher potential across them. Now, I'm planning to build a second one of these lightning towers. If you draw out the schematic to the lightning tower you will notice that you can mount the diodes in one of two ways. My first tower has the diode polarity such that it conducts negative voltage up the diode ladder resulting in a large negative DC voltage at the top load. I plan to build my second one with the diodes mounted in the opposite direction up the ladder to create a large positive DC voltage at the top load. Then if I common the ground points of the two towers I should end up with -60 kV at the top of one tower and +60 kV at the top of the other for a net potential difference of 120 kV between the two top loads. It should be possible to generate some pretty good sparks between the two top loads of the two towers. Not quite the 400 kV of the giant tower in the other Plasma Channel video but pretty good. Oh, by the way, I dripped some paraffin wax on the solder joints on the back of my first lightning tower to reduce corona losses from those. It's hard to eliminate all sharp points from the leads of the components. The paraffin insulates those and helps reduce losses. I considered using hot melt glue, it's easier and cleaner to apply, but I wasn't sure about the high voltage properties of it. Also if I ever had to replace a diode or capacitor I'd have to burn through that hot melt glue and it would be messy. I can scrape most of the wax away first if I ever need to make a component change.
@davidh.4649
@davidh.4649 5 лет назад
Last post on this. I finished my second "positive" tower and have now played them between each other. Man it starts to get scary. The sparks that jump between the top loads of the two towers are between 5 and 6 inches long and quite loud and "angry". I added a green banana jack at the bottom that connects to the ground point of the capacitor/diode ladder so I can plug and unplug the discharge wire easily and interchange it for the commoning wire for both towers running in tandem. I put a banana plug onto a piece of silicone insulated high voltage wire to plug into this jack for the discharge wire. Just nice to be able to plug/unplug that wire rather than capturing it under the terminal behind the acrylic plastic. Great well thought out design for this lightning tower!

I showed a few pictures at 1:30 mark in my mini lab tour video I released yesterday. It was amazing, the diodes and capacitors I had to use were over $200 each. I found a retired engineer from Fermilab to make the corona rings for me. I designed everything myself, including the drive circuit and a large potted transformer for the start of the stack.

Another awesome Vid. Thanks Jay! You’re the Don man. I was You was my science teacher when I was at school, I’d have learned so much more. Jay, question.... could you also use a similar system of diodes and capacitors to up a very low voltage (about 500-750mw) to something useable?
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 5 лет назад
Thank you so much! You would have problems at low voltages. Because diodes all have what is called a voltage drop across them. For each one of the diodes I used in this project, you lose 23 volts. That means there are 16 diodes in my tower, so 16*23v is lost in the output. IF you start with less than a volt, it would be difficult to increase voltages. Some diodes may be able to do it though, just not the ones I used!

@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 4 года назад
Hi, there is no positive supply from the lighter. The lighter is AC. It goes in at the base and connects to both sides of the ladder. The copper tube up top connects to the final stage, the end, of the multiplier. Thank you for the compliments. Remember, only allow the device to discharge to its OWN electrical ground.

Hi Jay, Again, a bit late to the party, Only one suggestion..... Ok, 2. 1 a circuit digram for those that don't know what multiplier you are using, and 2 where the circuits ground should be, I did not see you show it. Other than that a perfect delivery, Thank you for your hard work in making these videos.
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 3 года назад
Certainly. The circuit diagram is the same for every voltage multiplier. You may search voltage multiplier schematic on google, and you can choose which way your diodes face, to determine (+) or (-) output. The ground is one of the input wires.

If you were to combine 16 mini teslas, would that increase the size of the spark gap. The spark gap of lightning seems limitless but obviously from the clouds to the ground.

I used to work in a TV shop. A flyback transformer does the same thing and produces 30kv to charge a picture tube on an older tv but only milliamps of current so it's not lethal. If you accidently get popped by a picture tube discharging I guess its like being hit by the difibulator in the ER
