Thanks again Connor. I know your F-type is long gone but I keep finding myself coming back to your videos. Not many went the extra mile like you. Mucccchhhhhhh appreciated.
Great video bro, I definitely appreciate all your how to videos especially on how detailed you are with them as I am a firm believer that the quality is in the details. Keep up the great work I’m sure all of us F-Type owners appreciate it. 👍🏼
I know you sold your F Type R but man you are the go to for all my maintenance stuff. These videos are excellent and your style of explanation is very easy to understand. You don’t skip steps. So thank you for doing these!!!
Did this job this week. The video was really helpful. However, I discovered that it's not really necessary to remove the wheel. If you just raise the car enough to climb under the rear, you can reach over the suspension components well enough to reach the filler hole with a ratchet extension and long ball end hex socket. Also easy to reach the opening with the hose from your pump. The wheel can stay on, which saves some time and effort. Pretty easy job, overall. The hardest part is getting the right amount of oil back into the diff. I found that the pump wasn't able to get all of the oil out of the bottle. I poured the rest into another container with some more diff oil and then used a syringe-style pump to top off to the correct amount.
@@skrrtgarage3922 - about to hit 30k miles and will be doing this. Using your break pad video in the meantime for changing the rear ones only. Somehow those are are a 3 and the front ones are at a 6. Thanks again !
Thanks for the walk through - great video as always. Just put the deposit down on my 2015 F-Type R (should have it delivered within the week) and am ordering the fluids right now as my first order of business will be to swap the diff fluid!
Thanks for posting the DIY videos! Going to check with my son-in-law to see if he has the jacks & ramps. Got 35600 mi on my F-Type S AWD & don’t want any differential problems! Hey, enjoy your new Lexus!
Mobil 1 diff gear oil costs $9/quart. Its a good idea to run some through, or do a change and drive around the block, then change again, to clean the old oil out before filling with the expensive stuff. Also, no need to remove the wheel.
Just subscribed. Thank you for your how to videos. Just picked up a 15 Coupe S. Not many diy videos on here on the platform so I greatly appreciate these.
Yea I have a few more already filmed, I’m trying to decide on which videos to get out first. As far as the transmission, I probably won’t mess with that until closer to 45-50miles
My 2017 F-Type S has 36k miles on it. I just finished changing the differential oil. The used oil was very black and and more viscous than the new oil. There's no doubt that it should have been changed long ago. I'll change it every 15k miles from now on. There were no visible metal shavings on the drain plug magnet, just a chunk of metal powder about the size of a nickel. I did take the left wheel off in an attempt to get to the fill plug. I absolutely couldn't see it. When I got up under the car, it was pretty easy to see. I guess I should have tried that first. On my car there was no way to get to the fill plug through the wheel well. However, it was easy to get to from the bottom. The location of the fill plug seemed to be lower and further toward the front of the car versus the diagram shown in this video. I filled it using the Ravenol MDL. Jaguar's instruction to not use the fill hole as a leveling point is just plain stupid. They could have easily put the location lower. I estimate that I put in about 1.4L in, but I don't really know. I used some to clean my pump before filling and some spilled out after filling. I did put new thread sealant on the plugs and tightened them per the torque recommendation in this video. It seems to be working fine now. I'll let you know if anything goes wrong.
Yea the f type s has a different full hole from the R. I recently changed the diff fluid on an S. The manual states the f type needs .83 liter of oil. How were you able to fit 1.4? Thanks for the comment.
@@skrrtgarage3922 It's probably less than 1.4L, but it was definitely more than .83L. I have a bit less than .6L left from the two liters. I probably used up .3L when I ran some through my pump to clean it. A decent amount spilled out when I leveled the car. It's just hard to say. Perhaps I ended up getting only about 1L in there. That's why having a fill hole in the correct location is critical to eliminate guesswork. Where'd you find the specification for .83L?
