I have been a locksmith for almost 35 years. You may want to consider this (if you ever make another similar project). In a project like this, there are two units of mass (the latch, and the hardware that operates the latch). If you design "lazy motion" into the connection between the two, and keep them independent, you don't have to use the action of the door (against the latch) to overcome the mass of the hardware. By designing a gap between them, you can use the proper spring tension for the latch, and the proper spring tension for the hardware. This is often must be employed if the operating hardware is in the form of a rotating mass (like a lever). In the case of a lever, a big-ol honking spring is required to hold the levers up, but a delicate (few pounds of) force on the latch spring is required. Without taking this into consideration, slamming the door is a virtual guarantee. Feel free to contact me, if you ever embark upon such a project again...

I've learned or, more accurately, relearned to draw things out before starting the job. My HS shop teacher wouldn't let us start a project without plans in hand. I got away from that and just built out of my head. This almost always led to some bit of rework. Nowadays, I use Onshape for just about anything more complex than a box. It may seem a little tedious to sit and draw up plans rather than make sparks or wood dust but the projects seem to get done better. I guess it also helps that I like 3d modeling.

I draw up plans for my bigger projects for sure. I wasn't sure what direction I was going on this at first except I know I needed it to be spring loaded. I agree though, working off plans saves time later. I need to get better about that

Great Video Doug, Question , does it matter on your Screws to make them look Rusty , before doing your Door plate , or After ????? Thanks Barry and Marlene
@ArtfullyRogue
@ArtfullyRogue 3 года назад
I usually rust a whole box of screws at one time. So I had these rusted prior since I use them on my water features
