SSTC's can be just too darn complicated for a lot of people, but no more! Your worries are over, because this collaborative video between, Plasma Channel, LabCoatz and I will teach you how to build likely the world's simplest SSTC's!
ATTENTION YT STAFF! I WAS BEING SUPERVISED BY A PARENT DURING THESE EXPERIMENTS!
here is the LabCoatz part of this collab: • World's Simplest Solid...
A big thanks to LabCoatz for collaborating with me and teaching me how to build an SSTC so that I could participate in this collaboration! LabCoatz is a growing mad science/engineering channel like mine who has just passed 200 subscribers. Well come on everyone let's get him to 300! Subscribe to his channel and click the bell if you haven't already. Channel link: / labcoatz_science
One huge thanks to Jay from Plasma Channel for making time for this collaboration, he has been my favorite RU-vidr for quite a while now so you can only imagine how excited I am that he decided to help Zach and I out on this collaborative video. if you haven't already, subscribe to his channel and click the bell. Excellent video collaboration! However I do not recommend using light bulbs as a ballast for constant use, this is basically a high voltage input slayer exciter. Using an inductive ballast will allow the coil to actually resonate within the sine wave due to the use of a very capacitance cap (which is a must!). That's why you're getting more constant arcs out it. Try it and see what how it works for you.
@theplasmaprince8651
@theplasmaprince8651 3 года назад
Thank you very much! This one actually blew up when I plugged an inductive ballast into it, but it was my fault for turning the pot all the way up haha. Currently working on a better one with a half bridge of IGBTs, which will be another future collab video!

Use thicker wire for primary connection!!!! And why zener in the drain it should be on the gate to clamp the voltage to protect the gate. Nice video though! Hope you reach 100subs!

@@theplasmaprince8651 I'm surprised that it still worked. The zeners are probably shorted so it can carry current. Gate of mosfet wont last for long

plus you should have used a FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER instead to have higher efficiency
@theplasmaprince8651
@theplasmaprince8651 3 года назад
Haha ElectroBOOM reference. As much as I would have liked to have an excuse to say FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER in this video, this circuit overall works better with a puny single diode rectifier haha.

But what about protecting the transistor's drain from inductive spiking from the primary?

Confusing. At the beginning, in LabCoatz example schematic, the waveform clipper (2 Zeners with cathodes facing each other) is between the Gate and the Source. In the whiteboard example, ithe waveform clipper is between the Source and Ground, which looks completely wrong. Methinks those zeners (and lack of protection on the Mosfet gate) are going to release the magic smoke very soon.
@theplasmaprince8651
@theplasmaprince8651 3 года назад
They already did haha. In fact the whole circuit did. You will be able to see that happen in my upcoming video tomorrow! Also, LabCoatz added a 1-2K resistor between gate and source, our zener placements were the same (At least I think...).

@tonysfun 3 года назад
Where is your follow-up video? Also, why don't you specify few details -like what is the AC input voltage, mains 120V?-, so people who like to recreate your project can safely do? Are the 2 Zener diodes on Source correct? Was this exact schema used and what was the result? Did it work?
@theplasmaprince8651
@theplasmaprince8651 3 года назад
The follow up is taking longer than expected but it is being shot. The input voltage is actually 120v half wave DC, which is essentially American mains going through a single 10A10 diode. You can use the two zeners on the source or just one 12v TVS diode. And yes, I used the exact schematic shown, and it did work. I had a 300W ballast on it though, other than that the schematic is exactly the same as the circuit built in this video. I reccomend watching Labcoatz's video, as he goes into more depth than I do in this video.
@tonysfun
@tonysfun 3 года назад
@@theplasmaprince8651 Thanks for your answer. Can you explain how you connected the 300W ballast in this case? What does the ballast do in this case? (I'm sorry but I never seen any ballast used in Tesla Coil experiments).

Well I'm glad I didn't fire it up before I read the comments here . it would have been nice to know from the video that it did not work without making changes . what is used for the ballast?
@theplasmaprince8651
@theplasmaprince8651 2 года назад
I used a 300W light bulb. Start with low wattage ballasts, and slowly go to a higher power ballast. Labcoatz went as high as a 1000W ballast, but he blew up a LOT of MOSFETs making this circuit so be careful!

hello I can only do 1cm plasma at 150W what do I have to do to get more plasma? I have 450 secondary windings of 0.4 mm and primer 5 turns 2.1mm. That's how I get the best results.

I'm still fairly new to Solid State Tesla Coils, but my next video will cover this topic. Basically, you'll want to drive an IGBT half bridge with an 18v square wave signal. Course you'll need a gate drive transformer with two secondary coils of the same size in order to isolate the IGBT's from each other. You'll have about 8 turns on the primary coil of the GDT, and 12 turns on the secondary coils of the GDT. Each secondary driving an IGBT. That is, assuming you have a 12 volt signal going into the primary coil of the GDT. Not quite sure how to determine which core you'll need, but I'm using a 77. Hope I answered your question, if not keep an eye out for my next video.