Just as a helpful note, you can just fill the until through the fill plug until it starts to dribble out. It's easier than the fill to volume method and absolutely fine for the unit. Also, the dark oil and powdery sediment on the drain magnet is normal. This is just the micro phophate gear coating wearing off during initial bedding in. You won't usually see it on a second oil change if you were to do one 👍
Thank you for the video! Will do this diff oil change soon on my 5.0l 2011 XK, which was kind of the less sporty predecessor model line of the F-Type. Should be very similar… I will use 0.9 litres of Motul 300 Gear oil as per Motul’s oil spec recommendation for my XK’s open diff (XKR have the eDiff).
Let’s see how long your OEM cats last with the tune and pulley! Congrats on the new VAP Stage 2 kit! Hopefully your OEM supercharger crank pulley bolts aren’t red loctite into the crank pulley! :)
Im a new F Type S owner (2017) and hear from the tranny pros that due to the the sealed transmission the fluid need 'not' and cannot easily be changed? please comment
Ravenol MDL specifically indicates that it meets the BOT 720 specification. You can get it from blauparts.com for less than half the price of the Castrol BOT 720.
I used redline in mines. Redline told me to run a 75w140 instead of the 75w90 for better protection and cooling. And i have for over a year now with no issues. My diff failed using the OEM fluid.
@@skrrtgarage3922 I got jack stands on the brain because I had some from Harbor Freight that were recalled. I will tackle my differential fluid at some point, I've been inspired! Only 23K miles on my 2016 V6S, but will tackle soon.
Thx for the videos and keep them coming. I have a 2016 F-Type S and your videos will be very useful when I start doing my own maintenance after 2021 when the included maintenance ends. What are your thoughts on the transmission fluid change interval?
I appreciate the comment! I don’t think the transmission is as vulnerable as the differentials in these cars, so you can probably safely stick to the manufacturer recommended schedule. If you drive really hard, maybe change around ~40k miles
I just changed the differential fluid for the first time on my 2017 F-Type S at 36k miles. It wasn't chunky, but the oil was solid black and more viscous than the new fluid. If I had it to do over again, I would change it every 15k miles. I can't speak for the manual transmission fluid as I have not done it yet.
We don't have an XK but do have an X100 and an X150 and these don't even have a drain plug so the X152 is a major improvement from Jaguar. It's a good video but just one question: why did you bother to lift the front wheels? 🤔
Thanks for the comment! I raised the front also to that the drain and fill would be more precise. If I only raised the back then not all of the fluid would drain.
@@skrrtgarage3922 Ah, I see. Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't have bothered about the slight difference that it might make to the drain volume but I understand your reasoning.
Hi I have enjoyed your videos You did not mention the condition of your diff fluid after 36K miles I think you mentioned. Was the fluid in need of change ?? Interesting that Jaguar does not require any fluid change on the diffs and transfer case in the case of AWD
Yea I should have provided a photo of the fluid, it would obviously very black and I had quite a bit of sludge built up on my magnetic drain plug. This service wasn’t required on my car yet either, but it was definitely time for it! This is more of a preventative maintenance item more than anything.
I think it could theoretically happen to anyone under any condition. I believe it’s really uncommon and it would obviously be covered under a warranty if you bought a car with one.
I just did this. Not filling it until it runs out freaks me out. I'm worried that I underfilled it. It seems to work fine, but it is very difficult to get the fill tube in the diff properly. How much do you think would make a difference? Im definitely over 1l, but maybe 1.1.
I 100% know what you mean, it’s kinda bizarre not filling it up all the way. You’re most likely fine, depending on how it drained, some might still be in there. Did you use that chart I had in the video? My car called for 1.24 or something like that
Okay - so the refill plug was an absolute B to get back in. I found that if you are on a lift you can actually press the plug up against the treads with enough pressure to get it started using two fingers. if you try to do it with the long extensions it's damn near impossible to get it to bite. make sure you clean the threads of the refill plug too.
