In this video I show you how I fixed some terrible rust on my rocker panel on my 1998 Dodge Ram 24v Cummins diesel. I wanted to try the spray foam/body filler repair that I've been seeing so much of lately. I couldn't believe the results! Its not perfect, but it was a lot less work then trying to patch in a new rocker, and it also saved me a very expensive trip to the body shop.
This is a $2500 pickup, so I figured that it would be perfect for this experiment. The pickup in this video received a full paint job which turned out really good, so watch for that video in the near future!
I will keep you guys updated on how this fix will last, I am very curious myself. If I get a couple years out of it I will be very content.

Interesting idea. I once repaired brick work on a house with spray foam. problem area was over the twin garage doors. Imagine archway bricks, but no arch, curved on sides but flat across the top of the garage door. I jacked up the wood work, see the brick siding was coming down and a 1/4 to 1/2 inch gap had opened. So several cans of foam and it glued all that stuff together and the bricks stayed up. Then the thin center door divider post with the brick on front.. FIL had whacked with his car, broken that area. Replaced broken bricks, glued together leaving the old mortar with PL premium poly construction adhesive and filled the void behind with expanding foam. Very solid. Then mortared bricks were needed. Stronger than new.

I watched some of your cover videos; Love the maiden Trooper one the best. However I was a body man for many years, removed lots of other peoples fixes, seen window screen with bondo, holes stuffed with rags, all kinds of things. I don't know how your job is holding up so far, but there is a better filler you can buy we used to call it kitty whiskers, it's basically body filler with fiberglass reinforcing I think it would be best for your first application. I want to see your AFC live in action thanks for the videos.

I get you were just seeing what you could do. Not bad but it will come right back out. You definitely need to use a closed cell foam. Also they make fiberglass bondo. It’s called duraglass and it holds up a lot better. Regular body filler like you used is like a spong. As soon as it gets wet it swells up. When you do any type of repair like this you want to try and seal the back side of it off. Use undercoating to do that. The longer you can keep water from getting to the repaired area the longer it will last. Good job for a first attempt.

How did it hold up?

it will likely hold up, these metal parts are not moving a lot like to tear it off the metal. And it has some give. Not sure if it is closed cell foam. If it is not, then if a break occurs in the foam, it will be a giant sponge and soak up a lot of water.

You did a great job, but I'm afraid it will not last. One season in the salt and the rust will be through from the inside.....There is really no way to treat this than cutting out the rusted metal, weld in new, treat both the inside and outside to prevent rust, then paint. Overall, it looks really. good.

It's as yet an unexplained phenomenon but as you can see that spray foam (or "pumpypoof" in Britain) also automatically converts any Dodge vehicle to right-hand-drive.
